Snapshot:
The Crows returned to West Lakes on January 4 and quickly progressed to internal trials. Coach Neil Craig has trained his players behind closed doors to help refine the team’s ball movement.

Medical room: Nathan van Berlo (back) is making slow progress, but Nathan Bock (heel), Brad Symes (knee), Brad Moran (knee) and Jason Porplyzia (pelvis) should all make an appearance in the latter NAB Cup rounds.

Who’s burning: Forward Taylor Walker, who has put on 10kg of muscle, will be hard to overlook at the selection table and Craig continues to sing the praises of midfielders Rory Sloane and Patrick Dangerfield.

NAB Cup opener: February 13 v Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.

BRISBANE LIONS
Snapshot:
The Lions have been based at Coorparoo over summer. The squad resumed on January 4 before heading to the Sunshine Coast a month later for the club’s Community Camp.

Medical room: Xavier Clarke and draftee Callum Bartlett are both on the comeback trail from knee reconstructions in 2009. Each is making good progress but won’t play in the early rounds of the season.

Who’s burning: Jamie Charman and Matthew Leuenberger are both back and raring to go in 2010. Jack Redden has added considerable bulk to his frame, too.

NAB Cup opener: February 14 v Western Bulldogs at Manuka Oval.

CARLTON
Snapshot:
Brett Ratten has praised his group for a stellar pre-season, but the campaign hit a snag when the first intra-club match was cancelled due to weather and a virus that floored several players.

Medical room: Marc Murphy and Jarrad Waite are the chief concerns but both remain on target to play round one as they work back from hip and knee operations respectively.

Who’s burning: Mark Austin has bulked up, Setanta O’hAilpin is delighted with his first uninterrupted pre-season for years, while Eddie Betts, Ryan Houlihan and Andrew Walker were whipped into shape at a boxing gym during their exile.

NAB Cup opener: February 20 v Sydney Swans at Blacktown Olympic Park.

Snapshot:
Collingwood has been based at Gosch’s Paddock since resuming. After a community camp in northern Victoria in the first week of February, the Pies played their first intra-club match on February 5.

Medical room: Brad Dick (shoulder) remains the only player likely to miss the NAB Cup. Dale Thomas (leg), Josh Fraser (knee), Jack Anthony (shoulder) and Sean Rusling (soreness) are being eased back into game time.

Who’s burning: After several impressive VFL displays last season, Jarrad Blight looks ready to take the next step. Steele Sidebottom and Dayne Beams have both added muscle while maintaining their running power.

NAB Cup opener: February 19 v St Kilda at Etihad Stadium.

Medical room: Rhys Palmer (knee) will be held back during the NAB Cup and could also miss round one of the season proper, while youngster Tim Ruffles is also returning slowly from a knee reconstruction. Recruit Adam McPhee has managed a return from upper-arm surgery since arriving at the club.

NAB Cup opener:
February 21 v Melbourne at Subiaco Oval.

NAB Cup opener: February 21 v North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.

HAWTHORN
Snapshot:
The Hawks have had a much smoother run than last year when many players were in the rehab group. With an extra month of preparation than last year, the Hawks are well-placed.

Medical room: Lance Franklin had an interrupted pre-season after foot surgery but is back training now. Max Bailey is making a steady return from his latest knee reconstruction.

Who’s burning: With Trent Croad retiring over the break, Ryan Schoenmakers is doing his best to make a key defender position his own. Indications are Luke Hodge might play across half-forward this year.

NAB Cup opener: February 13 v Richmond at Aurora Stadium.

MELBOURNE
Snapshot:
The Demons returned on January 4, switching between Junction Oval and Casey Fields. The six draft recruits have trained in an “exceptional” manner according to coach Dean Bailey.

Medical room: Sam Blease (leg) and Col Garland (foot) are progressing from serious injuries. Ruck stocks are a concern with Mark Jamar, Paul Johnson, John Meesen and Jake Spencer all having interrupted pre-seasons. Austin Wonaeamirri (hamstring) has returned to training, while Max Gawn (knee) and Matthew Bate (foot) are coming along.

Who’s burning: Reigning best-and-fairest winner Aaron Davey and runner-up Brent Moloney have had better pre-seasons than last year. Jared Rivers has also produced his best pre-season. Brad Miller and Colin Sylvia have prepared strongly.

NAB Cup opener: February 21 v Fremantle at Subiaco Oval.

NORTH MELBOURNE
Snapshot:
The Roos spent a week on the Gold Coast in mid-January. Pre-season training has otherwise been at revamped Arden Street, though Ballarat’s Eureka Stadium is hosting their intra-club matches.

Medical room: Daniel Wells (groin) may play before round one but remains the biggest concern. Lindsay Thomas (quad) and Ben Cunnington (foot) continue their rehabilitation. Andrew Swallow (groin), Liam Anthony (finger), Michael Firrito (ankle) and Leigh Adams (knee) are close to fit.

Who’s burning: Draftee Ryan Bastinac won two time trials and should figure in the early rounds. Cruize Garlett was the standout in the first scratch match while forward Ben Warren has been solid all summer.

NAB Cup opener: February 21 v Geelong at Etihad Stadium.

PORT ADELAIDE
Snapshot:
The Power returned to training on January 5 with the emphasis still on tackling and defensive pressure. The players took part in a full-scale internal trial on Saturday February 6.

Medical room: David Rodan (knee) is making rapid progress and Jason Davenport (shoulder), Cameron Cloke (shoulder) and Marlon Motlop (foot) are also on the mend. Hamish Hartlett (hamstring) will miss most of the NAB Cup.

Who’s burning: Rookie-listed forward Cameron Hitchcock is in line to fill Rodan’s spot on the senior list. Travis Boak and Robbie Gray have earned greater midfield roles and Matthew Lobbe will be given a chance in the ruck.

NAB Cup opener: February 13 v Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.

RICHMOND
Snapshot:
The Tigers have mostly trained at Craigieburn since returning on January 4, with some light skills work at their spiritual and physical home of Punt Rd.

Medical room: The two major worries are Nathan Foley (ankle operation) and Troy Simmonds (rolled ankle). Trent Cotchin’s pre-season is being managed, which means training twice a week.

Who’s burning: New midfielder (draft pick three overall) Dustin Martin is impressing already, while Dean Polo is slotting into his new forward role nicely, as is the newly rookied veteran Graham Polak.

NAB Cup opener: February 13 v Hawthorn at Aurora Stadium.

ST KILDA
Snapshot:
The Saints have completed their last pre-season at Moorabbin. Andrew Lovett’s arrival and Luke Ball’s departure have kept the Saints in the news over summer.

Medical room: There have been reports that Lenny Hayes has been set back with stress fractures in his foot. Jason Gram and Steven Baker have been nursed through the pre-season as well.

Who’s burning: There are big wraps on Irish recruit Tommy Walsh who has adjusted quicker than expected to football. He should see some NAB Cup action, as should skipper Nick Riewoldt who has enjoyed his first injury-free summer for years.

NAB Cup opener: February 19 v Collingwood at Etihad Stadium.

SYDNEY SWANS
Snapshot:
The Swans have had their earliest start to pre-season training in seven years and the fitness staff have taken full advantage. From endless laps of Centennial Park to hill repeats at the Kurnell sand dunes, the Swans are fitter than they’ve been for years.

Medical room: Craig Bolton (achilles) and Rhyce Shaw (knee) have had interrupted preparations but they have now returned to skills training. Lewis Johnston (toe), Jesse White (ankle) and Brett Meredith (quad) will miss at least the first round of the NAB Cup while Kristin Thornton (knee) is still three weeks from rejoining the main group.

Who’s burning: Tadhg Kennelly has starred in scratch matches. Shane Mumford looks set for first claim on Darren Jolly’s ruck spot, while Craig Bird, Nick Malceski and Ryan O’Keefe have excelled on the track.

NAB Cup opener: February 20 v Carlton at Blacktown Olympic Park.

WEST COAST
Snapshot:
West Coast resumed pre-season training on January 4. The sessions have shifted from Claremont Oval to Subiaco with a two-day community camp in Mandurah breaking things up.

Medical room: An abdominal strain interrupted Dean Cox’s pre-season. Tim Houlihan (foot) is training in a moon boot and faces time on the sidelines. Adam Cockie, Lewis Broome, Gerrick Weedon and Ryan Neates are being managed.

Who’s burning: A faster and stronger Chris Masten is over his groin troubles and dominated the intra-club match. Daniel Kerr is approaching career-best shape, while draftee Brad Sheppard has impressed training with the Eagles’ midfielders.

NAB Cup opener: February 12 v Essendon at Subiaco Oval.

WESTERN BULLDOGS
Snapshot:
The Dogs resumed on January 4 and have been completing a huge cross-training program that has seen them work on bikes, in the sand, the pool and the boxing ring.

Medical room: Nathan Eagleton (knee) and Will Minson (toe) should play round one. Sam Reid and Stephen Tiller (groin) are working well while Jarrod Harbrow (knee) may miss the first NAB Cup game.

Who’s burning: Liam Jones starred in the intra-club match and could debut this year, Daniel Giansiracusa looks a picture of fitness after a big pre-season and Andrejs Everitt has impressed with renewed dedication.

NAB Cup opener: February 14 v Brisbane Lions at Manuka Oval.

  1. can some one explain to me what the new rule is regarding not burning a trade when a player plays in two positions?

with line ball calls between two players that i am having trouble deciding on, should i go for the one who can play in both spots?

do you then have to have someone else in that spot who can be swapped?

i dont get it at all

    • You need to have a mid/fwd playing in your midfield, then another mid/fwd playing in your forward line to be able to swap them. Can’t have just one multiposition player. U need a pair to take advantage of the rule

  2. Basically everyone who was mentioned in the ‘who is burning’ section I have put on my watch list and see how they go in the NAB. Then a few changes may be made.

  3. Lol Gumbleton.

  4. from what was posted about a month ago in deck of DT, dangerfield was ment to be injured for a while,
has he suddenly got better and is now “burning”?

    • He had a slight medial strain in his knee. He missed 1 week of running and 2 weeks of ball work so it was only a very minor setback. He’s going to be a superstar!

  5. There is clearly somthing wrong with Hayes reports coming from everywhere although him and the club are denying it!!!!. Armitage is looking more and more like a lock

  6. Any thoughts on Giansiracusa? Didn’t do so well in 2009 compared to 2008 (I think partly due to a change in role). Will he go up or down this year?

    • i had him but swaped him for higgins hearing that higgins tore it up in the midfield at last weeks trial.

      • im also hearing higgins is going to be the shining light this year. choo choo, get on him.

      • Guys, ur obviously forgetting his injured past. You will not get more than 20 games from him. Mark my words!
Even with his price so low at the start of last year he ultimately cost me my league and $800 of my mates. As much as i love both him and chapman i think the risk does not outweigh the reward.

Get on Gia, he is flying, and doesnt have the soft tissue injuries like higgins.

    • Gia dropped in value towards the middle of last year, but then turned it around and was excellent value for a while before he was injured late in the year.
For some reason he always gets named on the extended interchange bench which kind of freaks you out a bit

  7. Taylor Walker is a bit of a gun, put on 10kg and over the break has should have a higher work rate, his price will no doubt rise this year.

    • 10Kg – did he win a years supply of KFC for his rising-star nomination – or is he on the roids – 10Kg is a huge amount if all muscle.

      • i had taylor walker last year, would get 6 one week then 100 the next. inconsistent to say the least! but having said that i didnt see many crows games last year so the variation in scores could be related to how he was used by neil craig.

10kg of muscle is impressive though will be interesting to see how he goes this year

    • hes also improved his running as well :O

  8. Hows Jack Ziebell going..????? Any thought on him.

  9. I’m loading up with Masten in the middle and Bate up forward.
Hoping this setup results in the ultimate DT climax.

  10. Backs: Enright, Hodgey, Fisher, Carazzo, H.shaw, Ladson, Moore (trengove (prt) ,Davis)

Mids: Cooney, Gibbs, Jelwood, Redden, Cotchin, Trengove (melb) (Martin, Bastinac)

Fwds: J.Brown, Pavlich, Buddy, Ziebell, Gray, Bate, Dangerfield (Tapscott, Gumbleton)

    Rucks: Kreuzer, Hille (Skipper, Lobbe)

9k left over, would REALLY appreciate some tips on improving my team, only a second
year dream teamer and would love some help from those of you who may have more
    experience and expertise

  11. Ive changed my team a bit but help would still be sick

Defence: carrazzo, Hodge, Gilbee, Ladson, Guerra, Jarred Blight, Kennelly ( Strijk, Silvagni )

Rucks: Sandilands, Kruezer ( Lobbe, Prato )

Forwards: N Riewoldt, Franklin, Rioli, Walker, Tippet, Jurrah, LeCras ( Rohan, Weston )

  12. You run out of money when ya did your forward line?

  13. Sorry i see they are not in order. Blight from the pies is a talent, but we wont see his talent in AFL circles til at least mid season.

  14. forward

    L Tapscott, T. Dennis-Lane,

$13,000 left over. Any comments would be good

    • not a bad team you’ve got there. don’t know bout having both ablett and montagna at the start of the year though, i doubt montagna will be able to match last years efforts.

    • Im not bothering with Ablett and Swan etc for at least 3-5 rounds, they would need massive scores to keep there price, but nice team though

  15. hunt or waters??!!

  16. ANY NEWS ON ANDREW RAINES??? Really counting on him to have a cracker of a year!! he has gun potential

  17. Cyril or robbie gray?

year dream teamer and would love some help from those of you who may have more

  19. masten or dangerfield? can’t split them atm, any opinions lads?

  20. Stop posting your own team ask asking “is this good?” How do you know that someone else’s opinions and ideas are better than your own?

If you keep asking others you’re going to end up with their team instead of your own one. Be original, do some research, you’ll be far happier with a cash cow that you found and chose all by yourself rather than “My mate said he’d be good”.

By all means ask questions, but just don’t post your whole team up.

  21. boys, new addition to dream team…
    http://www.afl.com.au/news/blogarticlestandard/tabid/15692/newsid/89363/default.aspx

unlimited leagues. .. we could have DT talk with everyone in it :)

  22. Josh Hunt- overrated DT player. Good player but everyone is acting like he is a star.

  23. How’s my team-

    Defenders:
Goddard, Hargrave, H Shaw, Drummond, Ellis, Kennely, Sheppard.
    Davis, S. Reid

    Midfielders:
Hayes, Selwood, Black, Ball, Sidebottom, Trengrove (Mel).
    Lucas, Yoshiura.

    Rucks:
    Kreuzer, Hille.
    Skipper, Lobbe.

    Forwards:
Riewoldt, J.Brown, Higgins, Rioli, Porplyzia, Dangerfield, Butcher (Port).
    Daw (Kang), Gumbelton.

I had Sylvia instead of Higgins but only 1,600 dollars left, so I got Higgins to get that extra money. Now I got 16,600.

    • You might want some Midfield bench players who will actually get a game this year (no games = no money to play with)

Butcher will be a KPP – will take some time to develop and may play much of this season in SANFL

Daw is still rookie listed and probably wouldn’t be promoted this year

      Time to rebuild I reckon

  24. prismall or deledio? word is theyre both killing it pre season wise, but my worry is that deledio cops the number 1 tag

  25. for 160k Josh Hunt will be excellant value. atm he is my 7th back and if he can charge an average of 60ish i will be happy. not many first year’s (who im sure some people have as their 7th back) will be able to do that.

  26. http://www.afl.com.au/news/blogarticlestandard/tabid/15692/newsid/89363/default.aspx

That’s right, you can now create a league with absolute unlimited entries, based on a points ladder system as opposed to a head to head style of restricted league.

Can one of the DT boys create this league so we can play you’s? :D

  27. @malovan, people arent hoping for other people to pick their teams for them
but its alot easier to give advice if to someone if they know their whole side
so they can give reason behind advice not just say “do this” when it could be
the wrong thing for that side, blogs are about giving advice to each other..

  28. http://footyfantasytips.blogspot.com/ u really should check out this site!!! its new and up and coming… its my friends site he is great at dream team he placed in the top 200 last year in dream team! that is not easy to do…

  29. Does anyone know how Richie Douglas is travelling??

Is he in the crows best 22??

    • Hey Anzac,

the only news I have heard about Douglas is that Craigy expects him to have a “breakout year”. That may not mean anything more than a bit of hype / confidence building.

Did you end up going into one of the cash leagues?

  30. i am tossing up between Waters and Josh Hunt at the moment for my 7th back

I have ruled out Ladson coz the talk is that he not going to be ready for round 1, I would like to have Waters for his scoring potential but am worried about injuries and I’m just not sold on Hunt!

anyone have any opinions on this?

Also I think this year is lining up to be all about the midfield mid-price improvers – anyone agree/disagree?

  31. With Stokes out and Stevey J unlikely to be fully fit, Who do you think will come into the cats 22. The only players i can think of are Djekkererererer as a small and Podsaidly if they go tall. What does everyone else think????

    • Stokes => Shannon Byrnes,Travis Varcoe, Simon Hogan,

      Steve J => MITCH DUNCAN

Mitch is ripping it up in the pre-season and the inside word is he WILL be unleashed this season

  32. That BIG leasgue guys is in the works…. not far away

  33. Its almost impossible to do a team until the NAB cup is finished.

If your someone who has already done your side what ends up happening is you end up finding all the gun rookies that are placed at $86k and they come in for your top10 draft picks which you had selected pre nab at $150k. Then with your extra $64k per rookie you upgrade another player. Doing your side now is a bit of a waste of a time.

Obviously you have your locks, that will be in your side no matter what (except for injury in the NAB). Then you sit back, enjoy the NAB and try to pick yourself a few rookie guns. Then you null over it for 2 weeks until Round1. No use stressing about it now boys.

    Just my opinion :)

  34. Anyone got any thoughts on Luke Mcpharlin this year word is hes fitter than ever but would he be worth putting in your team??
