Dream Team Medical Room: Round 12

Jakub, our physio man from the west, is back with a look at the DT relevant injuries that we are faced with ahead of Round 12. Aaron Sandilands big toe is the big story of the week, what should you be doing with him? Will the turf toe keep him out for long? See what Jakub has to say!

Another week and another set of injuries, and none of them is bigger or more serious than Aaron Sandilands big toe! I’m sure you will all join me in saying that this year the ruck situation has been an absolute shambles. Coming into the year all that DT coaches needed to decide was whether to go with two premium ruckmen or just the one with three rookies. What could go wrong? One by one the big men have fallen, all taken by the great ruck curse of 2012! Now everyone had just started breathing a collective sigh of relief: with Redden and Big O getting named and with the rise of the new mulleted golden boy in one Ivan Maric, things were finally looking up in the ruck department. And then the curse strikes again.

From an outsider’s POV Sandilands was a big risk from the get go. Turf toe aka 1st metatarsophalangeal joint sprain has a nasty habit or reoccurring and even turning chronic and with Sandilands looking at preserving the rest of his career it’s a 10 week rest on the sidelines. Maric is the first name that should spring to mind to replace Big S, however do not overlook the old fox Dean Cox as he has had his bye and will save you a donut if picked up this week. If you’re looking at more POD then you can’t go past Sandilands sidekick Griffin. With Sandilands out last year he played some top-shelf DT football and with another year under his belt the former Adelaide kid is ready to step up. Again on the curse: Carlton’s ever growing injury list continues with the addition of Robert Warnock who sustained a hip injury on the weekend. Hips can be very tricky and with a bye one week away does Carlton have the luxury of being cautious? On a positive note just as predicted Scotland is back early from his mysterious calf injury as is his partner in crime Andrew Carrazzo. Maybe Carlton’s cloud is starting to develop a silver lining?

Zaharakis is the next DT relevant player to go down this (or should I say last?) week. Making a tough time even harder a training ground injury will see Zaha out for anywhere from 4-6 week. Zaharakis has done his quad participating in a kicking drill and club doctors have said he will miss at least four games. Does this factor in the bye? We don’t know but with the quads being the primary source of power for kicking and sprinting and with a re-injury or full tear meaning likely surgery and 12+ weeks out. With this in mind I don’t expect to see Zaharakis back too soon. Think an Adam Goodes like timeframe. Speaking of whom, Goodsey will be back very soon and is a contender for Zaharakis spot if you have the patience. Otherwise look towards Collingwood and Geelong if you need any ideas. Didaks poor run of injuries continues as he has fully torn one of his adductor muscles. Reports say he is lucky and will avoid injury, but a grade 3 muscle tear is 8-10 weeks plus+. Still on Collingwood expect to see Shaw back after the bye but again unfortunately I think Pendlebury will be warming our benches for a few more games (expected return round 14/15)

Jroos ankle had him looking in all kinds or trouble, however ankles often look worse than they are (think of JK...oh wait). The only cause for concern is that Richmond play GWS and it would make since to rest your key forward and not risk long term injury going into a nothing game. In saying so I think all of Richmonds remaining games are considered must wins, so we will have to wait and see if Jroo gets up. Finally Campbell Brown took a knock to the leg but his cork should not affect his foreseeable playing future.

And that rounds it up. The injury list below is from afl.com and the Herald Sun. Some timeframes may differ slightly to official individual club releases and people with inside knowledge. So do some research before pulling the trigger.
