Masten Vs Cotchin
Best thing about these guys is that they are entering their 3rd year of AFL which is usually a break out year for gun players.
Trent Cotchin
He went #2 in the National Draft in 2007 and averaged 68 last year. He is priced at $296,200 and has the skills to be much much better. The word has it that he is smoking it up in the pre-season training and unlike before… he is moving around injury free.
His 2009 season cut short due to a hip injury after round 18, but a specialised training program has helped him build toward full fitness.
“Because Trent has had some injury problems in the past, his training program is very individualised, to minimise the risk of any reoccurrence,” Richmond’s Elite Performance Manager Matthew Hornsby said. “At the moment he is injury free, and he will continue to follow his training program in the lead-up to the start of the season. He has been heavily involved in most training sessions since the pre season began late last year.”
The huge downside to Tiger Trent is that he has only played 25 games in 2 years with the Tigers and therefore is a HUGE risk as he is always carrying injuries… but will this change in 2010, and if it will surely he is a lock!
Chris Masten
If you picked Masten in 2009 like I did early in the season, your rage is most likely still roaring and even the sight of his name makes your stomach turn. He is priced at $293,900 this year which is actually lower than 2008. He averaged 67 last year and unlike Cotchin he knocked up a solid 19 games!
This year I am… sadly, and I know…. I’m interested in the lad again!
He appears set for a breakout third AFL season after emerging stronger and fitter in 2010 and ripped it up in the Eagles’ first intra-club match recently.
Groin troubles have held Masten back in his first two seasons, but the Eagles’ first pick (No.3 overall) of 2007 appeared stronger and faster.
The 20-year-old lined up on a wing for West Coast’s ‘A’ side and won a stack of possessions all over Subi. Sumich said… “’Masto’ looked sharp running away from packs, whereas over the last probably 12 months with that groin injury he hasn’t done that,” Sumich said after the match.
Masten’s performance headlined a good night for West Coast’s emerging midfield, with Daniel Kerr, Brad Ebert, Luke Shuey, Matt Priddis and Scott Selwood also enjoying positive performances. So does this concern me as the Eagles are starting to develop a stack of mid-field talent??
VERDICT - Cotchin Vs Masten
So, here we go! Which one. Personally Cotchin’s injury history can not be ignored and Masten has burnt me mega in the past! Masten is flying, but then the Eagles said that this time last year… tricking me in 2009. But both players are guns, dead set guns in the third year… third year!!!
MUST MUST MUST watch these lads over the NAB and do not ignore any positive signs.
You MUST consider both! But do not be tricked… so what’s it for??

For me it would have to be Masten because Cotchin seems to have some serious long term issues. Lets face it, there aint no ’specialised training program’ when you are out on the park and the heat is on!
I reckon masten as well. If cotchin is fully fit, he’ll probably get a tag when other teams realise how bloody good he is.
But they are both awesome picks. Masten by a bees dick for me, although to be honest they’ll both be in out and of my team 1000000 times before the season starts
Wouldn’t take Cotchin unless you absolutely love the taste of donuts.
i love donuts

Apparently Cotchin was impressive in Richmond’s scratch match with Coburg yesterday. Hardwick is still talking him up.
At this stage of the pre-season Masten is ahead of Cotchin in the fitness department. I rate both of these players extremely highly and wouldn’t be surprised if they turn out to be of the ilk of Gibbs and Selwood.
At this stage both Masten and Cotchin will be in my final team. Entering their third year and both being restricted by injuries in the past 2 seasons, I believe that they are both ready to explode and become DT guns. I can’t find a place for Tom Swift in my team with these 2 locked and loaded.
I will be monitoring the NAB cup closely, but will find it very difficult to drop one of them.
Masten is locked for me… but pending Cotchins NAB cup performances, he might slot in to 5th Mid position..
Masten should be able to get plenty with ball movers Priddis, Dalziell and Rosa.. and with Kerr getting the #1 tag we’ll hopefully see Masten reach his full potential.
Lets keep in mind, intraclub stats are about as useful as tits on a bull….best 22 vs rookies is always going to be a stat attack!!!
So i’ll wait to see NAB cup stats before making the final decision
Calvin allow me to propose something to you. (not marriage)
How about neither? David MacKay from the Crows was described today in the paper by Simon Goodwin along with Patty Dangerfield as having “Improved out of sight this preseason”. MacKay only attracts a price tag 20-30k higher than your two boys there and has another year on their heads. Will be a beneficiary of Bernie Vince’s breakout year and Thompson being tagged anyway leaves the likes of MacKay to play outside and run the footy.
I’ll make one more point so I don’t bore you, no one was a bigger critic of MacKay two years ago than myself, I bagged the poor kid to no end but last season he was a revelation and showed class and poise across half back.
At $320,800 make sure you have a look.
Being a crows fan mate, I’m a Mackay fan big time. He certainly shows something!
My concern with him is the amount of time he will play right in the guts, you might know more here though, but what 20-30k…..
On the other hand, Cotchin/Masten are mege mega under priced and providing they will go through a full year, they will rise in $$ big time… prob more than Mackay
But yeah, big fan
Yeah thats fair enough but are you looking at those two boys as Cash cows or as a permanent midfield type?
I’m not concerned with MacKays time in the guts, he’ll be more that sweeper half-back and wingman. van Berlo seems to be being groomed to replace Goodwin as that Half back quarter back. All I know is MacKay is going to see a lot of free ball and will probably fill a midfield spot for me this year.
bernie vince played that sweeper roll last year alot and always fell back to receive the side ways kicks out the backline when the crows switched out of defense. thats why he’s so much this year all those 15m kicks and marks and 1 2s. so Mackay mightn’t slot in to thats spot to well and if it dose i wouldn’t want vince in my team. not to say the crows wont have a change in game plan or if vince starts getting tagged, i wouldnt be surprised if vince get reported this year, at the crows games hes got the biggest mouth and he loves getting people angry at him. i saw him get taken out off the ball at least 5 times year and he aint to shy to retaliate.
Yeah thats why I’m going with D Mac, cos Vince will be tagged. Also just on Bernie as a player and not a dt’er for a moment, a lot of his touches are take aways from packs, he is very good at the contested footy, not some soft DT specialist.
McKay was a gun in that premlim. I was going to get him but then saw his price and thought that there might be better bargains out there. Wellingham maybe, Taylor (tom) Swift, the list is long…
you have missed the mackay boat matey,
you are exactly 1 year late.
he will be good no doubt but wont rise in price as much as others.
neither
not sure at this stage, until the nab cup ive gone with tom swift over them
I got these guys both in my team but I really do need another low $400,00, high $300,000 as a solid midfield keeper. Any suggestions?
maybe jordan lewis. he can seriously rack em up
Wellingham got a ton of it in the pies internal trial and played all of it in the guts.
cooney
Its a tough spot to fill, this midpriced midfielder, so many option.
Masten, Cotchin, Redden, Mackay and even McVeigh for the punters.
Right now i have MAsten and Redden, but expect that to change!
Injury free – both of these boys could be keepers – If they both start the year ok, I can see a number of pre-rd 3 bubble trades into many teams.
Both are a risk coming back from injury but could set you up nicely for the season. Prime candidates for upgrade to elite players or filling that 5th – 6th midfielder spot as long as the’re on the paddock.
Both on the radar atm.
Both look good.
My concern with Masten is that he may not be suited for fantasy.
Massive amount of handballs, few marks.
I remember that game where he got about 38 touches against port late last year, and only just cracked a 100.
If he needs 38 touches to get a hundred, it doesn’t look good for his consistency week to week. I am sure he will score some big numbers, but, whether he consistently score 90+ is the doubt I have.
That my friend is a cracker point… I remember that now and was blown away by it
thats a very good point and probably the reason i’ll stay away from him, also i don’t recall him doing much tackling or slotting many goals either.
That’s true, but Masten had groin trouble last year which affected his kicking, he was stabbing at the footy which meant he was spraying them all over the place, and as such he chose to handball alot of the time. This year, however, he’s completely over his groin trouble, and reports from the intra-club match indicate that his kicking was pretty good. So I’d expect his DT scores to rise just from the extra points he’ll get as he kicks the ball more often, add his strong fitness base and potential for improvement and he’s a very attractive prospect.
Isolated examples don’t paint the full picture though. In round 2 game vs Port, Masten had 14 kicks, 9 hb’s, 5 marks, 3 tackles and kicked 1.1 for a DT score of 94. In rnd 17 he had 26 disposals and 7 tackles for a DT of 93. So you can’t say he ‘needs’ 38 possessions to get a big score. I reckon you’d be mad to not at least consider him this year.
@Kingo, what about Burgoyne, surely at that price ($314,600) he’s a steal? Just a matter of if he starts RD1…
Stay well away from Burgoyne. Not suited to DT at all. Does not take enough marks. His possessions are more quality than quantity. Just remember he wont have Brendon Lade at Hawthorn tapping the ball down his throat so that he can kick goals from stoppages. Hawthorn’s rucks are very ordinary.
Also big worries about his knee. I doubt he will able to string a lot of games together. He may be cheap but he is not worth the risk. There is not much upside to him.
from my understanding the reason masten wasn’t kicking the ball is because of groin problems.
but his groins are now ‘A OK’ then I figure he might start using the boot again.
also I wouldnt be tagging cotchin before cousins. so i think they are both valid options if fit.
Im going to the eagles vs essendon game on friday night, I will do a bit of a write up about it on saturday. Hopefully we get to see some essendon rookies and Gumby aswell.
Neither. Better options out there.
Im going sidebottom instead of them at the moment
My thoughts are neither. My 5th Midfield spot is being taken up by KERR! He’s $271,600 which is 20 grand cheaper than both of these guys. You know he is a gun, and he’s training the house down at the moment according to all reports.
The plan is, Kerr goes nuts and becomes a keeper, at worst he makes me heaps of money. I’ve got a good feeling about him.
Team Malovan out.
hey calvin….good choice to consider cotchin…a player thats been talked up since he joined the AFL…this is his first ever full preason since signing with the tigers…and still he’s proven worthy in previous seasons…so to have the skill and full fitness at round 1…and priced at under 300k…hes an obvious pick for me!
hey guys
whats the word on muston ans tuck for the hawks are they looking at early and plenty of games this year
Had Tuck last year…………………. Don’t go there!!!
thoughts on chucking in dalziell or andrew walker for that low 300k middy?
I wouldn’t touch Bradd, only because for his price he needs to be guarenteed best 22 and if you believe the Eagle’s fans, they’ve got 10 future A-grade midfield options that can take the space up on the flanks until they run into the middle.
Bradd has good run, an absolute elite athlete, but when they talk about him being used as a run with player they are actually saying: “We don’t rate his ability to positively influence games, we’ll use him to retard someone else’s.” That will only fly until one of their other athletes develops a game style to shut down their opponent and hurt on the rebound <- the future of AFL players in my opinion. Think Kane Cornes meets Simon Black.
It won't take long before the Eagles have so many class kids running through the middle that unless Razzle Dazzle's offensive game becomes more about finding targets forward and less about finding space sideways to be a get out option for his team mates, he's just not going to be able to earn a spot.
Dunno if your taking the piss or not with the “10 A-grade midfield” comment haha, but anyway. I think Razzle is just what West Coast need, but just want DT coaches dont need. I see his ability to run and his decent frame being used around stoppages to create space for our better players. He will be a blocker in the same vein that Rowan Jones and Michael Braun were used a few years back.
Don’t think he will get as many cheap touches this year, be more in the contest rather than hanging off packs.
i am a fan of dalziel his in my team at the moment but nicks making me think twice about him, any other thoughts?
I wouldn’t touch DDD with a 10 foot pole, highly unlikely to be a regular in the team this year. Will be keeping a close eye on Masten and Cotchin over the next 4 weeks, concerns over Masten’s PPP. May kick a lot more now that his groin is ok (and he is deadly by foot). Kerr does seem good value but will get the number 1 tag each week.
My team name say’s it all. Masten to smash it in this year, had a 7 game stretch at the end of last year where averaged 100. Look to see him push his average up to over 90 this year and fill a spot as a starting mid. If have enough trades reckon could probably swap him across for a premium who drops in price at some stage. But have to be on him.
The Eagles are going to smash some teams at subi this year and rack up huge DT scores
75, 84, 101, 93, 76, 58, 28….
= 100 avg?
hmm… guess Swan must have averaged about 390 then
An average of 73 in his last seven games hey (According to avz, not double checking his figures). At that price and injury free, Masten could be a good selection.
I think I may just take both on and free up a little bit more money for the backline. Killed me in donuts last year the backline. Plenty of Mids that are lower ranged that can score, not that many backs that you can have on the bench scoring for you consistantly. Im personally investing more in that area this year!
Can disregard the 28 as that’s when he crocked himself and call it an av of 81.
With you on the backline Cuz. Stacking mine with premiums this year as there are a lot more mid-price/rookie mids and fwd this year. The only backs with value seem to be the ones with injury worries (Ladson, Waters). Rather go for value elsewhere.
Damm rechecked my figures and was reading wrong stats, now i’m not as sold on Masten but think may go anyway…
Would not touch Masten with a 10 foot pole.
Will have a look how he goes at the NAB cup game this Friday. Don’t believe everything you hear in the media, his intra club game was just… average.
how do you figure?
is it actually true that palmer wont play round 1 or are people just saying that? because it was never on the afl website..? if it true i will however be picking on of these two blokes, depending on whos better in nab
@ Nick & Chris Muston RE: Bradd Dalziel…
How could you say that he is not in the Eagles best 22!?!?
If he slotted into the Lions midfield with the likes of Power, Black, Adcock, Selwood etc then he will get a run in the Eagles midfield for sure.
One big point that your forgetting is that Subiaco is his old stomping ground, the place where he racked up MASSIVE numbers which led to him being drafted in the first place. He is a proven dream teamer, in fact, he basically is Bradd “dream team” Dalziel. averages in the 90’s for his career and is priced in the low $300’s. Massive value there either as a keeper or as an upgrade to a gun!
Here are the players he will be competing/rotating with:
Houlihan, Masten, Kerr, Swift, Ebert, Selwood, Rosa, Priddis.
DDD will surely get a run in that midfield, if not then at least of the half back flank!!
And finally, why would they have picked him up if they didn’t think he was in the best 22?
Get on him!
neither for me
pimp my team PLEASE! 90k left for last mid.
hodge, carrazzo, fisher, mcphee, birchall, kennelly, m.farmer (phil davis, h sheperd)
ablett, hayes, gibbs, cooney, dalziell, trengove (shuey, ?)
ottens, hille (skipper,lobbe)
riewoldt, brown, rioli, tippett, gray, ziebell, rohan (dennis-lane, gumbleton)
Please leave comments
Mcphee is overpriced…. wont get a game as he is getting old.
Ottens is not a good first ruck choice…. go to someone like kruezer who is set for a breakthrough year.
Rohan is predcited to not yet have the build of an afl footballer yet and it is said that someone like lewis jetta will get a game over him in sydney.
also you have very expensive and veyr cheap players on your team. you need a better mix. having first year players like rohan starting for you is not ideal because there is a chance they may not play at ll
also how does everyone rate lachie henderson from brissie now at the blues, jayden post at the tigers, sherman and colin sylvia.
Crows fans: will talia or phil davis get muhc of a look in this year?
phil davis should definately get a game at one time or another…nab cup will give us a better view of this
I dont think Talia will get a run (esp early). The word from Adelaide however is that the players have given him the nickname “Jena” (Talia). Should be a good laugh when he does start playing if the crowd gets hold of that little gem!!
Also Phil Davis is no certainty just yet because Stevens may take Ottens role from last year
Davis should get a few games this year for sure, so should Cook.
Another crow worth a mention is Dangerfield at only $230k he’s well worth a look in. I personally think he could be a brownlow contender within 3-4 years.
Steel Sidebottom also deserves a lookin for your midfield.
Just out of curiosity has anyone considered Ricky Petterd from Melbourne?
Played 18 games last year, and towards the end of the season had a run of about 5 games hitting between 75-120!
Priced at $313k and also MID/FWD
This is a great one to ponder.
I like Cotchin the most. Heaps of DT potential (well, more than Masten), but injury risk. A bit of a line ball call.

* DT TALK
Hmm, Masten hurt me last year, Cotchin, well, if he can get over his injuries – look out, not so sure I’ll be trusting him enough though…. both clubs reckon their boys are flying this pre season, looks to be a really really tough one this year. I would have to chuck another name up in R Palmer…
Masten is locked in after that performance!
