Calvin’s Captains – Rd. 5

Welcome to this week installment of Calvin’s Hamstrings. Who wants me to curse a player this week, by picking them as my captain? Voldt and now Sam Mitchell (although it wasn’t really called a ‘hammy’) and despite my top 5 picks going great guns, I can’t pick up a disease at a brothel.

My top 5 this week did smash them up and several dudes jumped on. 24% of DT coaches went Ablett for his 133, 17% went DT TALK’s own Hodgey for his 114 and 16% took Swanny’s 119! After 2,360 votes, old Calvin’s Captains is getting great numbers.

This year already we are getting teams who are a sure thing to give up 100+ scores. Over there on the right is my GET ON THEM table showing the number of 100+ scores those teams are have given up this year. Port gave the Cats 10×100+ scores last week, the highest by far this year to one team. Still the teams to watch and to avoid are the Swan (3) and the mighty Cats (3) who are not giving anything away this year. In fact, Sydney gave away those 3×100+ scores in the first week… and none in the last 3 rounds. Look out! But as for teams to get on, you know where to look… over there on the right, up there… if you haven’t been listening. Let’s get on with the real stuff.

Last time I’ll remind you… the score next to the players listed is their average score they have on this weeks opponent in their last 3 matches against them. Let’s roll.

Westerndawgs Vs Adelaide

Gia – 101
Cooney – 96
Boyd – 90
Cross – 90
Thompson – 83
Edwards – 75
Higgins – 59
Vince – 49

For some reason Friday nights haven’t been giving us heaps of options and here it is no different. Thompson has never ever ever scored 100+ on the WBD in his career of 9 games (his only teams not to do so). Edwards is in the same boat but he has at least got 1×100+ score to his name in his career against these guys but that was after 23 games. Bernie Vince sucks here too, with just 61 in the last game against them which was back in round 7, 2009. Gia has been solid Vs the Crows with previous numbers of 80, 101, 123, 87 and should be ok. Cross has a lowest score of just 82 in his last 6 against the Crows but with only 1×100+ score coming in his last 4, he’s ‘cross’ed himself out of contention (ha ha that was a Chopper joke). Boyd has not cracked the 100+ in his last 3 game against them, but before that he went 127, 102, 106… but he might not even be playing so I don’t know why I do that… moving on…. but double check that!

Sydney Vs West Coast

ROK – 100
McVeigh – 91
Cox – 91
Kirk – 93
Goodes – 88
Priddis – 57

Ummm, not much here either. Place a bet and make things interesting, sign up here if you need too. McVeigh has had 96 and 100 in his last 2 here and Kirky has made 3×100+ scores in his last 5 with a low of 83 in his last 10 against them, consistent as hey! Ryan O’Keefe is a jet and he had 110 in his last against them and with a low of just 82 in his last 7 against them, equally impressive. Cox had 129 last time they met and has hit a small form patch with 73 and 99 coming in his last 2 games this year. Coxy is nearly back.
Coxy is back! – In his first 2 games of 2010 he averaged 7d and 20h/o. In his last 2 games this year he has bumped that up to an average of 18d, 29 h/o and with these guys being his 2nd favourite team behind Carlton, look out!

Melbourne Vs Brisbane

Bruce – 126
Green – 113
Grimes – 104*
Power – 104
Brennan – 94
Brown – 92
Black – 88

Wow, check out those Melbourne numbers… who would have thought? Brad Green has gone 90, 145, 104, 135 in his last 4 against them which makes them his favourite team by a mile and with an average of 108 in 2010 so far, the Green Machine is back from his bad 2009 season. Bruce can’t be on your radar after his start to 2010. Slow by his standards but he might bounce back here with scores of 135, 109, 133 in his last 3 against these guys, making them too his favourite team over the last 2 years. Grimesy 104 up there is just from 1 game also. Luke Power has had 121 and 113 in his last 2 against them and Brennan might be a smokey this week I reckon. He had 115 (26d, 10m, 0.4g) in his last game against them which was in round 13 last year. Brownie is also another to watch for obvious reasons. With 110, 105, 59, 128, 97 in his last 5 games J.B must be on your radar to kick a bag.
What Happened in J.B’s 59? – Well, the Lions won by 52 back in Rd.6 2008. Rivers was on him and he only managed 11d and 2g. Won’t happen again cause Rivers isn’t there.
Jack Did It– Yes he certainly did. CHF Jack Reiwoldt had 120 last week against the Dees, so if he can do that, imagine what Browndawg can do!

Port Adelaide Vs St Kilda

Cassisi – 113
Hayes – 103
Kane – 103
Montagna – 100
Boak – 91
Goddard – 76
Dal Santo – 64

Kane had just 70 last time these guys met for 20d. Before that game he has scores of 125, 113, 123, 130. Kane’s record here is amazing and certainly can not be ignored. Boak has just met these guys 3 times and had 25d in his last meeting with them for his 89 and before that he had a juicy 123. Cassisi is a weird unit isn’t he?? He has averaged 68 this year and has dropped 69k, but here he has previous scores that are crazy. He had 129 in his last games against them with 27d, 9t and before that he had 88 and 123. Lenny Hayes had 32d last time these guys met for his 130 and Montagna has previous scores of 77, 116 and 108 for his overall average of 100. Across his career against these guys they are his 2nd favourite team DT wise where he has had big scores against them during this period of 122, 142, 135, 145. Can he do it again?? The rest of these guys are disturbing… Goddard has only cracked 100 just once in his career (8gms) Vs these guys with that coming in 2007 and with previous scores of 82, 67 and 78, he has a lot to answer for despite his form. Dal Santo is possibly worse… He has played them a total of 10 times and has a top score against them of just 100 which he got back in 2006. Yuck Dal, what’s the dealeo?
Calvin Can Pick the Tags– You must listen to me… great way to make money when you can pick someone to shut another dude down. Last week I said… “Kane will play on Selwood” and he did holding him to just 60pts. This week he will tag Dal Santo, always does and certainly will kill him as he has done so many times before.
Kane @ AAMI – Solid start there for Kane in 2010 with scores of 130 and 91 and with an average of 113 this year, this might be Kane’s day!

Collingwood Vs Essendon

Swan – 116
Stanton – 105
Watson – 99
Didak – 98
Leon – 98
Pendlebury – 71
Shaw – 63

Brent Stanton should be back this week and with a lowest score of just 83 in his last 9 against them he might be an option. 88, 139 and 89 are his last 3 scores Vs the Pies and with the Pies giving up some numbers this year… look out.  Jobe has had 86 and 130 in his last 2 against them but it’s the Swanny we’ve come here to see. Dane Swan averages a nice 116 in his last 3 games against the Bombers with 107, 141, 99, 97 coming in his last 4 games… however wait one sec…. Essendon are still only his 11th best team and he has only had 3×100+ scores on them in his career of 11gms. Worry you? Ha ha, not me! Two games back Leon had a nice 150 (32d, 7t) and after dropping 65k, he could bounce back. Then we are into the “Katy Perry Bunch”  – Hot n Cold. Didak has had previous scores of 121, 52 and 122… “so Katy Perry” and Pendlebury has had previous scores of 64, 116, 34, 150, 98…. Wow “so Katy Perry.”  Heath Shaw has had 2 shockers Vs them in his last2  with score of just 60 and 28.
Lift Swanny Swanny loves the MCG, but with his 84 this year coming from that ground being his worst score there in his last 16 games, I’m asking for you to lift big gun!

Hawthorn Vs Kanagroos

Anthony – 118*
Mitchell – 109
Hodge – 90
Harvey – 82
Buddy – 79
Swallow – 79

Hodgey’s form this year has been ridiculous. But against the Roo’s he has not cracked 100+ in his last 5 games against them. Across his career he has only scored 3×100+ scores in his career of 17 games. Despite his average of 121 this year, Hodgey only averaged 86 in Launie last year (4gms) so this week… I’ll pass. Sam Mitchell might be a good option with an average of 109 in his last 3 against them. With previous scores of 73, 112 and 141 Sam might be a good pick this week, if he’s fit. Buddwood has been very average this year but he did have 113 in his last against them. Brent Harvey must be toey when he plays the Hawks with his last 2 scores of 69 and 69, just score one more points Brent and I won’t use that joke again. Swallow has had 101 and 112 in his last 2  against the Hawks and it was totally accidental that he followed those scores of Harvey too. Ha ha! Liam Anthony’s score of 118 is his only score against the Hawks and that actually happened when he played them last in Tassie after our interview with him after Roy told him he was on the ground for Ablett and that he wanted big numbers, wish granted destROY.
Is Sam Ok?– Yeah he’ll be fine. Slight niggle and when your team is down by shitloads, you’re gunna rest. Hodgey was interviewed during the week and called it “Player management”… he went on to say something like … why bother playing him when we’re getting spanked. He’ll be fine.
Aurora Gold – We often talk about it and as we are DT Nuts and cop it from being from Tassie, I will let you know once again that Aurora Stadium in Launie is the highest scoring DT ground in the country. Sam Mitchell averaged 109 here last year with 2 ripper scores of 140 and 133. It’s wide open spaces make it just DT gold!

Fremantle Vs Richmond

Pavlich – 104
Deledio – 100
Duffield – 98
Palmer – 60*

Not much here. Delids has had 112, 99, 88 in his last 3 against the Dockers. Pavlich is a surprise here. The Tigers are his worst team to play ever! With previous scores of 86, 97, 128 the Pav struggles. That 128 you see there is his only 100+ Vs them in his career of 13gms. Easily his worst team! Amazing hey! Palmer might be back this week and he had 86 in his last game against them back in 2008, but he’d only played them twice for that average of 60. Duffy is my boy, don’t get me started. He won me money last week at sportingbetafter I put $40 on him at $3.15 to beat Barlow and Gram. Oh yeah, he’s my boy. He has previous scores of 135 (28d, 4t) and 105 in his last 2 against the Tigs which makes them his favourite team of all time. Watch for him to have a big one again this week!

Carlton Vs Geelong

Ablett – 101
Corey – 100
Bartel – 100
Selwood – 100
Judd – 97
Marc – 93
Gibbs – 89
Johnson – 88
Chapman – 86
Carrazzo – 81

Carlton are playing the Cats, so lets get the Blues out of the way first. Juddy’s lowest score against the Cats is just 87 in his last 3 and old Gibbsy had a nice 107 in his last against them. Carrazzo has played the Cats 4 time sin his career and is yet to crack 100+. Lets talk Geelong… Joel Corey had 125 last week and after score under the 100 mark, I’d like to say “I called it” as I had him in my top 5. He has previous scores of 81, 100 and 120 against the Blues but the 81 was his 2nd worst score of 2009 and to go with that the Blues are his 2ndworst DT team overall. Selwood only had 60 last week but did have 128 in his last game here with 28d, 11t. Chapman is averaging a huge 137 in his last 2 games this year. In his last game against the Blues he had 102, but that was way back in 2007. That score is his only 100+ score against Carlton and for the record, these guys are his worst team by a huge 10 p.p.g across his career. Not good Chappy. Jimmy Bartel has been rock solid this year with the lowest score against his name of just 92. Jimmy has played these guys 7 times and has previous scores of 87, 115, 98 and the 115 there is the only time he has cracked 100+ against them. Gary Ablett has scored nothing under 120 this year to average 128. He averaged 125 at the MCG last year and has previous scores of 71, 123 and 109 Vs the Blues. Not overly exciting, but this is Ablett and he’ll be fine.
What does 163pts look like?– Stevie J did it two games back when he met the Blues in 2008. That day he had 29d (22k), 5.3g, 12m, big day out, but can he reproduce?.. shh but he had 35 last time they met too. But shhh.
Not a Typo – Those averages up there are spot on. Lots of 100’s I know, but they are right! Amazing though hey?

This week I have no idea who I will be picking. It will depend heavily on who I trade in. Currently tossing up the thought of going Mitchell again and I haven’t ruled out Duffy Vs Richmond. But if I trade in someone big, then they will be walk up captain. My top 5 there is in order of who I’d pick. Check the comments selection of this post towards the end of the week and I’ll post my final captain in there. I know you’ll want to know to stay clear of my pick…twang “there goes a hammy” I can hear people say it now…. Good luck this week!

Are you starting with Dane Swan?
