  • I’m not really too worried about the byes, so many trades to happen beforehand…

  • This made me realize some horrible news! I only have 2 Rnd 12 bye players!! And only one is a keeper FMDT!

  • not working for me, any tips?

  • not sure how to get this thing working??
its on my bookmark bar, but doesn’t work

    ??

  • Great set up!! Have 4 not playing RD 13, 5 for round 11, 1 for RD 12.

  • hold on…

two free trades a week, every week.

and people are still worried about bye rounds???

not to impugn footynerds work, but this is quite pointless at this stage. as long as you have a little bit of each bye round represented, no need to be worrying about it.

no such thing as a keeper this year really.

    • I disagree with this 100% (well, probably about 90%).

Jim, I love your work… you’ve been here for a long time and have been a great contributor to the site with your awesome commentary, but completely ignoring the byes due to having two trades per week, every week would be a terrible thing to do.

While we have these two gifts each week, if you’re going to spend your time using those to deal with the byes best in those weeks leading up to and around the triple threat of those pricks of things, then there are going to be some unnecessary donuts eaten.

      Why?

The best 18 comes from your starting 22. The way I have it set up at the moment has my midfield (like many) copping it in Round 13. If no trades are made there, I would have 3 players playing… meaning that even if I had 6 defenders, 2 rucks and 6 forwards playing, I’d still have a donut. Of course I will be trading though, and making upgrades… but this will happen across all lines so the structure will change (this is a big part of your thinking too). But remember, it is only two trades per week – including the bye rounds – where most coaches would have used maybe 14 or so of these trades anyway leading up to this point playing DT the ‘classic’ way.

The word keeper could go the way of the dodo with these new rules, but it still has a place when looking across structure.

Anyway… like you said you have a little bit of each bye represented is all well and good, but you do have to think about what type of players you have there (eg. premos/mid-pricers/rookies) and across which positions.

I am far from having it nailed, but the winner… and the people who do well across these weeks, will have done some thinking about the byes and making sure they are at least moving towards being covered.

I’ve dribbled some shit… but basically, ignore the byes at your own risk… while I ‘like’ my team at the moment, it will need to change because of the byes otherwise I’ll be spending a lot of hours/trades trying to get myself in the best position to score the most points I can across those rounds while looking towards the future.

      • think outside the box. there are alternatives this year.

the rule changes this year have changed the game like never before. this will be the year (I’m guessing/hoping, anyway) that a completely left field approach to everything DT will win it.

whilst i agree that you should not ignore the byes, I think my approach (which i don’t really want to reveal) has a chance of doing well.

think about it. there’s 23 rounds, with 3 bye rounds. that makes the bye rounds represent about 13% of the year. if you want to get technical, the bye rounds should only be considered up until the completion of round 13 (after which the year continues on like normal where people don’t have to worry about anything) so, 3 rounds out of the first 13 rounds is about 23% roughly a quarter. considering that a mixture of the top DT players and a mix of the “must have” players at those points in time (rookies, boys on the bubble) are spread across each of the 3 rounds means that if you try and cater too much for the bye rounds, your team will be slightly weakened (at least on paper) by the time round 14 starts (perhaps even significantly weakened). therefore I’d argue that the effect of the bye rounds continues up until at least round 16, especially considering if you used trades to cover injuries/suspensions etc in the following rounds. in my eyes the effects last longer, but round 16 at the very least I’d say.

focusing too much (i am not gonna go into detail on what qualifies as “too much”)on the bye rounds leading into the bye rounds means you are sacrificing QUALITY for QUANTITY. that is, you are sacrificing the quality of your round 1-10 team for the sake of having a few more players on the field during rounds 11-13. as i said before, focusing on the bye rounds also affects the quality of your team after the byes (rounds 14 to round?)

now although that makes sense to everyone to try and have more players on the field, if you can make up the difference of having a few extra donuts during the bye rounds by having a higher scoring team in the rounds before and immediately after, you might come out on top.

you said it yourself warnie, you like your team at the moment but also said it will need to change because of the byes. now most people like their team because they think it will score well. if that is the case with you, why change? as long as its not too top heavy with one round and light on others, keep it.

once again, there are 3 bye rounds, 20 “normal” rounds. whilst these bye rounds should not be ignored (that would be suicide) it seems to me like people are putting those rounds under the microscope, rather that looking at the year as a whole.

like i said before, the new rules this year have changed the game like never before. in previous years, the bye rounds were a big issue. but this year, i personally feel the use of two trades a week has changed that

I hope people are not getting confused. I think that the two “use it or lose it” trades will help by allowing for continuous improvement of one’s team throughout the course of the season, not by plugging holes (donuts) come bye rounds. with this continuous improvement now at the hands of every single DT coach, why trade it in for a few rounds?

look, i know a lot of the above looks like a big pile of shit but it makes a whole lot of sense in my head which is all that matters to me really. if it works out for me, great. if it doesnt, i dont care because my interest in DT this year has taken a huge shellacking. that is why I am considering a completely left field approach this year.

        • Great debate guys, I love it!
I think it could go either way this year, so both views are valid. Personally, I think I’ll go an in between approach :p

          • I haven’t even looked at my players’ byes yet. I was thinking I would start worrying about it when the byes loomed on the horizion.
Last year I made all these plans for the byes but they fell to pieces.

However, I now think I will have a look at the byes in my team. I won’t go out of my way to change anything of course, but it is good food for thought.

            Great work footynerd!

        • Great response. While I still think there is a place for thinking about byes, your ideas make a lot of sense. I will have to do a fair bit of extra thinking about this over the next week or two!

  • i really like it like everyones said bye rounds dont mean to much but great free add on

  • Round 13 is going to be carnage for everyone! FMDT

  • sooooo screwed for round 13

  • I have 10 players in each round should i worry?

  • This is so freaking difficult. I’ve been researching how to use bookmarks for the last 40 minutes and still haven’t got a clue.

    • Managed to get the bookmarks bar up, but when I try to drag the button into the bookmarks it just gives me that circle with a line through it.

      • it works with firefox.

1: right click the Footynerd! button and then click ‘Bookmark this Link’

2: go to your dream team page you must have your team up.

3: click the top left hand corner where it says firefox find bookmarks, you should find a link named Footynerd! just click it.

it should work if you just follow these instructions

        cheers
        Charlie

  • This is unrelated but what do you think of paul duffield or is there a better option in defence?

    • i have Duffield, his a good pick up for his price and he should score big this year.

    • Scoring impressively so far in the NAB. I don’t have him, but he is firmly entrenched in a long list of potentially underpriced premo defenders.

  • dont know about everyone winging about round 13…11 is my problem

    • When people are commenting about Rd13 its because most peoples premiums or “keepers” are in that round.

Round 11 is a problem for rookies, not so much for premiums, a lot of those rookies will have been culled before Rd11 though so people will need to be smart about who they upgrade to, so they even out their Rd 11-13 premiums.

  • As an example

Ablett,Swan,Beams,Pendles,Dangerfield,Murphy,Thompson,Stanton,Watson,Goddard,Heppell,Gibbs, Robinson, Thomas, Scotland,Stanley,Shaw,Greene are all Rd13 premiums and all could be in your lineup by Rd13 if you werent looking at byes.

But hey i think ppl are right, byes dont matter…..oh wait…those ppl will lose.

  • how do you get it in your bookmarks

  • How come i didnt have this last year???? would of saved me so much time page jumping back n forth, this is awesome. good work Footynerd!!!

  • This tool is fantastic Brenton, thanks for letting us all have access to it. It’s free and simple to use (once you know how to) and for those who haven’t jumped on yet I definitely would – I didn’t last year but now I see what I missed.

  • My View on Byes:

By Round 11 i plan to be top 4 in each league i play in, byes will then have no affect on me i can afford to loss a game or 2.

    Good Luck

  • got it working won’t really mean much now but come rounds 5-7 when i start thinking about getting the team ready for byes this will be really good.
    Thanks guys!

  • Wish this worked on iPad!
