Upgrade Time

We are now well into upgrading season with some of our cash cows getting nice and plump for the picking. Below is a list of upgrades in my opinion.

  1. Joel Selwood: If you take the 27 he scored in less than a quarter before being KO by Farren Ray’s hip he is averaging a massive 119.7, this would be the best average in the league, even better that Pendles, Boyd and Swan. Besides the 27 he has only scored under 100 once and that was against the unfriendly DT side Sydney. His next lowest after that is 116. His games in this time haven’t been easy either playing Collingwood, Hawthorn, Carlton who are all top 4 sides. Has a good run home playing Adelaide 2 times and Richmond, Melbourne, Gold Coast and Brisbane.
  2. Dean Cox: The second place has to go to the big cox, he has been the highest averaging ruck by a fair bit this year and is the 4th highest averaging player in the game. He has fallen below the 100 mark only twice this year and has a nice ceiling of 141. Also plays Adelaide twice as well as Gold Coast, Brisbane, Melbourne, Port Adelaide and Richmond on the run home. He really is a must have this year.
  3. Scott Pendlebury: After having a small form slump and dropping a bit in price the highest averaging player in the game is back after a big 131 on the weekend. Has a massive ceiling of 166 and has only dropped under 100 3 times this year. Plays Gold Coast, Port  Adelaide, Richmond, Brisbane and Melbourne in the run home. Best option would be to get after his bye in round 13. And is only selected by 28% of the coaches.
  4. Matthew Boyd: The second highest averaging player in the league this year is a must have in any good side this year. Has only dropped under 100 twice this year and has a massive ceiling of 162. Plays Gold Coast, Melbourne, Adelaide, Port Adelaide in the run home. Is only selected by a small 22% of coaches.
  5. Lance Franklin: The second highest averaging forward this year is back to his best of a couple of years ago. After a slow-ish start to the year he has averaged a very nice 110.8 in his last 5 games. Has fallen below 100 only 4 times this year and has a nice ceiling of 144. Has nice run home playing Gold Coast x2, Port Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Honourable Mentions

  • Luke Hodge: Cheap, hitting form and is a gun
  • Scott Thompson: Playing well and putting up big scores in losing team and not many selections
  • Marc Murphy: Putting up big scores of late and is also relatively unselected
  • Dane Swan: Already selected by almost the whole comp and is currently injured

What about Gary Ablett?

I will probably get slammed for not including Gablett in the upgrade list but I don’t see him as a good upgrade. This year in 7 games he has cracked the ton only 2 times. Has already missed one game from injury/soreness and will no doubt miss more. Young team will tire and struggle towards end of year possibly. But how about the massive 156? Wow 156 against Adelaide he must be back, NOT. 52,000 coaches have already been sucked into Ablett and I feel sorry for them.

  • libba – mzungu
    harris – hodge
    completes midfield
but is mzungu better off in forward line

  • im taking a punt on fallen premium Del Santo this week, saves me a trade and i think he’ll be back in form soon – well hoping so. My teams be injury ravaged so this option saves me a trade…

    • Hang on, how does trading in Dal Santo save you a trade?

    • Can only assume you mean you’ll save a trade by not having to downgrade and upgrade to get in Dal. Just a straight swap for a player who has hit their limit???

      • I thought that was relatively obvious. But if Lyon keeps playing him off half back it’s a great trade.

  • How do these trades sound?

    Libba—> mzungu

    Swallow–> hodge

Also what are peoples thoughts on Stanley as a 7th defender? avg of only 73.25 but has been in great form lately. What would he have to average in order to become a keeper? 80? Thanks

    • good trades. yeh il be keeping stanley, hes solid. most likely better off upgrading in other areas

      • Yeah thats what i’m thinking. If he can pump out about 75-80 for the rest of the season that’l be fine. What are peoples thoughts on Darling. Apart from his 50 last week he has been solid with an average of 74. Do people think he can be a potential keeper or not?

        • Cash in Darling. He’s been a consistent scorer in the 70’s but hasn’t hit much higher. Once in the 100 point zone I think. He’s ceiling isn’t high and his price won’t rise now. It’ll start to flat line for the remainder of the year. Straight swap to Didak in two weeks could be a goer if he shows his form has turned the corner

          • Great trade if Didak comes back into form before his bye and Darling can hold his value until then. Have been thinking about that trade myself.

  • Hey Boys,

Got 25k in the bank and just wanted to here your thoughts…

Swallow or Harris to I. Smith (Which one Harris or Swallow? Harris will probably play the whole year but is worth less….)

Liberatore to Pendlebury? (Or are there any other midfielders I should be looking at? I have Swan so that would be mean two Collingwood)

    • Help

    • I’d off load Harris before Swallow and if you can get Pendles in then that will help offset the loss of Swan when he’s lazing by the pool in Arizona!

If you don’t have Jelwood though I’d be getting him in before all others IMO

  • I just had a thought RE Ablett – I wonder what % of points he was getting from goals in past seasons. I have a feeling it was a reasonble amount. 45 last year from memory?

His goal scoring seems to have dried up this season for whatever reason, probably a good reason to steer clear for the moment.

    • That coupled with a lot more one two’s. Handball then receive and kick or handball again. He scored a lot of those 4 and 5 point combos in years gone. Not too many one two’s available at the Suns.

      • Yeah good point.

Where was this critical thinking when I went Harris to Ablett last week :/

        • he has only had 12 marks for the year also, he has never been a big marker but i think this reflects him having a player on his hammer 24/7..

  • Who would you choose between hodge, thompson or murphy?

  • Hodge if you’re after value for money. Murphy or Thompson if you want consistency across the board. Toss a coin between those two!!

  • Matera to Mzungu, Dangerslut to Sylvia…Was thinking of downgrading Harris to Mzungu but want to keep him as a 7th mid so it’s Matera to Mzungu. Was initially going to trade Dangerslut to Hodge but I want to keep the DPP link with the forwards. I reckon Hodge and Sylvia will average around the same, and because I already have Franklin, Rioli and Puopolo, not sure if I can afford to have more Hawks. Therefore, Sylvia is welcome!
Hopefully it’s more of a welcoming for me than when I picked him up last year, the week before he rooted his toe.

  • Hey guys got 13 trades left and placed in the top 2000 so will give you a run down of what im planning to do:

    Rnd 11
    Harris >Mzungu
    Warnock > Bailey
    $ = 326,700

    Rnd12
    Matera >Fyfe
Swallow > any premo around 430,000 any thoughts?

    Rnd 14
    Cotchin > Swan

That should leave my team looking like this:

DEF: Goddard, Fisher, Gibbs, Adcock, Rawlings, Heppell, Lower (puopolo, Toy, Otten)

MID: Boyd, Swan, Pendles, Hodge, Bartel, Premo? (Mzungu, Smith, Hibberd)

    RUC: Cox, Smith (Bailey, Charman)

FOR: Chapman, Sylvia, Johnson, Higgins, Fyfe, Roo, Knights (Lynch(GC), Richardson, Darling)

  • Hey guys

I have Jimmy Bartel but he’s been spudding up lately and has costed me any chance of winning the overall competition.

Already did Matera > Mzungu, thinking of this trade:

    Bartel > Murphy

What is your thoughts on this trade as I understand that this is a sideways trade with plenty of upside in it. Should I proceed with this trade or just wait hold and keep Bartel for the remainder of the season?

    Cheers :)

    • Do those trades (Murphy’s in great form), but how has he costed you any chance of winning overall?? what’s your current rank?

      • Ranking slid from 278 to 1664 and I’ll use 2012 as a step-up point for a chance at winning the car as Dream Team will go back to normal.

  • Heys, just a quick question reguarding my final midfield upgrade.
three options, one spot who to choose?

Harris > Sylvia: Mr Consistent chappy of 2010, easy final four weeks and will leave me with 2 ddp fwd in the midfield, one will be on the bench.

Harris > Hodge : Underpriced, injury free, has had a good month and is the captain and is wanting to prove a point to his critics.

Harris > Mitchell : Has been down on form, is a ball magnet, has been wanting to prove a point after standing aside to let hodge be captain.

    • Based on current form i’d go Harris > Hodge. Just be mindfull he’s carrying a dodgy achilles and it could come back to bite in the latter part of the year. May be worth the risk though, and will save you a bit of cash.

  • Whas everyones thoughts on Nick Dalsanto? cheap and could be a unique pick

    • Whats

    • Mate, I’m also eyeing him off. After Hodge, I reckon Dal Santo will be the next cheap premium to pop. At $330K his price has surely bottomed out due to the saints recent form slump but after last weeks demolishing of Freo where he was a ball-magnet it looks like the saints are on the rise and it is a good sign of things to come.

The only fault is his b/e of 90 so while he should blitz it this week it wouldn’t kill you to wait one more week.

  • Looking at getting in Mzungu and another mid Premium (Ablett/Thompson/Hodge) this week. Just curious as to what people might think of who I should trade.

Current midfield: Mundy, Boyd, Selwood, Kennedy, D.Swallow, Buckley (Martin, Harris, Wallis)

Harris is definitely going to be one of them just unsure about the other one. I know I shouldn’t sideways trade but my “Kennedy Experiment” hasn’t worked so far and I don’t think it will. Not sure whether I should bite the bullet on that one and get him out now or go Buckley or Swallow instead. Thinking I want to keep Swallow and will be getting another Def/Mid DPP within the next few weeks so guess it’s between Kennedy and Buckley.

    • Planning to get Pendlebury in for Rd. 15 as well. May do it for Rd.14 depending on his breakeven as I’m not sure he’ll smash out a huge score against Sydney.

    • I got rid of Kennedy 2 weeks ago, not worth keeping him if you can afford to offload him.

  • Rischitelli or A Swallow as unique for 6th mid? Upgrading D Swallow

Cuurent mids Swan, Boyd, Selwood, Ablett, Pendlebury, D Swallow

    • why not murphy, thompson or mundy ? still unique averaging better.. if your set on one of those 2 would go rischitelli..

  • Please excuse the repost. I wrote this yesterday but fits this much better here.

Who is more important to get in this week? Jelwood/Coxy or even Mzungu?

I have been raping the nests everyweek so cashed up with $584,800 and heaps of future cows now. Somehow I got carried away and have been collecting more cash cows then guns. Have to admit they just keep coming..:(
Its like a sale that you just can’t go past and are wondering how the fuck the price tag is on the item and even the person at the check out hasn’t picked up on it.

    Need to choose between;

    D.Swallow/Liba/Krakouer/(Curnow – could but won’t) -> Selwood or MZungu (Can’t go past this DPP’er)

Petrie/ Z. Smith -> Cox. (Still got Sandi)

Or should I try to break the habit and stop being a screwge and Jellywood-Cox it up?

Also what is the ETA on Curnow?

  • So….. what is the Writers real team name? “Wecky’s Wackos” doesn’t exist in the rankings database

    • It’s Wecky’s Wacko’s sorry missed the ‘ in Wacko’s. I’m ranked 3433.

  • whos the best mid under 420k
am thinking 1. hodge, 2. thommo, 3. Monty 4. Mundy
who do u guys reckon is the best to get for no. 5/6 possie in mid

    • depends on how many from other teams u got, id go thommo to be unique and he can smash it

    • was thinking the same thing mike, im already have hodge so im tossing up between thompson and ablett

    • Marc Murphy anyone? Judd cops the tag so he gets the ball a bit.

      • Im seriously considering Murphy this week he is a gun, but also considering Thompson. Not sure what do at this stage

    • Whos the best mid? monty for sure kicks the ball the most out of all (52%) and thats where the monies at.
Can’t wait to get him after the bye.

If you want a smoky under $420k Shiels is chopping up, has been all yr

  • Whats the general way to go about a season in regards to trades and spacing them out. I unknowingly started using 2 every week not knowing exactly how DT worked and now i’m sure i’m gonna pay for it come finals time. Is there anywhere that explains how DT fully works and when finals are etc etc… ? Anyone got any tips or hints, cheers ..

    • i try get my team set then leave 8 trades for the last 8 rounds, just for injuries and wateva,

even though i only have 13 left for the season atm :S

  • who is considered the best hawk defender to upgrade too, birchall? suckling? guerra?

and from any of the supporters…..why would you pick them?

  • hey guys,
what should i be doing with Brad Sewell?
i can upgrade him to anyone but is it worth it or too much of a sideways trade?
    hes averagin 89

    • I would leave that ‘upgrade’ until last. If you have spare trades later, use them on that.

  • is it worth trading out A. Swallow for L. Hodge because Swallow has the bye first week of the finals
and who is a good upgrade option for my foward line that has buddy, fyfe, sylvia, goodes? Is Pav worth getting on?

    • Swallow > Hodge is too sideways for me..don’t do it. All of the forward upgrades are premo’s and good.

  • My plan is to go Bartel -> Selwood at some point unless he improves somehow.

This week I can go Harris -> Hodge, but I’m not completely sold on Hodge and there are risks considering I already have Suckling, Franklin, Bailey and Puopolo in terms of both rd. 17 bye and rd 24 when many players could be rested for the bye. Then again Hodge is on the cheap, in good form and a proven performer.

I could do that or the jelwood trade now. Bartel will only go down this week and Selwood should get the 123 BE against a hapless bulldogs side in geelong. Surely there will be as good opportunities in coming weeks for cheap premiums. problem is though this only replaces a premium instead of adding one and my team will be a bit weak as a result.

  • Time to upgrade Duigan? Playing Port this week so might get some points. Defence is looking weak atm.

    • If you look at Duigan’s stats, he socres big in games against quality opposition but not so well against the worse teams. He mightn’t score so well against Port

      • he’s been a great cash cow but with only two big scores i consider him ready for an upgrade. Having said that, i will probably have to hold him until after Hawtthorn’s bye (round 17) as i’m running low on trades (10).

  • Hey guys,
I need some help should I trade

    J. Voldt > Sylvia

    or

    Duigan > Suckling ???

    • go suckling now. Sylvia’s price should go down if anything while Suckling’s will go up. That is if you can afford to cover the richmond bye this week

  • d swallow > j selwood complete

  • Made my mind up.

Duigan to Broughton-he’s back baby. Consecutive score rises over the past three weeks, his price curve is on the up and priced at 290k. Shazayam! Got bench cover if Goddard pulls a heart muscle.

Harris to Marc M- will go close to being the no 1 scorer for the year and no-one has him. JUMP ON.

It means I don’t get Gu til next week, but buying him as a bench keeper, so his first price rise is irrelevant to me.

My fwd line is a little weak with Petrie covering 211 and Chappy out. Means I have C-Rich and T Lynch on the ground. I am not gunna waste a trade to cover a POSSIBLE donut/weak score from these guys.

    So, my team this week:
B: Gibbs Goddard Enright Stanley Lower Broughton Poo ( Buckley Jacobs Toy)
M: Pendles Boyd Swan Mundy Marc A Swallow (Delids Iles Bewick)
    R: Cox Dish (211 Broc M)
F: Buddy Stevie J Goodes NRoo Knights Goodes T Lynch C-Rich (Chappy Matera J Tippett)

This week leaves me with 12 trades left and close to 100k in the bank. Placed 7859 and preparing for The Run Home.

    • I’m considering Laidler to Broughton this week. I havent seen Freo’s last 3 games but I saw most of their other games this year and Broughton was nowhere to be seen in most of them. does anyone have anything more than his last 2 scores to support trading him in? I have heaps of cash so Suckling and Fisher are also on the radar. Decisions, decisions.

  • My team this week:

Gibbs, Adcock, Shaw, Heppell, Goddard, Stanley, Puopolo (Deledio, Lower, Jacobs)
Pendles, Boyd, Swan, Murphy, Selwood, Ablett (Swallow, Hibberd, I. Smith)
    Cox, Smith (211, Derickx)
Franklin, Goodes, Chappy, Riewoldt, Knights, Darling, Mzungu (Pitt, Lynch (GCS), Prestia)
    CASH LEFT: $91, 100

Did the following trades this week
    Matera > Mzungu
    BARTEL > MURPHY

Got cover in Lower should Goddard become a late withdrawal on Saturday.

    Next week:
Darling > Didak to complete my forward line.

This will now leave me with 8 trades to be used for LTI”s and my team will be almost complete. Any suggestions on future trades would be great :)

    • Stanley to Sammy Fish maybe to complete the backline?

I’d also be trying to get Sylvia in to the forwards but apart from that you look extremely solid

    • Yeah I wouldn’t go crazy with trades if you only have 8 left.

I agree with trading stanley out for another defender. Fish would be a good buy, or maybe a hawk.. I’m thinking of going suckling?

  • I’ve most likely read this wrong, but is Swan injured? AFL teams says differently… But they’re never right…

    • Swan is playing injured this week. He looks likley to miss against melbourne in a couple of weeks. (to go to USA for treatment)

  • Matera or Harris to Mzungu?

Then I’m thinking Toy to Suckling simply because the Hawks look like they’ll keep this tactic going if it worked on the weekend. If they do I’ll be a very happy dreamteamer!

    Thoughts on the first trade?

    • Id go Matera, injured and wont go up any even when he comes back. Harris can still go up in price

      • Yeah I know but I read an article and he’s not injured they just thought it was time his body needed a rest… they reckon he’s one of their best this year and that he has more to come… i dunno this article has persuaded me a little… only thing with harris is he doesn’t play on the field and it feels useless leaving a bloke worth over 200 on your bench where there are guys valued at 90k who get similar scores.

        • He’s defiantly injured, he’son the injury list and there was talk of him not going the perth because of his groin before injury list came out as well

  • Finally after 16 odd hours of strategising, calculating and coming up with different scenarios I have arrived at a plan. I missed a few options by a measley $3000, due to Obrien, Matera, Harris and Libba all scoring terribly last week.

I have figured how to finish the team while leaving 5-7 trades left for the run home rounds.

I should have reasonable cover across most lines as well.

    Welcome to Mzugu this week.

  • Matera or Harris? for Mzingu

    Then Duigan for Fisher/Broughton?

  • get Peter Matera in hes a gun he was at my colts training tonight that i coach hes still got it

  • Thinking of getting pendles this week or perhpas downgrading to Harris. Does anyone have this week’s breakevens?

  • What is S. Buckleys B/E vs Swallows B/E?

I’m upgrading one today to my 7th Premium Mid.

    Thanks
