West Coast Intra-Club: 3rd February

Thanks to Cam.

Got along to the West Coast intra-club game tonight and knew you would be intereted in some of the outcomes. The session basically worked in 3 lots of 20mins. From what I could see the majority of the guys wearing the white jumpers seemed like regular best 22 selections (or have been in the past) and the guys in blue were more the “rookies”  and some guys from the WAFL (teams attached). Some stuff that I found interesting in impacting on DT were:

  • The absence of Dean Cox (expected), Beau Waters (expected), Josh Kennedy, Mitch Brown, Matt Spangher, Eric MacKenzie, Adam Cockie, and Tom Swift.
  • Bradd Dalziell, Brett Ebert and Brad Sheppard being grouped with the blue squad (don’t know if that means they aren’t thought of as being set in the best 22 as yet).
  • Luke Shuey was supposed to have a run-with role on Daniel Kerr, according to the clubs website, but Kerr was left very open the entire session. Kerr also chose to handball a lot of his posessions which may indicate he’s still feeling a bit of that groin soreness from last season, but he did play the entire game out.
  • Shannon Hurn and Scott Selwood were used as sweeping defenders/halfbacks and gave a lot of run going forward.
  • Mark Lecras was used purely as a forward for the 1st half of the game and then came to the bench. No sign of injury but didn’t return.
  • Mark Nicoski was used mostly across half forward.
  • Andrew Embley was used on a wing for the first part of the match but then spent the latter part of the game floating around half forward and pushing into the attacking 50.
  • Chris Masten looked very good on the ball and like he has picked up a bit of pace. He was tackled hard in the 2nd and was down for a while, before running the game out. Didn’t have the same impact after that incident.
  • Sam Butler was good for the first 2 lots of 20 mins but then came to the bench and had a long chat with the physio team before going down to the rooms and not taking any further part in the match. Didn’t look very serious.
  • Brad Sheppard was mostly used on a wing and was in the huddle with the midfield group, but had little impact.  He looked proppy with some sort of lower left leg knock or injury but did return to the field after doing some run throughs with the physio team, before being taken to the rooms and not seen again.
  • Quinten Lynch was also taken to the rooms with Sheppard and not seen again. No sign of injury from what I could see though.
  • Adam Selwood copped a knee to the head as the final siren sounded which left him a bit dazed but seemed ok after a few minutes (he is a Selwood after all).

  1. thats bad hearing about shappard in the blue team. any news on hows shueys training?

    • Shuey was also on the blue team tassie lad, though I think that may have been intentional to give him a role on an AFL player. I don’t necessarily think Ebert, Shuey and Dalziell being on the second team is necessarily something to worry about.

  2. I went also, Shuey toweled Kerr up in the first 20 minute third – kicked a great goal on the run from a tight angle(on his left) – and looked in great touch. Kerr lifted after that, and Shuey got less of the footy – but was still very impressive. Shuey didn’t only played the first 40 minutes(was off for the last 20) – clearly eagles easing him into it. But very good signs.

In regards to Sheppard, he did look a bit proppy/tentative – got a few posessions, but most seem to be uncontested. Speaking of uncontested, Dalziell was getting a few cheapies coming out of defence…

Aside from that, there wasn’t much else interesting – no injuries(except selwood getting bashed in the head) – and the game was fairly scrappy – to be expected I guess at this stage.

Still can’t get over how high Natanui leaps at ruck contests.

  3. Fancy seeing you here Birchall Reality!!!

Season 2010 is Brichally over for you. My boys are set to Krueze as we coast into top 100!..

  4. The white was there best 22 and the royal blue is the also ran’s, was t hat ex jail bird Andrew Krakhore playing in the royal blue team or someone of the same name,
Good news about Shuey he might be a good CASH COW this year.

  5. Did you guys notice that Kerr stopped in the middle of the ground late in the 2nd quarter (or might have been early 3rd quarter)? Was slightly limping and holding his right hip. Seemed to run fine after that however. I think I saw him kick once?

Masten was also down for quite a while as mentioned and looked a bit proppy in the 3rd quarter. I would definitely not say he starred and was also very sloppy with his disposal.

Brett Jones got a few nice touches and setup some good play. I wonder if he will take ball away from Hurn when the season comes around and he gets more game time?

Sheppard and Shuey were mostly unsighted, in fact alot of the WAFL boys had more influence on the play for the Royals. Shuey did kick an awesome goal though.

Did anyone notice Lynch has lost a fair bit of weight too? Seems likely he won’t be playing deep in the forward line.

  6. umm i believe its Brad ebert….

  7. Nah Kerr seemed fine – had some explosive runs through the midfield – no sign of his groin flaring up at all from what I could see. Masten was only down for a bit because he got hit with a big tackle – likely just winded, kept playing after that anyways – but was quieter – certainly not injured.

Lynch didn’t play – so not sure who you are referring to.

    • Lynch definitely did play, he had one or two big roosts at goal which both missed. I think he only played like 3-4minutes per period. No influence on the game.

Kerr was fine year, running well – very quick infact. He kicked it a bit some were just little dinky kicks, but he was using the ball by both hand and foot, don’t think he’s scared to kick, just the way he plays and the way the team plays the handball option is generally the better option.

  8. hey this is a bit off topic but does anyone have any news on Matty Stokes?

  9. Interesting to see Andrew Krakouer playing as well. He must be out of jail.

  10. Luke Shuey was iced up in the 3rd qtr last night. It appeared to be an elbow problem.

My opinion of the Eagles rookies/young players was that they are all still a while away. I’d be surprised if we saw Sheppard/Shuey before rounds 7/8.

Sheppard still looks small and immature in his physique compared to the older players.

One smokey could be Ashton Hams. I’m not too sure if anyone is on the LTI list at West Coast for him to get elevated but he has played a lot of senior footy and looks as good an option as a small defender as anyone else on the Eagles list.

  11. Spector, did also notice Lynch looked like he’s trimmed down a bit. He didnt really get into the game enough to tell if its going to change his game style but he certainly looked a bit more lean.

Everyone seems to be pumping Masten up a lot. He was very impressive compared to what we’ve seen from him in the past, and was probably one of the best on ground, but in the end it was a training match…will wait and see what else he throws up in the pre-season.

  12. Yeh, all speculation at the minute. Bring on the NAB!!

  13. luke shuey was head to head not run with kerr. (interview with woosha)
from reports ive heard(afl website) played 2 thirds game time and dominated. apparently had the better of kerr especially in the first third for the game.
