Dual Position Players: The New AFL Dream Team Rule

One of the features of Toyota AFL Dream Team 2010 is the new Dual Position Players Substitute rule. This will hopefully be a great inclusion to the game and limit some zeros over the season.

But personally, I’m not going to go too stupid in trying to ‘use’ this rule to my advantage.

The new rule explained:

If a user has players selected in two different positions, who were available for selection in multiple positions (eg. They have a Defender who could be selected as a Defender and a Forward, and a Forward who could initially be selected as a Defender and a Forward), they will simply be able to switch them around – this will assist further in covering injuries and team strategy in terms of how they edit their line-up. This would be done simply by using the current Substitutions functionality, in the same way they substitute between their Starting line-up of 22 and bench. Previously to achieve this, they would have had to trade out then in that particular player, at the potential cost of trades. We’ve also greatly simplified the selection of emergencies, who can now be much more easily toggled off and on.

Below is a list of all dual positions players this year, separated into each ‘type’. As you can see, there are limited players available. Be smart!

  1. I wont be using it at all.

  2. cheers for the list Warnie :)

  3. It could be a valuable asset or tool these players wth the duel position

  4. Not quite correct… nothing like a bit of bogus information to throw a few off the DT scent ;)

DP; use it or lose it

  5. i think i might just select goddard with my first pick and be done with it.

  6. problem is to pick mids that can also play in another position. usually you never pick a dual pos player in the mid, you would take their other position. This will make it interesting.

  7. There is no problem picking up fwds or defs that are also eligable for the mids….but if you want to use it you would need to pick up one of those dual position players as a midfielder. Not really useful IMO

  8. A quick question on this multi-positioning, not sure if its been asked/said but he goes. Is the swapping of players only allowed for a week to fill a donut or can it be permanent. Say you have a def/fwd who u select in your defenders and a similiar multi-position player in the fwds. The fwd has gone up significantly in value and the def only slightly. If there is a player who is def only who u want to upgrade to but can only afford to do so with the fwd, can you swap them and upgrade the fwd?

Perhaps even a three way swap from def/fwd, fwd/mid and def/mid to get the wanted trade done?

If this is the case then i would think this is something to definitely think long and hard about when picking your team and identifying long term upgrade targets. Perhaps as important as using this feature to fill your zeroes?

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but just got me thinking.

  9. Clear as mud. LOL
I think it something i will consider when trading but will not let it impact on my initial team.

  10. It’s only going to save donuts if the dual position player gets injured and both your emergencies in that position are coving other players or not playing.

I don’t think it’s going to make that much of a difference.

Although I like the flexibility it will create for trading cash cow dual position rookies.

  11. If you don’t take advantage of this new rule, you might as well not play at all. Used correctly it will be a massive advantage, not only as far as covering zeros, but also for upgrading and getting more premium player scores. Gold!

  12. I think brad has clearly identified the most influencial aspect of the rule change, however the extra donut cover it offers in terms of flexibility will have a huge impact I’d say. It’s gonna be interesting!

  13. for those who are worried about putting say o’keefe or chapman or higgins in the middle, in the past these types have forwards have shown they can score just as highly as midfielders. if it’s going to allow you the flexibility to cover a zero etc. i think it’s worth it.

    • its true that there are forward / midfield players who score enough to be a passable dt midfielder, however if you select 1 or 2 or more in your midfield for the flexability thats 1, 2 + premium forward line players that you cant select in your forward line.

I think this duel positioning rule is a bit of a trap, it only gives extra coverage if the player that can change positions is the one who is injured, and even then there still has to be additional cover in the swapped position.

As mentioned it could be handy for rookie upgrades / downgrades, but i havent found 2 rookies that i am strongly considering with the same duel position eligibility to use it anyway…

at this stage my starting team will not be able to use this rule at all

  14. I can see it being a very important strategy if used correctly, especially in the ruck, i found myself with only one ruckmen for the last few rounds last year, hopefully that will be a thing of the past now that this rule has been brought in.

  15. but still the rule is really messing me about.. my team has changed dramatically since what i thought was my good draft on fan footy. i will probably go back and forth 52 times over the next 52 days. dual position strategy or not?

  16. its gay how M CLarke is not a ruck/forward really buggered me

  17. I think the only way I will be using this rule is to have Lobbe on the fwd bench and Tippet in the rucks, I also have Ottens in the ruck so if he gets injured and then Tippet gets injured Im screwed

    • then you use warnock as a sub, he should be ur first on the ruck bench

      • yeah i have, also without even trying Ive managed to get a player that I can swap in each area now, picked all the players I wanted or that I felt had good value and came up with a nice ability to swap some players around

  18. It’s for when GC come into the AFL.

Won’t effect my team selection at all.

    • that is a really good point, i think you are completely on the money there. it will be an important feature next year, this year however i think there is more to be lost looking for flexibility than there is to gain

    • I’ve been thinking about the change since Warnie first mentioned it and I still can’t come up with a good reason to have dual position players this season. You’d really need to get lucky/unluck however you want to call it for the exact person to get injured, so unless you really want the player in your team, I don’t think it’s worth it this year??

Sure I could see reason to have maybe Chapman in your midfield and O’keefe in your fwd line and swap them around for when Chapman eventually gets injured, but from what I’ve been reading the midfield crop is pretty strong so you should probably have reasonable cover.

Sure next season as you’ve mentioned this change could become effective, I think it’s just been brought in this season to give people a bit of a look at it before the new team comes into play next season and people are not to caught out by the new rule.

Just what I think, makes sense to me

      • totally agree. Chapman and O’keefe are the only ones I’d even consider as a mid, but I still think there are too many other better options to be had in the mids this year

  19. I found it useful as the bench midfielder has covered backline postions.
    Carazzo
    Hodge
    Gilbee
    Ladson.

  20. I think there is value to be had in the dual position player. Emergencies or not…there will always be a few rounds during the season where we cop donuts – the dual setup helps cover this.

Then there is the whole trade flexibility. Personally, I’ll try and use it, if nothing more than to add a bit more variability to the game. As usual, time will tell how useful it really is.

  21. An example of how I plan to use this:

I have Mcphee in defense, and a strong backline. My forwards are strong too but with a rookie starting. I want Franklin in Round 1 but I’d prefer Sheppard in the backs then 2 rookies in the forwards. So I sub Mcphee (DEF) with Markovic (FWD) and start Sheppard and Mcphee instead of Markovic/Gumbleton and Mcphee. Then when Buddy comes back, I can sub Mcphee back to defense and start Mcphee and Buddy.

I also have Tippett in the forwards, with Hille or Ottens (undecided) in the Rucks. If one goes down for a week or two I can play Tippett in the rucks and my fwd rookie in the forwards… or even Mcphee if my forward rookies lack but my defense is strong.

    Just my thoughts.

    • One thing is for sure, with McPhee and Hille/Ottens, you’re no threat.

      • Hille/Ottens could both be top 5 rucks this year, Cox is a risk, Sandi has a massive workload which is why I have him, but he could miss crucial games like last year. What ruckman isn’t an injury risk? NABcup will let us see them at least before we lock them in. I hope Laycock gets heaps of TOG.

        • Very doubtful either of Hille or Ottens could make top 5, let alone both of them.

Ottens has been a solid DT scorer in the past but doesnt get enough of the ball to be a huge DT scorer, even at his best he was fringe top 5 at best. He also has a terrible injury history so 22 games from him is extremely unlikely – great ruckman and one of geelongs most important players, but not top 5 DT scoring material

Hille will mainly play forward this year due to his knee getting nursed back into footy and the emergence of Ryder last year. The long spells up forward will mean inconsistency. I’d expect Kosi type numbers at best, will probably have some big 100+ type scores in between some mediocre ones. not top 5 DT material

all that being said they are both very cheaply priced and have huge upside for this season, both will be in my calculations

  22. I would consider Mitch Farmer from Rich if I was starting 3 rookies in the mids and none in the backs.

Say for instance you have a backline of Hodge…… down to Ladson, em Davis, Mcguire

And a mid set up of premium premium premium rookie rookie rookie, rookie Farmer.

You basically have a choice 7 rookies to fill the 3 places. Farmer can go to the backs (swap with Hodge/Ladson) and Davis/Maguire could come on. You could also use it when one of the mid rookies has peaked in price, trade em down and start a back rookie who has job security.

    Food for thought.

    • playing 3 rookies in the Mid is going to make things tough! I would usually be happy with 50pts from a roockie, and if you get an injury in there or in defence you are really screwed!

  23. You won’t win the competition if you intentionally use this new feature.

Will SportingBet take money on that? GambleVin?

  24. It’s good for me as I have three rucks that can play forward one in my forward two in ruck I have about 6 players that can be moved from defence to forward or forward to defence and a few that can go from defence. Midfield and midfield defence and forwards and midfielders that can switch so pretty good feature I’ll never get a donut again yay. And I didn’t even plan all those places :}

  25. It may be useful, but i dont think there are enough mid/fwd rookies of quality to make it really worthwhile

    • exactly – i would have been considering it had trengove, bastinac, jetta and a few more of those type players been named as mid/fwd rather than just mid. as it is unless a lot changes over the nab cup there are way too many potential well scoring mid only rookies and a lack in quality fwd/back rookies to even consider naming a duel positioned player in the midfield

      • definately. most of the predicted cash cows you HAVE to be on are only available in one posi. Tippet (fwd) & Lobbe (ruck) being the only exception, bringing Tippet in to cover the returning from injury Ottens or Hille if they go down again. However Tippet is an awkward one to have in the forwards – predicting he’ll improve (5 – 8pts) again this year but not expecting him to be a keeper (JUST falls short)

  26. I can’t really see it helping the midfield too much. None of the real guns or the top rookies have dual position and so you’d have to sacrifice your team slightly to make room for a dual possie. Fwd/Ruc is a possibility if you go for Tippett/Lobbe.
Def/Mid is maybe a go but one of the major DT rules is to use a dual position player, especially Mid duals, in the weaker position. Goddard as a Mid would be handy as cover for other Def/Mids in the backline e.g. Hodge, Carrazz, Gilbee.
It’s an interesting rule but not one to focus on at the expense of tried and tested team structure.

  27. I found it useful to set up a team and then play around with subs to see what happens.

After initially being sceptical, seeing in action has changed my mind a little. Can see the worth now.

  28. Any Collingwood followers out there?

What’s the word on Simon Buckley, Is he a chance to play from round 1?

  29. This is a hugely powerful change in rules. Should see alot less donuts if people pick right…

  30. Stokes – from Forward – to Forward/drug trafficker

  31. It all depends on what you want to win??? Eliminator, League or Overall.

I go for League because that’s where the money is – There must be 1000’s of underground leagues out there. Need to be in peak form come finals time. It’s a marathon – not a sprint.

  32. Hi fellas,
