Dream Team Medical Room: Round 16

A few key injuries headline this week’s injury report alongside further omission due to suspension. With more players out then in again this week looks like it will be MBR 16. Lance Franklin and Beau Waters lead the big injuries of this round. Read on to see what else Jakub has for us.

A few key injuries headline this week’s injury report alongside further omission due to suspension. With more players out then in again this week looks like it will be MBR 16. Lance Franklin is set to miss at least two weeks after scans revealed a small tear in his hamstring. Makes you wonder if lining up against GWS on the weekend was really a good idea? After being a late withdrawal Beau Waters has had surgery on his knee and is set to miss 3-5 weeks. Essentially only a clean out, Waters has had a portion of his medial meniscus removed and faces a standard recovery period. Unlike major reconstructive surgery a meniscectomy only requires minor healing and return to sport is most often prompt and trouble free. Simon Black is in doubt after his troublesome knee also saw him as last minute withdrawal. Black is unlikely to have surgery however as he has been conservatively managing his knee for some time. Still on the knee and Carlton’s Shaun Hampson will miss the remainder of the year after rupturing his ACL. Richmond’s Nathan Foley will also not take part in the remainder of season 2012 after rupturing his Achilles during a running drill at training. Foley has not played since round 10 with a heal complaint which would almost surely be related to his Achilles injury.

Collingwood fans will be keeping a close eye on the progress of Dale Thomas after he was seen wearing a moon boot Monday morning. Common practice only uses moon boots for the stabilization of fractures or grossly unstable ankles, so it will be interesting to see what eventuates here. Surely this week we will see Scott Pendlebury back up and running. After teetering on the edge for the past few weeks, it has been a far cry from the one week time period initially given. On that topic of poor time-frames,  Essendon have declared that David Zaharakis is at least another 4 weeks away after already missing 4 with a quad injury. If you’ve got the trades then cut him loose as his score on return will be affected. Still on Collingwood and rookie Marley Williams will be having surgery on his injured shoulder,  so don’t expect to see him named in the near future. Gold Coast Joel Wilkinson is having scans on his injured ankle and is most probably looking at multiple weeks dependent on the result. Luke Hodge has had another setback with his troublesome knee swelling up and limiting his training this week. Hawthorn are adamant that Hodge will be back for the business end of the season so he can’t be too far away. Steve Johnson should be back this week following some “Hamstring tightness” as should Luke Parker after 7 weeks out with a fractured collarbone. Young gun David Swallow is also a chance to return after his 7 week layoff with a PCL injury.

To the upper body now and Kurt Tippet suffered his second concussion in the space of three weeks in Adelaide’s win against port Adelaide. As successive concussions are bad news it is unlikely that he will be named to play this weekend. Team mate Shaun Mckernan sustained a broken Jaw as is set to miss, as is Carlton’s Kade Simpson  (also broken jaw). Simpson is looking at 3-4 weeks out and Mckernan is still TBA. Jaw fractures can vary from anything between 2 to 6-8 weeks plus so let’s hope their on the ball with this one.

And finally to the suspensions, with the likes of Walker, Goddard, Martin (club imposed), Crameri, Guerra and Jackson already out this week. Jimmy Bartel has accepted two weeks,  Sharrod Wellingham is out for three, Quinten Lynch is out for one week and Luke Shuey will miss two.  With this many players out this week it will take either a lot of luck or some crafty trading to stay ahead of the pack and avoid the dreaded donut.

And that rounds it up. The injury list below is from afl.com.au and the Herald Sun. Some timeframes may differ slightly to official individual club releases and people with inside knowledge. So do some research before pulling the trigger?
