Deck of Dream Team 2010: Rhys Palmer

Name: Rhys Palmerryhs
Club: Fremantle
Position: Midfield
2008 Average/Games: 87.5/20
2009: 79/5
Predicted 2010 Average: 92
Deck of DT Rating: 8 of Hearts.

Why Should I Pick Him?

If you have never heard of Rhys, he’s a gun midfielder who was selected by Freo pick #7 in the 2007 draft. In 2008 ha played 20 games averaging 21d a game at a healthy DT average of 87.5. He collected the most amount of ball for the Dockers that year and handled a tag well for a first year rookie.  In 2009 he did his ACL in round 5 and has been in rehab ever since. Good news is… he’s back! He might have a discounted price which is even better! In his first 2 games of ‘09 he went 90 and 100! He can play! In mid November Rhys said this about his recovery… “At the moment I’m on track for a couple of NAB Cup games, but then again it’s up to (coach) Mark Harvey and (sports science manager) Jason Weber, so I’m just trying to get myself right and do the right thing. It will give me a good opportunity this year to get my body right, get my core stability up and my strength up as well. Hopefully, I’ll come back a better runner. I’ve put on a couple of kilos and looking at Geelong’s midfield everyone weighs around the 85kg mark. I’ve sort of looked at them and tried to take a leaf out of their book and put on a few extra kilos. The knee’s feeling great and coming along fine,” he said. “I’ve been on a running program over the last eight weeks … so I’ll gradually step it up until I get into the main group … [which should be] just after Christmas, if not before.”

Why Not Pick Him?

Well, anyone coming back from a year out with a knee is always a massive gamble. Personally I’d be very surprised if he plays all games this year and will need a ‘rest’ at some stage. If his price is discounted then maybe he’s an option for you on the bench. He will get the #1 tag for the Dockers but he has proven that he can shake them.

Final Thoughts

For me it’s a YES. Definitely be watching him over the pre-season and NAB Cup games if he does get up for them.

  1. Yes, especially if he is a bit cheaper than a few others on my list.

  2. I think he has a good chance to be a half decent cash cow sitting on the bench if the Knee holds up, Going to be on my short list on Mid benchers, Proven DT whore if fit.

  3. He’s in my team at the moment but i’m not 100%, if he’s at a discounted price he will be handy to have in my team over the first 6 – 8 weeks and then upgraded to a guy averaging 100+. But then again if he’s averaging over 90 i would probably keep him unless i had the spare trades and cash to eventually trade him to a 100+ guy.
Definately too expensive to warm the bench, if he’s not in ur starting 22 he shouldn’t be in ur side.

  4. if rhys gets through any nab games hes a lock in my 22….to cheap and is certain to rise atleast 100k imo.

  5. Mr. Palmer or my right hand man.. get it?? anyway… Pretty sure I’m going to get him in my team have been thinking that since he went down last year. If they say they’re going to rest him, I’ll take hopefully a 50+ from a youngen on my bench if Palmer is avg above 90+ every other week

  6. He won’t be discounted because he played too many games this year (from what I understand anyway).

My question is, how is Rhys only an 8 of hearts when you had Patty V as a Jack of Hearts? Is this a trick pack of cards?

Palmer is in my squad at this stage

  7. If he’s go the discount (which i think he will have) then you’d be looking at 239k so a lock. But without the discount it becomes more difficult to pick him when there are other options avaliable who are NOT returning from a knee reconstruction.

  8. all about his pre-season

  9. He doesn’t cop the number 1 tagger? Hasleby does.

    • Hasleby was out injured the year that Palmer played, so Palmer did get the number one tag.

      • I didnt know he copped the number one tag in his first year. I thought his disposal was a bit average. He finished with the third most clanger kicks for 2008.

        • Yeah he coped a tag most weeks after his good start to the season. Over here in WA there was millions of interviews with him and Harvey talking about how he combated the tag because it didn’t seem to affect him.

Yeah his disposal was shocking but we’re not a SuperCoach site so doesn’t matter too much

          • I know Hasleby was injured that year but I’m just saying, next year Palmer won’t have the number 1 tag.

          • Well for a first year player thats pretty impressive to just shrug of the number one tag each week, so it doesnt look like it matters to much if he gets it or not next year.

  10. Definitely will be underpriced for what he can average. Im hopeful hes over the knee injury because he could almost become your sixth keeper in 2010. Hes in my plan side at the moment because I cant see to many in his price range averaging above him.

  11. Why would you bother tagging a Freo player????

They never have the ball anyway!!!!!

Ottens to miss 6-8 weeks of training with injuries suffered in a boating accident.

    • Nooooooooo he was gonna be my second ruckman. whyyy DT…… wwwwhhhhhhhyyyyy?
oh well im gonna have to find a new second ruck now who has done a whole preseason.=[

      • Thats why im locking in Trent west as my bench ruck. should get some game time you would think.

        • It’s a shame ottens is out. I suppose Seaby, Hille and Krueuzer are the other likely options. I also havent dismissed the possibility of playing a rookie ruck in second position. Article on afl.com says Lobbe from Port will become the Power’s 2nd ruck. You could upgrade him later in the year to a cox or mitch clark anyway.

          • Lobbe is guaranteed as my 3rd/4th ruck. However, reading that article the other day, I got the distinct feeling that, yes Lobbe was pencilled in and gotta get the opportunity, but they have a lot of backup options if need be, so he needs to perform. Take Andrew Browne this year for example.

I reckon it would be a very very brave man who plays Lobbe as their second ruck.

  13. fanplanner has him with a 20% discount- playing <6 games due to injury, 40% discount comes from a whole season missed, so they got himi at 293k which is good value anyway for a proven mid

  14. Lock Him In Eddy

    He’s a gun!!

  15. Haha lock that shit in g! Dt pro Rhys will explode. Probs average 105 ! 19 games get him !

  16. He’s a lock for me. Harvey talks about resting players but very rarely does. With another few kilos on him, I’m looking for him to average 100+.

  17. will be a lock for me he wouldnt be in my team if i havnt have been on here

  18. This is exciting. I thought after his legendary first season, I wouldn’t be coaching Palmer again for a few years. He’d be keen to write his name in DT folklore this season, like the DT whore he is.

  19. Massively overrating the kid for everyone who expects a 100+ average.

    80-85 points per game.

He copped weak tags in 08, nothing compared to the heavy ones he’ll face in 2010 now he is a household name.

If he’s discouted, then yes. If he’s not… then hell no.
