Calvin’s Captains – Rd. 18

EssenTON Vs Hawthorn

In the last 2 weeks, my #1 captain option has come from the game where they play Hawthorn. This is pretty bizarre and not something I have chased. But over the last 2 weeks many premium on ballers have dominated against them. Swan (165), Beams (147), Pendles (142) and Boyd (131) didn’t struggle against them in games they lost. So what does this mean for Essendon? We’ll… surely Jobe Watson and Stanton will get amongst it this week. Jobe Watson has had 121 and 124 in his last 2 games this year and has averaged 107 on the Hawks in his last 3 (ex. 33pt Injured game). He’s averaged 120 at Etihad this year from his 9 games and should be pretty good. Stanton has had previous scores of 119 and 127 on the Hawks but has only averaged 81 in his last 3 games this year. If he can avoid the ‘loose’ tags of the Hawks, he might just smack out something like he was at the start of the year.

Percentage Booster?

Collingwood will head to Skoda to play the Giants with the plan to smack them up! Collingwood have the lowest percentage out of the top 6 teams on the ladder at the moment and need to fix that up this week. The Hawks did this a few weeks back when they played the Giants in a game when they won by 162. On that day, 11 Hawthorn players crack the magical ton. This will surely happen again as Collingwood look to set up a top 4 finish. Since returning from his injury, Scott Pendlebury has had scores of 142 and 117 and Dayne Beams has kept his wicked roll going with 147 and 137 in recent weeks against quality opposition (Haw/Geel). Then we have Dane Swan who has averaged 129 in his last 3 games this year with a huge 165 last week. Swan has only played outside of Melbourne once this year and had 143 (GABBA). His form is better than anyone’s with an average of 138 in his last 5 and you’d be mad to turn your back on him this week.

But… check out some surprising numbers other premium guns have had on the Giants this year. Amazing really… yeah a few have smashed them as you’d expect, but these are really quiet low compared to what we were expecting. Does this worry me? No… the highest scoring Collingwood player will have 40d and a bag of goals next to their name and I think these 3 guys can easily do that!

The Others

Gary Ablett – clearly the best of this lot here. Last year he had just 23pts on the Swans before he was injured but before when he was with Geelong, he used to kill them big time with previous scores of 127, 167, 141, 126 and 150. He’s had 143, 104 and 148 in his last 3 at Metricon and after scores of 143 and 128 in his last 2 games this year. All the signs suggest he’ll be good this week.
Trent Cotchin – had 120 on the Blues earlier this year and is averaging 115 in his last 3. But, Cotchin has only cracked the 120+ mark we want from a captain 3 times this year from his 16 games. Not good enough in my pirate eyes.
Matthew Boyd – will be pretty good! He had 146 (39d) on the Saints in Rd. 3 of this year and a nice 143 on them in 2011. Clinton Jones seems to avoid him and although Boydy had his 2nd worst score (82) for the year last week, he’ll be back this week.
Ivan Maric – watch the team selections this Thursday night and if Carlton go into the game without rucks, watch out for Maric. Last week, Minson killed them for 99pts and a massive 54 hit outs. So if big Will can do that… Ivan might be due for a big one after being quiet in recent weeks (83 & 88).
Joel Selwood – requested by my twitter buddy @MattCraigDT so lets have a look. Joel had 106 on the Crows earlier this year and 84 last year. He did have 5×100+ scores in a row before that on them but after 97 and 95 in the last 2 weeks, we must go with someone better… even though he should kill it on his home ground!
Sam Mitchell – Sam has only played at Etihad once this year and had 125 on that day. He had 128 on the Bombers last year and has been going pretty well in recent weeks averaging 111 in his last 3. Should be solid.
Brett Deledio – is carrying a lowest score of just 103 in his last 5 games this year and is averaging 116 in his last 3. But… he has only scored 1×100+ on the Blues in his career of 14 games and had 91 on them in Rd. 1 of this year. Dusty Martin got the Carrz tag that day, but surely he’ll go to either Cotch or Delids this week.

There you go… all the best, thanks for hanging out with the Irish Pirate and good luck for the up and coming week.

  • Pendles? Anyone?

  • Nice list, there is no way I could have read it though

  • well i only have 2 of those… gazza and boyd… boyd F__KED me last week…

so i will be going Gazza…

    • Perma captain material, is Gaz. I jumped from him to Sammy Mitchell last week and still ruing the missed points… Can’t resist Pendles vs a severely undermanned and tiring GWS tho. Smash ’em boys!!

  • my last 2 trades of the year… then i will have none left…

    hayes – swan
    dickson – pearson

    or

    ryder – jacobs
    dickson – beams/pav
(this one give fixes my ruck structure as i have ryder, goldy (big o, redden) )
and ryder is out for another 2-3 weeks… for F–Ks Sake

    • do the ryder – jacobs dickson – beams option (not pav his form will die down, beams is a gun)

  • Calvin, Calvin!!!!
I don’t know who to put my captain!
    Can you please help me???

  • i do think stanton might come out firing this week…

he wont be tagged as hard as he has been… (he has been tagged hard last couple of games)

and we know if he gets a run that he gets scores of 140+

  • Yay! Have all 5 of those.

Swanny should kill the Giants. Locking him in!

  • Nice to have all 5 of those guys but will have to leave the C on Swanny

  • This is to everyone who plays FPL.

Should i have bench players priced at a low price (e.g. 4.5m) or should i have them priced at around mid price (e.g. 7m)??

  • a bench with players priced at 7????? No, just no.

  • Pendlebury looks back with a vengeance! Will be locking my C on him this week.
6 trades left sitting at 8th position, will be finalising my team in Santiago Chile this week, nervous times ahead!

    • Enjoy Santiago amigo! I was there a few years back… can highly recommend “coffee with legs”, or an R-rated version of it.

  • would love to pick Swan just don’t know how good he’ll go. If he really wants to he could easily pump out 150+ but i could see him on 60 at quater time and just relax the rest of the game and finish on 100. While Beams will come out as hard as he can the whole game and will get a nice 145.

  • This maybe the last chance the Pies get to rest their guns!!!! Not trying to put a bad spin on things, at least we know pendles is rested up……..just throwing it out there……however with that said The Swan is locked and loaded…

  • I agree with Paul I think come Thursday Night we will be scrambling find cover for our gun pies i.e. Swan, Beams, Sidey

  • swanny

  • Hey guys just 1 question i’m thinking of trading Giles this week but not sure who with 408k any thoughts? with leaving me with 1 trade left

  • If one is struggling to win a match this week, this is just the week to go someone other than Swan, the vast majority will pick him. You never know..

  • scott gumbleton willgo up in price and cloke hopefully with a be of 122 will go down i could afford cloke as f7

    • Trust me you don’t want Cloke a your F7, I have had him since the begining and he has not done anything except for give me a headache.

  • Tempted to go Beams but can’t bring myself to take it off Swanny. Really hope nobody relevant gets rested this week, could see some record high scores!

    • Beams for VC… though he’s becoming good enough to outgun Swanny on his day. Definitely not the worst choice!

  • 2 trades left and 181,100 in the kitty.
    Worth upgrading giles.
(this is my bad team btw)

  • How about Sidey as a smokey????

  • I hope the Pies don’t rest/late withdrawl anyone, make sure you don’t put the both the C and VC on pies players.

Gonna go Swanny with Ablett VC

  • (c) on Pendles just because I know he’s had a rest so he won’t be the one to have it this week (at least that’s what I am hoping)
(vc) on Ablett because it’s him

On another note. Is it worth going Gibson—> Couch giving me $$$ and double DPP and then go Priddis —> Swan which would leave me with 3 trades left and 100k?

  • Will definitly be going Pendles this week. Swanny just looks like a bloke who wont give a shit about GWS, therefore just laze around, still rack up 120 but nothing more. Pendles more chance of getting 140+ IMO :)

    • Yeah I agree, they might stick Swanny up forward to give him a little rest and Pendles will be wanting to build his form from the injury… that’s just my opinion anyway. I’ll be going (C)Pendles and (VC)Ablett.

  • Those wankers have now been banned. Sucks they ruin the experience for others.

    • Might want to delete the one on bone of contention article as well

      • Thanks mate. Yeah, gone through them. What an annoying waste of time.

        • Much better things to do on a Wednesday night!

Might need to have a rethink on some mods mate. You can’t be expected to patrol the grounds 24/7.

          It is a shame though.

  • Who else but the main man

    Swan (C)

    Boyd (VC)

  • I just can’t find the courage to take the big C off Swan

Also, i was wondering if it was worth going
M.Williams –> Couch which would free up cash to go Giles –> McEvoy
This trade would complete my team and add a DPP link
The downside is i’d only have 1 trade left for the rest of the season

Im not sure if its worth it?

  • Beams or Pendles is tough, I am thinking Beams for no other reason than Pendles’ tibea

  • Not a single mention of Murphy this week? Not as captain mind you….NO CHANCE! But GEEZ he’s cheap! Dont even need to downgrade anyone to bring him in, im stoked as for some strange reason I left my M6 upgrade till last….I guess my mid back ups were all scoring ok so i fixed forward and backlines first, but ended up with Gibbo and 180K plus 5 trade left this week and it only cost me 80k to bump him to Murph. Happy F’n Days! On the captain note, I can see Sidey having a day out this week too but damned if I will EVER go there again…I have all five named above but will leave the C on swannie until last minute friday, then make a rushed, undisciplined decision as always! thanks Calvin…

  • Is any of the following options worth my last trade worth or should I save it 4 later in the year?
    Cloke to Sidebottum (F7)
    Williams to NVB (M7)
    Townsend to Malceski (D7)

  • Great stuff Calvin!… but shouldn’t it be… Cotchin not good enough in your pirate’s eye?

Swan for me. Unless he’s rested, then it’s Beams. Unless he’s rested.

  • Great Stuff as Usual Vin!
Gotta go Swanny. Anything under 180 will be a fail in my eyes in a game he (and the whole team) should be able to do what they want! Will also be expecting huge scores from Pendles and Beams.
Shaw also needs to pull his finger out and ton up!
    Genghis out….

  • cloke sounds good :P

  • I think that Brett Deledio and Ivan Maric have to be considered for sure, if kreuzer doesnt play Ivan Maric should purely dominate the Blues undermanned ruck, Deledio and Cotchin are ball winners and Deledio off the half back line cleaning up looks tasty… Ablett will do something Ablett like, as he does every week and Swan and Pendlebury should dominate the giants… I will probabaly go with Ablett but the othetrs can surely be considered

    • Hence they are listed under “The Others:

One not there is my man Pavlich who should tear the Power apart, if it was in the west I would consider it but you can’t go past Swan vs GWS.

  • Wanna go Hall to Couch then get Swan who do i trade out for him? 34k in bank 6 trades, was thinking either Martin or Zorko

Deledio Scotland Goddard Carrazzo Birchall Heppell Broughton (Morris) (Spurr)

Ablett Boyd Watson Pendlebury Thompson Zorko (Gibson) (M.Williams)

    Cox Maric (Redden) (Stephenson)

Beams Sidebottom Franklin Robinson Chapman Dangerfield D.Martin (Treloar) (Hall)

    • Trade out Zorko, Martin is more reliable to get an 80+ score, whereas Zorks will get either 120 or 60

  • i want to captain gaz pendles and swan :(

  • with the defensive pressure sydney have been putting on lately, im loathe to captain ablett. Sydney know if they can keep gazza quiet there is no way they will lose
