Calvin’s Captains – Rd. 13

Last week I pumped out some good numbers in my top 10. Ablett 103 had 40% of the coaches semi happy but Montagna let down 15% of his followers for his 65. Chappy broke his perfect 100 record this year with a 99 of all scores. Baretl had 137, Goddard 120, Swan 150 and Pendlebury 136, were all amazing! Selwood 90, Stanton 73 and Thompson 27 (but injured) all we not that great – lets get int0 this Loop Hole thing!

What is The Loop Hole?

Well I’m glad you asked! With this week being a split round it means we have another partial lock out. This means that lock out will occur ‘partially’. AFL Dream Team will be in lock out over the weekend, but open again for the following week, with all the players who have already played still locked in. You can not move, replace, trade or anything with these guys, BUT you can move, and trade and change the players who have not yet played from St Kilda, Geelong, Sydney, Collingwood, Adelaide and Melbourne. When I say ‘change’ I also mean… make captain!

How Can I Make This Work?

Step 1 – Read Calvin’s Captains

Good. You’re off to a good start. Make sure you read this carefully and understand this fully. Make sure you tune in the “Thursday Night Live” with DT TALK this week, as I’ll answer all your questions for those who are a little dumb and don’t get it.

Step 2 – Stab Away

Click a “VC” on the player you want this week to have a crack at a good score for you. It must be a player from the coming weekend games. Players from either Hawthorn, Essendon, Carlton, Fremantle, Brisbane, Richmond, Kangaroos, Port, West Coast or the Bulldogs.

Step 3 – My “C” Though?

Do not appoint anyone with the “C” if they are playing in those teams above (unless you want them)!! Place your “C” on a reliable back-up who will play next week…. just to be extra safe, and then for some reason if this doesn’t work you’ll be happy! Then wait and see what your VC gets!

Step 4 – Are You Greedy?

After the split round, re-assess if you are happy with the score that the VC person got you. If you are not, simply put “C” on the person who you would like to beat that score for the following weekend. By doing this the “C” over rides the “VC” and this will replace that person. If you are happy… then keep the “VC” score like I did with Carrazzo in round 1 and put the “C” on someone who is not playing on your bench (preferably someone injured so there are no nasty late inclusions). Therefore you will get the doughnut off your captain (bench dud) which will be replaced with the score you wanted, the “VC” one!

Step 5 – Enjoy the Ride!

Laugh and enjoy the fact that you made the right call, or kick your own arse for being too greedy!

Will It Work?

Yeah it will. It did when we had our last partial lock out and this is what I did. I locked in Carrazzo for round 1 with a “VC”. He then smashed out a good 131. I was happy with this and therefore didn’t need to use anyone else for my “C” and played the round without a “C” and therefore Carrazzo had 262. If I wanted to risk it … whoever I then gave the “C” too – just needed to score anything above  131. I made the right call. But where will you draw the line of greediness?

Here I’ll cover the most likely picks you are tossing up over this week with the role of the VC. Sam Mitchell had 129 and 97 in the 2 games he played against the Bombers in 2009. He had a 59 in his last at the MCG though, but his history here looks great! Hodgey will be a huge option for many people this week with scores of 131 and 140 in his last 2 games this year. He hasn’t cracked 100+ in his last 6 against the Bombers and had 84 in his last against them in Rd. 6 this year (lowest for 2010) He did have 131 in his last game at the MCG and will be a massively picked VC this week. The Bombers have given up the most 100+ scores in the last 2 weeks this year as well, topping the list with 11. Stanton had 30d (127pts) in his last game V the Hawks and got the pig tag last week. His last previous scores here are huge with 127, 139, 147, 123, 110, 105 coming in his last 6! He has played at the MCG 5 times this year for a low score of 92. If you are one of the 14,866 coaches who have him, give him the VC now! Jobe Watson avoided the pink pig last week and averages 95 in his last 3 against the Hawkers.  He had 122 in his last against them, but that is his only 100+ score against them in his career of 8 games, but it was his highest score of 2010 despite a tag from Sewell. Bryce Gibbs plays Freo who are his favourite team of 2009 with 140 and 142 coming in those 2 games. Judd averaged 120 on them as well in 2009 too. Marc Murphy isn’t as good as the other Blue boys, but he did have a 92 and 130 in his 2 games against them last year as well. Nothing to turn your back on though! Matthew Pavlich averages 104 in the last 3 against the Blues but does only average 85 in his efforts at Etihad this year and with the efforts of the Blue’s backmen last week he might go ok. Ben Warren kicked 2g from his 17d, 8m and Lindsey Thomas had 7.5g (165pts)! Dean Cox had 119 in his last game against the Dawgs in 2009 and the Dawgs have given up 9×100+ scores in the last 2 weeks this year. Matthew Boyd averages 111 in his last 4 against the Eagles with 94 and 114 in his last 2 in 2009. He doesn’t mind SUBI either with his last 2 scores being 102 and 114.

Next Week…

We have some big guns! Goddard, Hayes, Montagna, Bartel, Ablett, Chapman and Swan all play (which sucks, cause it would have been good to have a double crack with these lads). Stay tunned, as this time next week I will cover the rest of the games, helping you to decide whether to take the “VC” score from this week or take the gamble with a “C” on one of these guys!

Have a crack, it worked before and will again, surely unless they have changed something… but they really can’t. If they have changed anything, please note you are doing this at your own risk.     I’ll be whacking the ‘V’ on Hodgey.

    Danny Hughes will be subbed onto the ground and given the ‘C’ while Didak will be shunted to the bench.

    If Hodgey scores 110+, I will leave it as it is with Didak getting an ‘E’ clicked on him, of course. If Hodgey scores less than 110, I will sub Didak onto the ground for Hughes and then probably put the ‘C’ on Swannie.

    cause will this work.

    if i have zac touy on the feild with C and mackie as my emergency, will my C be void and the VC kick in, or will the C be moved to mackie as the emergency

    im soo confused as to who to put as VC.

    I have hodgey of course. but I also have Stanton, Gibbs and Judd, and would like to be somwhat unique. Stantons previous scores look enticing, and judds average of 120 is too good to turn down as well :\

      im in the same boat… think ill end up going for judd.. just because he normally puts on a clinic in big games. Also, I’ve got ablett, so it doesn’t really worry me what either get as long as it’s above the 100 mark.

      gotta love giving a rookie player the vice-captaincy! i handed it to martin in rd one, didnt work out but the back-up is there!

      Put the C on who you would usually put the C on.

      Eg. I’m going Swan with the C, Gibbs with the VC.

      Then make sure you have a non-playing player whose team is playing in week 2 on your field, with a playing emergency set on your bench.

      THEN if you’re happy with your VC score, change the C – e.g. from Swanny to your non-player

      That way if the loophole doesn’t work for whatever reason, or you forget to check your team, etc., then you’ve got Swanny (or whoever) as your Captain, which is what you would normally have done anyway

          you don’t even need to start a non-playing rookie from the 2nd week on your field, since you can change pretty much everything for those 2nd week players, if you are happy with your VC’s score, just sub on a non-playing rookie and put the (c) on him and make a playing player your emergency

      browny meant to be playing originally during week one though so in the second week you might not be able to swap the captaincy to someone else.. so you cant really swap if u dont like vice captains score.. i think?

            This confused me at first as well cos you cant put the C on a bench player. Only reading the comments I understood how to do it with the emergency.

    Let me get this clear.

    If i put the VC on Hodge this week, sub Playfair with C on for Dids with dids as emergency.
    If Hodge scores well he will take double points and Didak will count as playfair’s 0
    If Hodge scores badly, can i sub didak on for playfair and pick a new captain?
    Is this how it works?

    Hey Calvin, what about if I don’t have a non-player from the second week?

    My non-players are Maguire, Webberley, Warnock, Bass, Higgins, Brown.

    Of course, I could just put the C on one of the above, but what’s the point? I’ll get the VC score no matter what they score and can’t change.

    I don’t think I can do this. :’(

    i don’t get why everyone is already putting the (c) on a non-playing player from the 2nd week, u could just have the (c) on swan or ablett for now, and if u are happy with your VC’s score, THEN move a non playing rookie on to the field and put the (c) on him with a gun emergency….

      not many people have non scoring rookies from week 2 though.. because you wont be able to sub on rookies who played or meant to have played in the first week.

    i’m thinking of trading out bob warnock to a shit 77k rookie like seamus mcnamara, free up 80k and allow me to have stanton as VC. having said that, i can feel my arsehole tighten with the knowledge that it means blowing another trade,especially since i’ll be sweating on brown, higgins and hille to come back within the time frames they’re listed as on the injuries list

        probably not on its own, but since my only downgradable players are guys like gary rohan, webberly, sheppard, the amazing ben griffiths, ports trengove, gysberts, mitch banner or warnock, i need to free up some cash somewhere, and he looks like the only one there (other than trengove) who has peaked or is close. its looking like there will be very few fresh faced youngsters in the latter rounds, so either way the bench will give donuts up. being 7th in my league doesn’t give much scope for copping zeros too

          I see you point mate.. If you need the coin to up to a gun to complete your team then its worthwhile considering the trade.. Keep an eye on the teams as Warnock is in contention for a spot this round.. If your trying to get top of your league then you need to do something sooner rather than later.. Also worth mentioning though is that Weagles may bring in some fresh meat soon like Stijk and Stevens but might not be until after the break…

    This is so annoying – my only bench player who’s up for a game is the second half is Phil Davis, and he may very well play. Which means that if he’s listed as playing I’ll have to override the VC with someone like Pendlebury or ROK, even if my VC has ripped it up. Guess I’ll just treat it like a normal week, but I wont have Calvin’s Captains advice on some of the matches to help me out :-(

      Swamp dragon, you dont have any of Swan, Ablett, Montagna, Goddard, Dal santo, Bartel, Selwood or Chapman?? and your best player from all the teams in week two is Pendlebury or Rok? Wow.

      Pick your VC from a week one player, C on a week two gun (surely you have one of them???). If davis isnt playing you can potentially use the loop hole if you want to, if he plays you have to stick with your week two gun.

    Have to put the C on McNeil as he’s my only non scoring player in week 2. Will put the VC on someone unique that i think can get a high score. No use putting it in Hodge cause most people will, even if he does do good, you’ll still have an ablett or swan or bartel to try to beat them. Personally maybe Buddy vs Dons, or maybe a Luke Power or Barlow.

    Next week IF hodges score is awesome

    Make Henry Playfair (hopefully not playing) (only player from those 6 teams not playing)
    and take hodges score as captain

    If hodges score is crap
    decide if ablet or swan will score better and make them captain

    Is that what i do and will playfair play?

      not necessarily. blokes like de boer and van berlo are getting looked at consistently, and who’s ever heard of them? fyfe is doing a decent job for freo, as long as his numbers stay high he should keep getting picked. mark harvey seems keen to clean out a few of the old crabs like schammer and dodd, i wouldn’t be surprised if dick headland gets placed on that scrap pile soon too.

    Why cant you just not put a captain (and therefore it would have to go to your vice)?

      you can’t just not put a captain unfortunately. you could have done that for round 1 but now. a captain must be selected.

    Why is everyone moving their non playing player onto the ground this week and putting the “C” on them? Why wouldn’t you just pick your VC this week and leave your “C” on someone who you would possibly want to have the C on for the second week (in my case Swan).

    Then if all goes to plan and your VC guns it you can move your C around in the second week, you just put your non-playing player onto the ground and plonk the “C” on them.

    Don’t see the need to put the non-player on the ground this week.

    Then if for some strange reason (not expected) you can’t change the C in week two then you’ve still got a decent Captain selected.

      a forward line consists of
      betts, hall, gia, okeefe, fev, jack riewolt, fyfe, (brown and PLAYFAIR)

      now if i were to put my captain as say… Okeefe (not that i would) and next week found out that my VC (betts scored 200) i no ill make my captain playfair who wont play ill just sub him on for uhh oh WHO???
      umm i no ill sub off captain okeefe for playfair BUT okeefe is capable of 100 points

      So this week instead ill just put fyfe off and playfair on.

      I think they are moving non playing players on ground because maybe all of there playing players play in the first 5 games as in if you wanted Campbell Heath captain and your backline was Hodge, Scotland, Carazzo, Duffield , Nason, Harbrow, and Hurn they will become unmovable by the end of partial lockout, but if they put emergence on them now then the captain glich will still work. if this isnt the reason then there dumb!

    I have been set to do this loop hole as it worked really well last time with Carrots,

    Now that i look through my team to see who will be VC, and who i can give the C, incase the VC doesnt play well, my options to, give either normally are, Stanton, Boyd, Gibbs, Selwood, Mitchell, Hodge, Goddard.

    Out of them Goddard and Selwood can be the C for the second week, and i dont trust, a player agaisnt Geelong even if it is Goddard, and Selwood hasnt exactly set the world on fire.

    Looks like im not going to try the loophole unfortunatly. Gibbs, Boyd and Stanton for C,

    Now to choose which….

    Righteo – ha ha firstly we do get some dumb people in this site who ask questions without actually reading what is written… a few good points I’d like to cover though

    1. You can really do this is you do not have an option to put the “C” on. If all your bench play, you are doing your captain as normal.
    2. I’ll be giving the VC to a Hodge and then a C to Swannie or Bartel or Hayes. THEN if something goes wrong (which it wont) but also to cover my arse if I cant find a bench zero from a team that is playing in the 2nd week.
    3. DO NOT DO NOT put a “C” on a bench player who is playing this week. Got it? DO NOT unless you are playing me in a league match this week

    Also… tune into DT TALK 2mrw night and we’ll be chatting and covering more on this so save ya BIG questions to that… but read the bloody article first…. arggg

    I am looking at Hodge, Franklin, Waters, Barlow and Brennan (under consideration trade for Brown)

    Hodge – obvious choice

    Franklin – will he score well against inspector gadget (Fletcher) and/or Myer

    Brennan – they ARE playing Richmond at the Gabba

    Waters – 121 last week against Richmond and 155 the week before against Geelong

    Barlow – 50/50 because chances are Gibbs will tag him so either Gibbs will have a ripper of a game or Barlow

    The really unique and stupid choice would be Hargrave for the “VC” – I am insanely hopeful that he would turn good rather believing he will turn good this week.

      Lets say I decide to put the V on Franklin. I will give the C to GAJ.

      I have to put Cox on the bench (naming him as an Emergency just to be sure)

      Put Seamus McNamara on the ground

      IF Franklin kicks 10 goals and does not give away an FA then I will put the C on Seamus after this Rd

      Sounds good in theory

    I don’t understand why everyone is talking about non playing players from week 2 of the split round . Can’t you just put the C on ANYONE from the second week and change them if you like the VC’s score?

    The way I see it, this wont work if you don’t have a nonplaying player from the second week to change the C to – sure I get that – but I would have thought it wouldn’t matter what you do in the first week with your C as long as he isn’t playing week one, therefore, is moving players onto the ground in the first week who wont be playing a waste of time?

      No mate, not quite right. The bloke i will have to use to do the loophole is McNamara in the ruck, so MUST put him on the ground this week and Clark or Sandi to the bench as emergency.
      Will be leaving the C on Swan at this stage though.

    im thinking of Stanton captain (i cant do the llphole), his scores are too tempting against the hawks plus all my geelong and saints players are too risky IMO. I think Bartel might go alrite, im guessing Jones will go to Ablett so bartel will see more of it. But we wont know about week 2 of calvins captains until next wednesday i think? so there form will be unknown going into lockout
