Dream Team Medical Room: Round 13

So we have come to the final bye round and hasn’t it been a nightmare. With the added pressures of extra players out, all plans have gone out of the window and coaches have been copping a lot more donuts then planned. This week it is the return of player that will have coaches looking ahead with hope.

So we have come to the final bye round and hasn’t it been a nightmare. With the added pressures of extra players out, all plans have gone out of the window and coaches have been copping a lot more donuts then planned. This week it is the return of player that will have coaches looking ahead with hope. Heath Shaw is set to return from his three week stint on the sidelines following a re-occurrence of this calf injury that had also seen him miss games earlier this year. Let’s hope that this time around he has done all the right rehab as you expect more than 17 games a year from one of you top price defenders. Reid is also a chance to play against West Coast on the weekend, however unfortunately one Scott Pendlebury is not expected to line-up as he is still listed as two weeks and has missed some training in the past week. Adam Goodes is a likely inclusion this week for Sydney following a quadriceps strain and Jordan Lewis (suspension) will be back after the bye opening up some nice POD’s in the forward department. Ryan Hargrave should have recovered from his general soreness/rest ready for this weekend and Beau Waters is also back and with good timing. With many of the top defenders having round 12 byes it will be all hands on deck this week if you are to avoid a defensive hiding.

David Hille is pushing for a start at Essendon this weekend and may be a wild card option for the ever growing “ruck department dramas”. With Sandliands out long-term the week before last, those coaches with Jonathan Giles would not have hesitated in playing the GWS big man as a main ruck. With a solid year to date Giles has been one of the more consistent rucks and just as we really needed him, he has gone and injured his calf. Listed as TBA I am thinking that the omission was precautionary as even just playing with a “tight” calf dramatically increases you likely hood of more significant soft tissue injury. If he does miss this week then I would expect him to be back soon after so hold back on the trading at this point. Interestingly the ruck curse has now also affected the player psychologically with Bulldogs Will Minson out for this week for sledging against ports Danyle Pearce.

Port Adelaide are making a late play for the most injured team this year with three of their players looking at lengthy stints on the sidelines following this week’s games. The round 12 bye will help but with Trengove having surgery on his finger, Hartlett tearing a hamstring and Schulz in hospital with internal bleeding following a sickening collision with a team mate. It will be at least 4 weeks before port’s stock start to rise. Gold Coast injury list has too grown yet again with promising young defender Seb Tape out for the rest of the year and looking down the barrel of a knee reconstruction after rupturing his anterior curciate  ligament (ACL). No. 1 draft pick David Swallow is recovering from a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury in his knee, but is set on missing at least another month after a slower than expected recovery period. Unlike the ACL which is essential for knee stability, hence the regular reconstructive surgeries. A player can go without a PCL if ruptured (surgeons will however reconstruct in younger individuals) or if injured can undergo an extensive 8-12 week rehabilitation period and can be good as new. Jarrod Harbrow is also on the cusp of a return following an elbow fracture that has seen him sidelined for 10 weeks.

And that rounds it up. The injury list below is from afl.com and the Herald Sun. Some timeframes may differ slightly to official individual club releases and people with inside knowledge. So do some research before pulling the trigger?
