What if those Cash Cows kept this up….

Now I know what you are going to say, it is only round one and none of these cows have even started to fatten up! I agree, it is early, but it is never too early to start planning for what you want to do with your cows and what sort of prices they can achieve if they keep their Rd1 form up.

Now I know what you are going to say, it is only round one and none of these cows have even started to fatten up!  I agree, it is early, but it is never too early to start planning for what you want to do with your cows and what sort of prices they can achieve if they keep their Rd1 form up.

As I discussed in my last article, you should try and go into a season with a plan of who you want in your team for the GF in round 24.  There are many sources of info around as to what prices will do, we can use data analysis from the Assistant Coach’s Analyser (get your free trial now) or Grimlock’s FFGenie (which is a fantastic tool) and then there are the geeks amongst us who have developed their own massive spreadsheets (as I raise my hand in that category) to help them find out what will happen in the future.  But one thing is for certain, you need to have your wits about you as to when someone is on the bubble and is going to have a big price swing.  Usually that is in Rd 3, but with the byes this year Gold Coast, Adelaide and North Melbourne players won’t have that price rise until round 4 so make sure you consider this as you can downgrade one of your other cash cows to the guys from those teams if you really need some early quick cash to fix a selection error.

So I thought I would take a quick look at some of the players from the weekend who was punching above their weight. I know that most of these are sort of given, but I have had a look at what the effect on their prices would be if they continued with their current scoring.  I know that this isn’t always the case (thanks for the memories Beau Muston) but it is fun to dream… But if these guys do keep this up when do they become a keeper?Who knows, I know of some guys who traded out Michael Barlow before he got to his top price.  This will be a tough call for some coaches, but if they score at an elite level each week they will identify themselves fairly quickly.

In round 1 Ed Curnow was the man!  At this scoring level his price would rise to $401,589.  This would take a few weeks to get. But will he be able to maintain the score of 107 each week?  I don’t know enough about his security to comment on this guy at the moment.

Shaun McKernan would rise up to $311,513 if he keeps up his 83.  This is one that I can see happening, I went along to see the Hawks and Crows on Sat night and this boy did not look out of place at all.  With the injuries at the Crows in Tippett and now Porplysia I think that he will cement himself up forward and scores over 60 each week would not be out of the question.

The man everyone has Andrew Krakouer would be priced at$360,304 with a score of 96 each week.  And even better we know that he is capable of more since he was subbed off in the second half.  I get the feeling that this won’t happen on a regular basis and that Mick will share it around each week.  I reckon that Krakouer will certainly be a keeper and most of us would have drafted him with that in mind.

Ex Power listed player Nick Lower continues the trend of Freo finding the mature age rookies and he would increase in price to $367,810.  His score of 98 may not be repeated each week but with the injuries that they have, it certainly isn’t impossible.  He will get a game each week and should score over 70 at least making him worthy of your 6th or 7th backline spot each and every week (given their byes are outside of league weeks).

Luke Tapscott was confirmed during the week to be playing which caused a lot of us to pick him up.  He scored a solid 80 which if consistently achieved would bring him to $300,253.  Not a bad little earner, but once again there are some big names to come back into that lineup which may force him out or at least into a smaller role.

Cameron Pederson overcame some early fatigue (or was it leather poisoning?) to rack up 97 pts which would push him up to $364,057.  My concern here is that the Roos did have a few out and when they come back he may get pushed to a smaller role in the team, but I think he will be a healthy scorer nonetheless.

One of the bigger surprises to me was Robbie Tarrant, his tidy 106 would sit him at $397,836.  I must say I didn’t put much thought into him particularly since he only average 7.5 disposals last year in his 2 games.  But he was taken as a number 15 pick so the kid has some talent.

Of the rest of the guys we had Rohan Bewick and Port’s Jarrad Irons scoring 71 which would put them up to $266,475, Little Libba was just in front of them with 72pts.  All 3 of these guys will be worth watching, however I think that Rohan has the best job security as Vossy has no choice but to play the youngsters with his injuries and a team that is widely tipped to struggle this year.

Two experienced guys that I wanted to give honourable mentions were the often forgotten Scott Stevens who scored 125 which would see him up to $469k.And just to prove the old dog still has some tricks we have Big Cox who would move up to his former glory and a price of $532,950 if he maintains 142, however, we all know that won’t last since the Roos had no rucks and Nic Nat was out so he had to do all the work (because the Q Stick was giving away too many frees when he was in the ruck).

Who were the Losers I hear you ask?  Well that would be the guys who were subbed!  Whether they started on there or ended up there, most of them stank it up through no fault of their own (I can hear the chorus of DT Coaches thanking Damian Hardwick already!)

But as I mentioned, these guys would have to keep these averages to reach these prices, but their nice prices certainly repay the faith that we had when we picked them up originally.  I know that some would have higher prices (read Swan and Gibbs) but these guys were bought on the cheap (except for Coxy) and hence you can either keep them or trade them down with the help of our mate Chook to one of the up and coming Rookies that we will see throughout the year.

As the season progresses I will try and keep you up to date with players that I think are about to reach their peak or have bottomed out and are ripe for the picking.

But for now, keep an eye on the paddock and also Chook’s Rooks to see what he has to say about who is up and coming and I will try and help you identify when to sell.
