Chop’s Chopping Block: Round 8

I have to put my hand clearly and as high in the air as I can and admit that I saw very little football on the weekend. As a lot of weekend was spent in a drunken haze or a hungover state that I wouldn’t even wish upon Ben Warren. I can read numbers though, so I have gone through these numbers as well as quizzing my esteemed colleagues and come up with a list if under performers for round 8.

Heath Shaw– All on board the Heath Shaw roller coaster the ride that promises to be a thrill but without doubt could bring that hot dog from the bile in your stomach only to leave you standing their with a terrible taste in your mouth and a burning sensation in the back of your throat. This man who runs around like it is illegal to take strides over a metre in length could only manage to score 50 points against the Dockers on Friday night. 50 from a player who is considered a premium back is simply not good enough. A repeat of this pitiful performance will almost certainly result in this guy dropping further in price.

Jack Trengove – There comes a time in everyone’s year when they need to cut players from their list that have performed. Jack has done his job and after scoring 50 on the weekend his break-even is now in the 70′s. Does this mean that he has reached his peak? Maybe not, but the money to be made from Jack Sprat could be slow and annoying. Is it time to diwn-grade this guy to another rookie and make a “mid-ranger” into a gun. I’m sorry Jack but it is time to go, thankyou for the money that you have made us, but the tribe has spoken.

Kurt Can’t Quite Tippet-Kurt Tippet would have to be the biggest let down since I found out that Milli Vanilli didn’t really sing “Blame it on the Rain”. Week in and week out he has let down his coaches and this week he racked up a huge 6 kicks and 9 hit-outs. I know I have chopped this guy before and I will probably chop him again before the year is out. But if you keep on being rubbish Kurt, we will keep kicking you to the curb.

Mark McVeigh- Mark, Mark, Mark…. what were you thinking? I did not watch this game at all but I am pretty sure that he only scored 22 points, he had the job on Milne and playing on that guy would be without an extremely off putting experience. Unless you are injured or abducted by some African Pirates at half time then you should definitely score more than 22. Calvin is a very average basketballer and can still score 22 points in a 40 minute game. Mark McVeigh, you can use any excuses that you like but I’m sorry…. Not good enough!!!!!

    Sure Shaw gave me some grief. What about Brown. He has gone to Adelaide with Fev to sort out their groin complaints. (source – Garry Lyon show on Channel 9) Will he(they) play? How long will they be out for? This is going to stuff up my forward line yet again.

    about 4 weeks ago i traded mcveigh for trengrove
    i traded tippet out at the start of the year
    and i have always had shaw

    not so mad about trengrove i was expecting a bad game (he seems to never have 2 good games in a row)
    so i benched him

    shaw is sorta simular never 2 games in a row hopefully he will play better this week

      well she will be laughing at haters all the way to the bank! reportedly getting offered 250k just to have photos taken of her at her 17th birthday… which she denied. Gonna be a lot of money thrown at her for not getting a world record.. not to bad in my opinion. Although I’d have rathered watch a footy program than her arrival on all the stations.

    Interested to get some thoughts on who to chop (if anyone):

    I have both Nason and Hunt on my backline bench. Both are about 220-230K and BE of 40s (I think).
    Should I downgrade one this week (to Webberley?)? If so which one?
    Both should make their BE but there doesn’t look to be many more back rookies for downgrades in the next couple of weeks.
    Who of those two has better JS?

    Who to chop at this stage? Dangerfield, Duncan or Gumbleton? My thoughts are Duncan is likely to score the most but isn’t an automatic selection. Dangerfield will spend more time around the clearances as Douglas, Porplyzia, Tippett and Walker are forced to take responsibility for the goals. Gumby will continue to improve and is guaranteed a start.

    From a DT perspective, Shaw the most peeved with – I can see one of his dud scores resulting in my exit from Eliminator at some stage (Trengrove a close second).

    Unfortuantely I am stuck with both until I get my flatlining FWD line (which has about 4 worthy chops) of its death bed.

    From an overall perspective though, definitely the media coverage on Watson. The anger I had when i was switching TV channels only to see a frigging pink boat on just about every channel was impressive. And it escalated everytime I checked the TV again only to be hit with ‘delay’ ‘delay’ ‘delay’.

    Surprised that little fag Justin Bieber hasn’t appeared on the polls yet.

    Firstly i dont pick him because i think his injury prone.
    Then he dominates 2 games and Roo goes down which opens the door to buy him.

    I have two options this week I am flirting with (will wait for teams obvioously as no doubt one of the Cats will be struck down by ‘general soreness’ and ruin all my plans) but here is my thoughts so far:

    Martin > Carrazo
    then swap carrazo to back line for Ladson
    Ladson > Armstrong?

    OR

    Martin > Didak
    Ladson > Webberley

    I like these players as they are DualPos and gives me some flexibility for covering injuries down the track

    I actually have good cover in all positions at the moment (only Pods/R Warnock/Ladson of my bench players were out last week) so could hold off but I think it is time to go Ladson and the Martin upgrade is about getting my best team in as early as possible.

    Thoughts?

          I was laughing at the guys the other day, getting Tippet and Lobbe etc, just to find out that they turned out to be a waste of time, dual position idea isnt really worth it in my opinion, although I havent tried it yet. Has anyone seen it useful this year?

            yeah it was usefull for me to play against people who had tippet so they could move him into the ruck if they needed to.

            I don’t really get the DPP stuff.

            I mean, if you have say a FWD/DEF who is currently in your backline, then to get him into your FWD line don’t you also need another FWD/DEF already in your FWD line to fill that other persons posi in the BAC line…so aren’t you just swapping them around?????

            Only use I can see is to get a DPP that includes a MID (assuming he will play heaps in the mid and get great scores) then stick them in you FWD or BAC line.

            Yes, but say you have bench players in your defense but not in your forward line? Then you can swap a non-playing Fwd/Def for a playing Def/Fwd and swap the bench player onto the field. Gives you much more flexibility.

            Crimson, yeah i thought of that, but if you’re gonna perhaps bench one of ‘em anyway why would you bring him in in the first place.

            I guess the benching stuff might be useful is they got injured or suspended though.

            Not convinced they are useful enough to justify other than if one of their posis is a Mid.

            Maybe the DTtalk guys can prepare a 1,000 page detailed report on DPPs in time for the start of next season :-)

          Completely disagree. DP is wonderful and if used right it can save you. Like it has done with my team already. Mitch Duncans DP has saved me a zero twice now as i was able to put him in the middle on the bench with PODS and Brennan and Medhurst out.

      mw that is a good way to use it ,for trading people out.its not just about swapping positions.
      getting carrazzo in and ladson out in 2 trades is a no brainer,id do it now.

      Keep Hunt and Gumby on your bench all year. The perfect injury cover, should it happen. Ideally, you shouldnt have to touch them at all! I’d go Nason>Carrazzo and Balla>Pav, silvagni may earn you some more money with freo’s injuries.

    Dual Pos isn’t really necessary, often its only by pure chance sometimes you can switch players around and cover a donut. But to structure your team around this principle is not smart. Mids should be mids as they score exceedingly well and any variation from that can bite you in the ass….

    However saying that having a FWD/DEF dual position would be the most useful of them all…

    @MW – I would make the second trade option if I had to choose one.

      DPP would add something to the game if there were more players who could switch positions. Unfortunately it is too limited at the moment. Saying that I did use it a few times to switch Dangerfield and Brennan around to get the best possible scores on the ground.

    this round im completing my mids for the time being.
    My current mids are:
    Bartel, Stanton, Selwood, Swan, Barlow, Trengove (Howlett/Shuey)

    I have a few questions, so if you could copy and paste them in a reply with some answers I’d very much appreciate it!!

    1) I can get any mid to replace trengove. Is it worth getting Ablett? I am not worried about the cash, I have plenty to be milked in the next few weeks and my team is near completion.
    2) Is it worth spending the extra 100k compared to a Montagna/Boyd/Hayes or even Judd? I have never owned ablett before and having hated him for so long, its made me unsure.. especially with his restings and injury record.
    3) Is 3 geelong mids too many for one team?
    4) What are peoples opinions on Abletts durability for the rest of the season? (I know this is a sketchy question, but just after opinions)

      How much cash will you need to have your ideal team, and how many trades do you have left. If you can get the team you want and have enough for ablett why not…. and if you have enough trades you can always swap him.

      2) Is it worth spending the extra 100k compared to a Montagna/Boyd/Hayes or even Judd? I have never owned ablett before and having hated him for so long, its made me unsure.. especially with his restings and injury record.
      I have boyd and would consider Montagna… the other two are not consistent enough to be value against Gablett. If i had the cash to get Ablett I would, but only if it meant I could still have a decent team in the backs and fwds

      3) Is 3 geelong mids too many for one team? nope…. they help each other to score high

      4) What are peoples opinions on Abletts durability for the rest of the season? (I know this is a sketchy question, but just after opinions).

      I think he will be fairly injury free…. its the resting you have to worry about… they have the depth to rest players that no other team could afford to rest. Take Brisbane for instance… brown and fev should be rested but wont. If it stays a tight race for the top eight then geelong may rest less players.

        yeah good points! this year is alot more competitive than geelongs premiership years, they may be less resting down the stretch.
        Yeah I have enough depth in my Fowards and backs, perhaps an upgrade down the line in each to turn and 80 into a 100, but my mids are my focus atm.
        after the ablett trade and one fwd and backline trade i should still have 6/7 for injuries or further upgrades down the stretch. Thanks for the advice.. Im sold, now just have to wait until friday!

      No, they are the benchmark side and have the best midfield in the comp

      I am afraid he might get rested at some point during the year, make sure you have a cover on your bench

      I’ve been thinking the same thing…is it worth getting Ablett at this stage? His last three weeks – rested, 160+, played the majority of the game in the forward line (according to reports) and scored 100. Its hard not to read between the lines a bit. What effect is the Gold Coast speculation having on Bomber Thompson’s mindset about him and what effect will it continue to have in the context of Selwood’s contract extension?

      In the end, his brilliance has pushed me out of the market (it was a mistake not to get him originally). I’m saving $100k and trading for Hayes and spending the $50k on each of two high end premium defs and forwards. (Appreciate not in template form but wanted to offer a different angle).

    Why not save the money and get Lenny Hayes? He seams to be getting back to his best, good time to get on him now before he rises in price too much and gets out of reach. think I replied to this in the round review column.

      yeah, thanks. I know hayes is getting back to his best. but with my mids being Swan, Stanton, Bartel, Selwood Barlow and (possibly ablett) and two cash cows on the bench in Howlett and Shuey. I only need one more to be my 6th mid. Even if hayes steps up and averages 115 for the year, i’d be better off with ablett’s 120.. Unless he gets rested.. ill take the risk.

    Thanks for the advice above. Now thinking instead I might go dual downgrade and stick with the team that got me 2207 this week (plus Pods to come back in for Gumby):

    Ladson > Webberley
    Gumby>Hughes

    This leaves me with Hunt/Webberley as back bench and Davis/Hughes fwd bench

    Then I can go bang next week and finish off my mids and backs by upgrading Martin/Nason to pretty much anyone (Stanton and Gilbee should drop nicely by next week) and I could even have some cash left to upgrade one of my 80ish players into a 90ish player as well down the track.

      I’ve got Gibbs and Ablett.

      If I didn’t I’d say go Gibbs if I was sure Ratten would stop stuffing his DT scores up by playing him 1 or 2 qtrs in the backline. Hoping Ratten learnt his lesson against Port…soon as Gibbs was moved out of the backline back into the mid, he (and Carlton) gunned it.

            Trust me I’m doing shite, but I was surprised how many didn’t start initially with Ablett!
            For me, Barlow.(a potential keeper on preseason form)@$101,000 made it easy for me!
            Figured spending $600,000 for 2 premium keepers sealed it for me!
            Sure, Barlow has far exceeded, I think, everybodies expectations.
            As long as Ball can keep notching up those tons, really happy with my 8 mids, & when I say 8 I mean,
            Ablett,Swan,Barlow,Bartel,Hayes,Ball,Sandi & Cox!!! 

            Ash Hansen is demanding selection after his third consecutive seven-goal haul in the WAFL. He has booted 26 goals in his last four games for Swan Districts and will be considered to face St Kilda, along with Brett Jones (arm) and Luke Shuey (knee), who have recovered from injury. Sam Butler has played two games with Perth after suffering a facial fracture, while Andrew Embley should return after serving a two-game suspension

            dont know if that helps but it sounds promising….

        According AFL website article, Schuey is ‘set to return:

        “Brett Jones (arm), Luke Shuey (knee) and Sam Butler (facial fracture) are ready to return, while Andrew Embley has served his two-match suspension for a forceful front-on bump on Fremantle midfielder Rhys Palmer. ”

        Whether that means return to AFL team or the second though, guess people that have him will have to wait till teams are announced.

            i thought he would be back. by all reports, and personal conversatoins with people in the know, they love him down there. he has hard a hard run with injury and personal issues.. but he has shown his worth in the side. he’d replace stevenson half the hacks inthat team. And I support them.

            pretty sure shuey just had a bruised bone, but was to the stage he couldnt run on it

            im not sure whether hes played wafl yet but his current injury isnt very bad
            just got bruised when fell on by Petrie in the north game

    Hey Guys,

    my current team is:

    backs: hodge, enright, goddard, carrazzo, shaw, maguire, kennelly
    emg: silvagni & webberley

    mids: swan, bartel, gibbs, barlow, ball and martin
    emg: howlett and shuey

    rucks: sandi and hille

    forwards: harvey, rok, brown, gia, pods, gray and ziebell
    emg: hitchcock and p.davis

    iv already downgraded farmer on my bench to webberley, leaving me with one trade left this round. Now, initially ziebell was the first to go in my fwd line but with anthony going down and jayz ripping out a 94 last week, and with a b/e of 38 for this week, i reckon ill hold onto him 4 a couple more weeks. So i was thinking put the 130,000 i got in the kitty on top of gray (who i hoped would be a keeper and still might be but just hasnt shown anything yet) and turn him into pavlich.

    But, then i thought what if i turn martin into goodes, then swap goodes with ziebell and put jayz in the midfield. I know goodes has been average by his standards (although he is averaging 90) this year but as we all know he plays his best football in the second half of the year. With pavlich at his maximum price this means i can wait a few weeks, giving gray the opportunity to either prove his worth or when pavlich comes down a bit later on turn gray into pavlich.

      Don’t log into dreamteam till Friday!
      Have your team on paper or whatever, & use ffgenie etc, but don’t trade if you can, till after final teams are announced on Friday!
      I’d go PAV!
      Sandi at the SCG vs no ruck, he’ll punch the ball at the centre bounce to the goalsquare lol
      reckon Pav in improved freo side will score 10-15pts more than Goodes! imo ofcourse

    im worried that my forwards do not have enough job security tho. it leaves me with my forwards as
    gianseracusa, pavlich, higgins, j brown, ryan o keefe, pods, mitch duncan emg rockliff and hughes

    This means that for the next couple of weeks before i upgrade mitch duncanto didak, i need 2 out of pods, duncan, rockliff and hughes to play every week to avoid donuts.

    im pretty confident pods will play every week from now. i rekon hughes is good for the next 5 or so games. but whats everyones thoughts on mitch duncan and rockliff…. any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

          I used to think rockliffs job security was good, until he strung 3 mediocre games together. If he gets selected this week and plays well, i can see him staying. I think he is now back on performance based efforts. Mind you, brisbane have lost the last four, and perhaps when they win again, his scores will also benefit.

    Thoughts on keeping Brennan? I’m thinking about doing it. Voss said minimum of 3 weeks last week. I’d say he woudl be out for another 3 (don’t pay any attention to injury lists, complete bull shit), can’t see any point in getitng him out. They will need him back asap.

    Trengrove is very much on off one week good one week bad many of his games are 50s and 60s while hes played a few decent games 83, 91, 108
    he should play well this week well hopefully afterlast weeks bad preformance
    im probly not going to trade him my midfeild is pretty good and i have allredy used 11 trades

        Im not convinced on this duel positioning. My league ranking is 31 which involves relegation so everybody treats it life and death. Now all the blokes using duel positioning are bottom 4… no joke!

        I think that you loose the points power of the Premium mids like ablett and swan and montanga & co. if you waste a spot or 2 on duel position players!

          Everyone seems convinced that Didak will avergae more than Dal Santo anyway so it really makes no difference. I’ve got til Firday so there’s no rush, I’ve alreayd made some shocker upgrades so far (picking Stanton instead of Swan for example, Brown instead of Pav) so want to get this one right.

          As for Deledio, that’s a big punt when you could pay 20k more and get someone like Joel Selwood/Gibbs. Could get you an upper hand on your opponents, but I certainly be prepared to get him.

    I don’t have Tippett but he has to go. I have Shaw but he’s not getting too much ball because the tag that Lockyer used to get is now on him and the likes of Sidebottom is getting more ball. I consider him a keeper so I’ll sit on him for another couple of games. The other interesting one that has lost $151K in value is Neon Leon. I have Bastinac at $266K who averages 68. Leon at $285K is sitting on about 66. I think there’s some big upside to Leon at this price. Even if he continue to average 66, he’ll have some big spikes for you in scores which might be enough to get you an Eliminator win. Not a bad risk.

      Assuming Leon doesn’t get dropped from the team! As a Pies fan, I am worried about his form and fitness, and the amount of young guns we have in the seconds knocking on the door.

      If all fit, Wellingham is sure to come back, and Brad Dick probably to..and Medhurst as well. So who gets dropped? Leon and Macaffer my tips. Maybe Leon will get a couple more lifelines…but if he doesnt pull off a pearler soon then he could get the flick. Malty has shown he’s willing to drop experience (O’Bree, Lockyer, Leroy Brown, Jack Anthony etc)…so why not Leon.

      Hargrave sucked alot of people in (Almost me) with his low BE and price tag…but form does not lie. A lesson I’ll be taking into Dreamteam next year given a few horror trades Ive made thinking players would bounce back.

      If you have another 115 avg captaincy choice like Ablett or Chappy then I’d consider Judd instead of Swan… Swan is such a good pickup for those massive captaincy scores of 130+

      If you need further convincing just look at how he scored in the last half of 2009 – its ridiculous!!

      Scully bound to have another big price rise after this round as BE is only 13.

      Trengrove on the other hand has a BE of 72. So will drop in price if misses, and even if beats, will not rise by much unless he really canes it.

      Of course wait till you see teams confirmed…but both will surely play (unless melb decides it to wants part of this bullsyt resting policy).

      Shame I’ve got Trengrove.

    Thoughts on keeping Brennan versus trading him to Didak next week?

    By next week I’ll only have 7 trades left (doing 2 downgrades this week), so that next week I can potentially get Didak in for Brennan and Montagna in for Martin. Leaving me with 5 trades but a completely locked team, apart from maybe Waters.

    So the big question is, do I hold Brennan or trade to Dids.. who will better long term?

        Yeah a few poor decisions at the start of the year has meant doing more trades than necessary to get where I wanted to be.. ie,. Mitch Clark (then inevitably Seaby), Hall, Warren, Roberts (instead of Pods after round 1 teams :S)

        My covers will be Webberley, PDavis, Howlett, Shuey, Warnock, McNamara, Hughes, Rockliff.

        I really wanted to keep Gumby for cover but I need to trade him to Hughes this week in order to have enough cash for both Didak and Montagna next week, so its risky but will pay off I think. Cover is not perfect but I think its just enough to get me through

          risky. just make sure you realise your trade mistakes for the rest of the year. you cannot afford to sell your rookies before they peak. at the moment i wouldnt plan your trades too much. id wait for your rookies to peak and see whats available..

          I kept mitch clarke for now, he is the least of my worries. keeping to the fundamentals of dt, can save you worry towards the tail end of the season. Sell your rookies when they peak, even if its different weeks and then see what you can upgrade to. I wouldn’t do anything other than that to maximise your options given your situation.

            cheers for the advice… yeah i’ve been timing my trades according to breakevens etc… so almost all of them (except maybe maguire to hargrave a few weeks ago) have worked out for the better and have been spot on. after next week tho im not letting myself trade at all.. unless its an LTI to a premium, cos im sitting at 4-1 in my league and will easily make finals.. so i plan on keeping the 5 trades until then.. not that i should need them for anything but injuries/possible waters upgrade tho.
