Clearly Michael Barlow loves a challenge. The week after Melbourne midfielder Tom Scully racked up a rookie-record 134 points, the lanky Freo first-year player responded immediately by setting the bar higher again with an Ablettesque 146. Hey Barlow, I bet you can’t bust out a 150. That should do the trick.

It’s a pretty key week in rookie trading this one, with a bunch of our initial pick-ups hitting their peak and some interesting two-gamers making their case for selection in our sides. Firstly, the ones that have been around for a while.

Three-or-more gamers

Obviously Barlow’s still got some growth left after that monster score, as does Scully with that 134 still in his system. The other “good guys” of round eight were Adelaide backman Chris Schmidt, who brought up his maiden ton, and Matts Maguire and Jaensch, who both nailed 90s. The warm feeling generated by Jaensch’s breakout performance quickly dissipated when it was revealed he’ll miss this week after hanging with former DT starlet Bernie Vince into the early hours. There were 80s too for West Coast midfielder Lewis Stevenson, Western Bulldogs forward Jarrad Grant and Hawthorn forward Carl Petersen. Grant owners will be happy with the score, but even happier with the news that veteran teammates Brad Johnson and Robert Murphy remain injured, guaranteeing Grant’s spot for some time to come. Petersen has shown it’s possible to climb out of the red zone, stringing together a couple of good scores to knock his price up and his breakeven back down to a more-than-manageable 6. Hopefully it’s an example the next lot of blokes can follow.

Sydney midfielder Lewis Jetta suffered an $8k loss last week, taking a BE of 47 into the next round. He wasn’t the only one leaking cash, however, with Melbourne’s No.2 pick Jack Trengove slipping $6k and mini drops for Carlton’s Kane Lucas and Hawthorn’s Ben Stratton. Not major losses, then, but it’s clear that it’s time to offload this lot. Brisbane’s Todd Banfield takes the highest BE into round nine, needing 84 to breakeven. He’s averaging 65 on the season. You can probably sell the likes of Scott Gumbleton, Mitch Farmer, Dustin Martin, Anthony Morabito, Ryan Bastinac and Ben Nason without sacrificing too many future price rises as well. While I’m hanging on to Gumby as a forward bench heartbeat, and Farmer simply hasn’t made enough dough to be worth the trade, I’d be looking at cashing in the other cows sooner rather than later. According to the comments on the last couple of posts, Nason in particular is going to figure in a few trades this week.

Two gamers

Unless you’ve already got him, Nason’s Richmond teammate Jeromey Webberley seems to be the popular target of a backline downgrade trade this week, and with good reason. While failing to score heavily yet, Webberley has done enough on field to impress the Tiger faithful that he’s worth persisting with. The other pros are his “mature-aged-ness” and the fact that he plays for a team more interested in developing their list than gifting games to the old blokes. If you’re cashing in Nason (or Hunt/Maguire, etc), then your other option is West Coast’s Brad Sheppard, who wouldn’t be the worst pick-up in the history of DT, but you’ll pay an extra $40k for lower job security and, arguably, a lower points-per-game average, too.

Melbourne forward Danny Hughes is another two gamer tempting coaches this week. Scoring doesn’t seem too much of a problem, with above par scores of 63 and 74 so far. The loss of Ricky Petterd has convinced many that his job security is good too, although I’m still wary of what impact the impending return of Cale Morton and Austin Wonaeamirri will have. As a Dees supporter, I will at least say that I’m glad someone is getting a go ahead of serial failure Brad Miller. The other forward downgrade option this week is Sydney’s Gary Rohan. Many of the same arguments for Webberley over Sheppard can be made for Hughes over Rohan, so I won’t repeat myself. The big bonus in Rohan’s favour is his dual-position status (he’s available in the mids, too), giving his owners some flexibility if short-term injury or omission strikes down the track.

The final two gamer up for grabs this week is Tony Armstrong, who would’ve made plenty of coaches take note with a monster 123 for Adelaide. The midfielder’s first game, back in round one, yielded just 36, so there’s a massive discrepancy between his best and worst. His best is pretty good though.

One gamers

Five rookie-priced footballers played their first games of 2010 last week, although most of them have AFL experience and, as a result, come at a slightly higher cost than the average first-year player. None of them did anything particularly special on debut, but for the record they were forwards Henry Playfair (62), Jack Watts (53), Nick Heyne (40) and Cameron Stokes (28), and ruckman Wayde Skipper (37). I’d still be grabbing Hughes if you thought one of your forward rookies was close to hitting their peak instead of waiting for around for one of these blokes.

  also, kane lucas was off the ground after 1 possession in the first quarter last weekend. He suffered a hamstring tightness of sorts that ended his day, Iw ouldn’t yet think about trading him as he was rising quite nicely and I think will continue to do so for a few more games at least, when he plays.

I think Sheppard actually has decent job security, but not worth the extra 40k Webberley brings in. Would trade in Webberley but my bench is Maguire/Hams and im pretty set on keeping Maguire for the season as backup whilst Hams isnt worth the trade.

Armstrong may be this years Beau Muston, i could get him for Duncan but I dont really need to so i likely wont.

And damn Jaensch for getting suspended, he’s f**ked his chance and i was hoping to make some decent cash out of him, he’s probably going to have to do something special in the sanfl to get anohter game…

Danny Hughes (good aussie name… up there with Garry Rohan) has made the Warne Dawgs already and scored well on debut. Will be looking at cashing in Nason. And might be tempted into upgrading Trengove this week. Hmmm. Trades are running out though! Will be banking on some dudes who aren’t as awesome as what they could be to play out the season in 7th forward position.

Oh, and thanks for the game last week! MGA were unlucky!

my midfield i have jetta bastinac and martin. should i downgrade to armstrong?? and which one?

my back line i have m.maguire, malceski, davis, slivagni and farmer. should i downgrade one of them?? and to who??

my fowd line i got pods, gumby, ziebell (who got 94 last week) and hitchcock?? what should i do??

  Armstrong won’t get good scores consistently. I would expect more like the 35 he scored in the first game. Maybe not that low but definitely not 100s. He was loose in the backline and we mucked around with it a fair bit. Just one of those games with players behind the ball.

  not bad reasoning.. but shaw does tend to pull out some whopper scores, more so than maguire will. i’d be sticking with shaw unless u have a fair few trades left and/or are going to use the 100k to upgrade a mid or something. shaw is one of the players ive personally banned myself from picking at all lol, hes just too frustrating.. cant escape a tag to save his life!!

Whats a better option.

Nason to Webberley and Gumby to Hughes this week. That should pocket me around $300k to make my assault for next weeks trades where i can upgrade bastinac to swan and then have around 50k left. The problem is im in a crucial league game and doing this wont change my sider for the better (yet).

Or do i trade nason to webberley and then upgrade gumby to o’keefe who is very low (but will probably drop a few more dollars this week). The thing with that is that i strengthen my side for this weeks clash but I lose some money and worst of miss out on the danny hughes window.

With 34k left over.

But then my only worry would be that I have Howlett and JKT on my midfield bench.
Is that okay?? I was hoping to do this trade in a few weeks and trade Howlett instead of Martin so Martin can be my rock on my bench.

Sorry if this isn’t directly about rookies but anyway i need help

I have a bit of a problem this week in my backline…It reads like this
FIELD: Hodge, Carrazzo, Scotland, Enright, Gram, Maguire, White
BENCH: Nason, Farmer

If Gram is out for four weeks – or at least a couple I can either trade for any back line player seeing that i hav 130k in the bank or I can put Nason on my ground hoping he can put up some decent scores, that leaves my with 3 med/rookie type players on my field!!!!! Should I trade for the likes of Goddard or Gilbert or save my trades and hope that those 3 do alright?

I have 11 trades left, and $131, 800

I can also downgrade/upgrade Bastinac, Martin, Nason, Farmer, Gumbleton, Warren(Pissing me off), Ballantyne – any help is appreciated

Would prefer Rohan for his DPP but would need to flog Duncan instead of Dangerfield which might be the best option anyway. Would prefer to axe Dangerfield personally.

In other news……Brown out, Judd in. Beware all. Brown is fooling you!! Has been for 4 rounds now. He is done! His manager must have advised him to just play it down for DT purposes. He’s not in Adelaide with Uncle Fev to attend to a day spa!

Mids – Ablett Swan Bartel Montanga Barlow (one more premium this week)

Selwood, Gibbs,Mitchell & Boyd are great options however…

Deledio will no longer be tagged because Richmond cant make finals and no one cares about them & ….

this time of the season he begins his 130 a week run to get his average back up!!!

    The best DT midfielders imo are, in order:
    1. Ablett (550k)
    2. Swan (480k)
    3. Bartel (441k)
    4. Montagna (450k)
    5. Hayes (440k)
    6. Then a blanket over JSelwood, Boyd, Stanton, Judd etc.
    
    Obviously i’m not really going against the grain these guys, they are priced the highest, and average the most—- because they are the best and most consistent!

He typifies the Paul Roos era hard at the ball, tackling and all out frustrating for other teams. Thats why I support the swans… I like there never say die hard at it footy.. makes it easier to follow them because win or loose they leave it all out on the field.

with that money, in a couple of weeks, when cash cows have ripened and premiums have fallen a bit, i guess howlett>montagna and ziebell > pavlich. the only problem with the gray to hughes is that it leaves me with hughes lol. Gray is averaging 74 and hughes a little less. do u think its a good trade?

leegend duncan to hughes and gray to chapman is the best trade you could do imo. the rest of your team looks very strong.

hav u been watchin any port games at all? i thought gray was getting runs in the midfield? why are his scores so shite?!?!!!! his last couple of scores have been frustrating after that 120 i thought he could be a keeper. i dont wanna trade him out then he starts ripping out the tons….

FWDs: Pavlich, O’Keefe, Didak, Ballantyne, Gumbleton, Pods, Dangerfield
Bench: Brennan, Rockliff

12 trades. $74k.

My trade thoughts. PS Lucas threw out all my ideas out the window with his injury.

Hunt —> Webberly (this is probably going to happen).

Trengove —> Armstrong (maybe not because Armstrong will only be used for cash and so should only sit on bench.

Banner —> Armstrong (If I do this I earn cash now but If Banner comes back then that will be a waste).

Balla —> Hughes (Again cash making, and Balla is just not a very nice DT’er because his antics distract him from getting the big points).

I am happy with Nason, and Gumby as they both probably bench cover the entire year (and Nason will score higher than Hunt). Brennan I will wait for, and Dangerfield will be used in a upgrade downgrade later in the year probably (unless he picks up).

SO, i was hoping for some feedback.
My worries are:

1. Not leaving enough trades for end of season. I got unlucky with Clark, Brennan, Kerr and Banner but as did others so will cop it on the chin.
2. Am I not concentrating on locking in lines (ie. FWDs, MIDs, DEFs). I think my backline is sorted, my FWD line stinks like that girl who just got back from sailing around the world and claimed “had not had a decent shower for a long time”?
3. Is this too long? This is. Sorry.

  I’ve got a similar sort of forward line. That particular gamble didn’t really pay off did it? Nevertheless, its pointless hoping Rockliff reverts to the 80+ player that he might have been and unless Good Old Danger produces about 75+, I’m giving him the chop. 3 premiums + Pods…hmm. I reckon give them all another week and then bundle two together for another premium at least. You’ve got plenty of trades.

    Reassurance is always good in DT.
    I am certain about the Webberly trade this week. Hunt has done his thing.
    But I rekon I will wait.
    Trengove will hopefully pull something nice.
    Lucas’s injury will be clear as to how long.
    Rockliff will get more ball with Fev or Brown out.
    
    My only worry is this Balla character.
    He is infuriating.
    Do i get him out for Hughes this week or let him sit?

      I’m trading for Hughes. I don’t have Balla so I’m no expert but you’ve seen enough of him and know enough about his pricing to know what to do. You have to downgrade someone anyway to upgrade next week.

Allredy used 11 trades 9 to go

my forward line is very bad so if you want to tell me how shit it is i allredy no

higgans, brown, betts, hall, davis, gumby, fyfe, – pods and burton

thing is burton is out for 6 weeks so should i trade him out for hughs would leave me with some cash to spend else where.

or should i be working else where i picked up davis last week for brennan
betts, hall, davis, gumby, fyfe, and burton are all pretty crap
i believe pods will come back this week and play 4 the rest of the season
is having hughs, gumby and fyfe a mistake ????

    Nason will play basically every game this year, so until you have settled everything else keep him there for safety.
    I don’t really like your Rucks as they aren’t big scorers. Look at upgrading those soon.
    
    Rockliff still has cash to burn and if Brisbane do the right thing and rest both Brown and Fev (i understand not at the same time but they should be rested, Rockliff will get more ball).
    
    All in all, sort your rucks out.
