AFL Dream Team 2011: The Rules

2011 will be a completely different season... how will we deal with Gold Coast and the subsequent byes?
Due to Gold Coast entering the AFL next year, there are some changes to the Dream Team competition for 2011. We know the the AFL roster will be out to 24 rounds for next season so that each team is able to have 2 byes. In this, there will be 19 rounds with 8 games played (1 bye) and 5 rounds with 7 games played (3 byes). We will see the 2011 roster in late October, so stay tuned for that. It will certainly be the start of some strategy discussion.
Because of these changes, Virtual Sports have made some alterations to how DT will run. To compensate for the bye(s), we will have 24 trades and we will still only be able to trade twice a week. Our teams will have added depth with an extra player on the bench for defenders, midfielders and forwards, with these three extra players, our squads are extended from 30 to 33.
The salary cap is inline with the actual cap placed on AFL clubs. In 2011 it will be $8,212,500. This is ‘irrelevant’ as to making the game ‘easier’. It will depend on what the ‘magic number’ will be. I am tipping that the base priced players are unlikely to be less than $100K.
As for pricing of Gold Coast players, their side will have quite a few dudes that have played AFL. Their prices will be based (with relevant discounts) on their previous averages. All rookies are likely to be priced as they have been in the past – on the draft order.
Leagues will change a little for next year too. It looks as though there will still be 16 teams for a league, however we will start playing Head-to-Head from Round 1. When there are the 5 rounds with 3 byes in them, league games won’t be played. So with 19 one bye rounds, 15 of those will be the normal roster matches and 4 of those will be the finals series… pretty much as it is currently.
This will take some pressure off coaches coming up against opponents worry about covering players with the bye, especially if those rounds ended up having Collingwood, St Kilda and Geelong having a bye the same week! Those playing for national ranking will have to think hard about how to limit the damage over those weeks. More will come on that when the roster is released.
That’s pretty much all we know so far. We’re looking forward to next year and working out plenty of strategy in how to deal with 2010!

thank god for 3 bye rounds not having league matches!
Yeah, a simple thing… but very important!
Next question will be what rounds those ’3 bye’ weeks will be in! Will add more to strategy. Can’t wait for the roster to come out and then we can start analysing it!
+1 but still next year will take some serious planning and strategy. It could all turn out terribly if you don’t do so… :/
Is there a way to estimate how much players such as Drew Petrie, Andy Otten and other player who played below 4 games, will be worth
That will be a hard thing to estimate… depends on what Virtual Sports will do with the magic number and what they could possibly do with ‘discounts’ next year. We saw a few tweaks to that this yeah… so who knows for 2011.
Going to be a very interesting off-season.
thats why your, and the websites help will be all the more valuable, I’m sure I’ll be grateful for it
this 3 more trade thing is all well and good however it really doesnt help us a whole lot as this years salary cap was $7,962,500, and the new one being $8,212,500. this means we get 3 players for a price of $250,000. This averages at $83,000 per player which means that we just have to choose the very lowest price players. Now that is no worry in itself…except if you have garry ablett being replaced by a base price rookie which is no guarantee of even playing.
Will make the game harder and a little more strategic… that is a good thing! Find some more bargains!
i guess with GC, there should be plenty of them
At least with the byes teams get to rest their guns so they are less likely to do it during the season (i hope). Really looking forward to next year. Did pretty well in my rookie year but i have lots of room to improve. I like the added strategy next year that will make or break some teams. Wonder if the DPP will be expanded more next season, could help with the byes.
Yeah – with two byes per team, hopefully they are getting a decent enough rest. We will have to wait and see about when these triple bye rounds are, as they will determine if players get enough of a rest. Lets say, for example, that Geelong have their 2nd bye later in the season… they are less likely to rest any guns as if they had their 2nd by in Rd 14 (of 24).
A small thing, but it would be nice if emergency dual position players could act as cover for both positions they are eligible to play in.
It would be good if they made it so you could use 3 trades in a round, but you could only do this say, 2 times per year. Would help the people chasing overall ranking (like myself) dont you think warnie?
Yea like in some other Fantasy Sports games, there is a wildcard that you can use only once in the season, but which allows you to have an extra trade that round (so 3 trades available instead of 2)
Well congratuf**kinglations a stunning piece of detective work there.
f**k off then and dont post here you fool.
There will be such a massive difference next year in playing for ranking vs playing for league.
You will really have to chose now which one to aim for. The last couple years its almost been the same but now you have to think about copping some donuts during the byes and keeping trades or avoiding donuts.
Thats really tough.
Will be interested to know whether they plan to let us join more then 3 leagues next season or if it will stay the same.
Warnie just wondering when you are going to pay up mate for the cash leagues ?? Wouldnt of thought there was any reason why it would not of been paid already ?? I sent a email to you guys, but no respnse still !!
I havent paid it because Chop is supposed to be in charge of that. He’ll sort it out soon… I hope!
Well we will have to give him the chop lol. Yeah i got half spent and missus wants some coin lol!!
The DPP addition was a great idea for this year, but proved to be useless for most teams due to lack of eligible/desireable players.
I think they should extend this feature for next year to cover as many players as possible. When you think about it, there are a lot of players for whom you could make a case for DPP classification. eg. Ruckmen/midfielders who “rest” in the forward line (Hille/Ablett) taggers could be MID/DEF, you could even have MID/RUC (Cox). If you wanted to stretch it as far as possible you would only leave pure forwards (Hall/Fevola) and pure defenders (Scarlett/Merrett) as the only ones with single positions. Basically anyone you could make a slightly reasonable case for DPP should get it.
The most useful thing they could do would be to classify ALL first year players (and other bottom priced players) as DPP’s. This would be a huge help in covering donuts, giving you huge (and more realistic) flexibility within your squad.
The problem with the DPP is the classifications are done by Championdata for the AFL, not for VirtualSports. DreamTeam has no input to the classifications – would be nice if they did their own classifications, but can’t see it happening.
Dpp was great this year, I finished with 2 donuts all year. Pav, Chapman, Goodes, Rok, Brennan, didak, and rookie Henderson. All mid/fwd and covered perfectly for eachother. Obviously they all hit different form at different times but they were all popular and effective players.
Also early in the season I took advantage of hodge & Gram so when gram went down he could rest in midfield where I had better cover, then upgraded him to chappie who then went into fwds to cover whoever.
what bout emergencies: would be lovely to have 4 emergencies instead of 3 due to extra players on the pine.. even tho they can take positions.. no point having them there if late withdrawls etc.. it is part of the game but 12 on the bench.. 3 emergencies.. bit silly.
i mean tho 3 extra.. not 12 on the pine haha
I dont want these little hepful things from Virtual Sports
just makes things easier for people.
makes u prepare more, therefore the better teams will actually be the highest ranked instead of some pretenders who just steal advice/ teams from sites like these. Keep your cards close to you next year boys !
I reckon anything that makes the game a bit harder has to be a good thing. The very high salary cap this year meant nearly everyone ended up with the near perfect team of gun players.
Next year we will be faced with some tough decisions which will hopefully separate the teams a bit more.
All i want to add is Collingwood, Carlton and to some extent Essendon, will get the better times to have the byes as in, in the middle and then a couple of weeks before finals. So planning around that will be essential as well.
Personally i think dual position will be vital and also the mid rangers, especially. I think instead of having 3 premiums and 3 rookies like this year, it will be 2 premiums 2 mids and 2 rookies plus the bench rookies i think. Even that looks like a lot. Also having a player who is consistent and plays every week will be invaluable as a bench in each position.
Thats just my thought rambles and everything
Why will there be ‘relevant discounts’ on existing players that end up at the Gold Coast. Surely the manipulation of the draft rules over the last couple of years and with at least 16 quality players from the other clubs GC should be competitive, certainly more-so than the Eagles.
The out-of-contract players that end up there (Bock, Krak, Gablett, Pavlich etc) should all be assessed as normal.
I thought they meant players like Daniel Harris who have played AFL before, but didn’t play this year. You would expect his price to be based on his previous average, minus a discount. Just as you would expect for a player who missed a year through injury.
For example Ben Cousins on his comeback last year… but that was a random number from Virtual Sports (made no sense – just wanted to mess with our heads).
HEY! Eagles were competitive!… Well, for half a game anyway…
I’ve always thought the emergency system as it stands is stupid. How can you have 3 emergencies covering 4 positions?
I think you shouldn’t have set emergencies – I think if a player on your ground scores a zero, then the highest scoring bench player in that position acts as emergency automatically. That way if you have good bench cover, you’re rewarded.
As it stands, even with a full playing bench, you’re still at risk of a zero if a) 2 players from one position are late withdrawals (e.g. Enright and Kennelly last weekend), or b) a ruckman is a late withdrawal (e.g. Paddy Ryder round 21) and you have your 3 emergencies set in other positions.
Maybe they could make it more like EPL (virtual sports) where all your bench player score counts at 50%. DT could use this for 4 nominated players on your bench. This would bring it in line with the real game where your bench does actully take to the field and contribute.
I might consider playing more different players due to the extra byes next year. The byes will definitely help keep first year players fresh for the end of the year. It should also reduce the number of General Soreness complaints as teams can wait for the bye.
Older players might also benefit from the byes. Obviously Bartell played through injury for most of the year. You could watch a players form drop off, then have the bye, and jump on them afterwards as their body gets right.
Lots to think about.
Hey all
Silly question but thought someone here would know. What time is bouncedown for the GF this year? The AFL site is absolutely no help. Googling only comes up with last years start time.
Is there any good reason why this should be a secret???
Trying to organise a bucks day based around the footy!
Cheers
Usually 2:30pm – however, it has been at 2:45pm before.
2.30 pm satdy 25th. what ya got planned after that? stripper?? fruit & veg show??? can i come????
AFL today announced that GC will have the bye in round 1. This should fit well, with most teams likely to have a few bench players from the GC. You shouldn’t need them to cover in round 1, so won’t matter much that they aren’t playing.
Michael Barlow got off his crutches today!!!!!!!!!!
His coming back :)
+1 MILLION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
Why doesnt GWS just get their shit together a season early and come in the same time as GC…haha, More decent rookies to choose from and no byes. Its gonna be very strategic next year, dont know how all the young kids and newbies are gonna handle it
If you are after the league win.
5 weeks of 3 byes with no league matches – that means that at least 2 teams will play ALL league rounds and finals – could be handy to load up. It may work out more than 2 if other teams double up on the rounds with 3 byes.
Something to think about when the draw is announced.
Well maybe not ALL matches – but one more than the other anyway
To be more reflective of the nature of the AFL shouldn’t people who will be new to DT in 2011 get an extra $1,000,000 in their salary cap as per the Suns. Would even the playing field for newbies and share the love.
Hahaha, I could only imagine my team this year with that extra cash. Would be a shame you can’t upgrade gaj, swan & chappie
Some key points about the 2011 fixture.

Very interesting… if 3 of those 3 bye rounds happen early, will help with our planning. Can’t wait for the roster to come out!
should be rounds 1,2 and 3 so that they are warm up rounds just as it was this year. As reverend lovejoy’s wife says “Won’t somebody think of the dreamteamers!”
I hope Swannie Boy is under 500,000 and Jimmy under 400,000.
Wish Their could be more emergencies.
Planning on getting Mike Pyke…….. any suggestions?
How muck do you think D.Swallow will be?
Great write up.
when do prices get released?
dt is getting better and better! footy brains are going to be the winners this year!
We won’t see prices until the FEB 1 opening… unless we get to leak a few earlier! ;)
