Deck of Dream Team 2010: Adam Cooney

adamcooneyName: Adam Cooney
Club: Western Bulldogs
Position: Midfielder
2009 Average/Games: 90.3 / 20
Predicted 2010 Average: 103
Deck of DT Rating: King of Diamonds (because they’re ranga red)

Why should I pick him?
This bloodnut will have his best Dream Team year in 2010 – mark my words! His best year was his Brownlow year in ‘08 when he averages 92.4… he can certainly take that to another level as the second half of 2009 was friggen sensational! Listen to these numbers… from Round 10 (after he got back from a couple of weeks off with an injury and a limited pre-season), he smashed out 8 hundreds from a possible 13. That’s pretty awesome – at an average of smack bang on 100. But let’s take out the 61 he had against St. Kilda when he was tagged by Jones (he still had 23 touches… just a shame 15 of them were handballs)…. he averaged 103.5! That’s very nice! He can definitely crack the 100 point average for the year, therefore a massive bargain! The Bulldogs will continue to improve, so that’s a good thing for any Doggie you want to jump on. They have a pretty awesome midfield – which won’t change much from this year – so the tag could go to anyone (Cross, Boyd, etc).

Why shouldn’t I pick him?
The worry is that the ginger ninja had some knee surgery when the ‘09 season was done and dusted. This has meant the latest training report said he “is running after knee surgery” – doesn’t fill me with confidence. Hopefully this will increase as the pre-season goes on and will be ready to rock and roll come NAB Cup time. I guess the other worry is if he does cop a tag. How does he deal with it? Like I said before, he only scored 61 against the Saints when Clinton Jones shut him down. Hopefully this doesn’t happen too often (however, history tells us he is still competent when he gets extra attention).

Final thoughts.
The Coon-Dawg is locked and loaded for the Warne Dawgs. Priced at an average of 90 – you can’t go wrong! He will explode in 2010… and I see him as a bargain after his slow start to 2009. Plenty of upside in this Fanta pants. He’s 24 years of age. Tasty, tasty! Thank me later!

  1. I must admit, I wasn’t thinking of Cooney this early on but after an arse kissing spiel like that, it makes him a little hard to resist. Any ideas what his start price might be?
Oh, and these write ups are awesome by the way. Makes my evenings (Finland time) more exciting!

  2. He’s cheap, durable and should improve but my only concern is his average points per disposal. He has a PPD of 3.4 i think and that is probably why we dont see lots of 130+ scores. At 3.4 he needs about 30 disposals in a game just to get to the 100 mark. Having said that, he still finds a way to rack up so many diposals each game so should be a lock for my team next year.

    • Thats an interesting find with the PPD, i had a look at it awhile ago but couldnt be stuffed checking through alot of the players. I might have a look now and see which players have some of the higher points per disposal, it could be useful to have players like this cause then they wont usually have shocking scores compared to other players.

      • A perfect example of this is Gazza Ablett as Calvin pointed out in an episode of DT Talk last year. When he has less than 20 possessions… he struggles to put a decent score together.

        • All the players that i’m interested in for next year I calculate their durability over the past three years and their PPD. I found that Andrew Raines has a PPD of 3.1. Thats shocking. It means he can get 25 disposals and only score 80 DT points. Likewise, with the voldt (PPD = 6.16) he needs only 16d to reach the ton.

          • Goal kickers will always have a higher PPD than dudes that get in and get it.
Voldt gets 12pts per kick sometimes

  3. Not a fan of carrot-top-cooney. But after reading that I may have to lose my fanta-pants-free team moto and grab him if he is cheap enough.

He has to be real cheap tho, Coz I want my midfield prems to be busting out 120+ regularly.

  4. i think ill stick with my gut feeling and pass on him, but maybe my gut feeling will change by round 1

  5. everyone has a nicer average when you take out their bad games :)

  6. He plays like Judd so not a dt player

  7. Tough critics in here!
I’ll back him in with the Dawg – Go rednut

  8. good read warnie, ill take the fanta pants in the destROY mids.

  9. Sooooo Bored at work. No one is here, It’s Christmas ffs.

Need more DT stuff to read … stats, figures, injury updates anything.

Still waaayy too long until DT starts.

  10. I feel your pain too. I’m on the gas after being on the gas for the last 2 nights straight… ahh the life of a teacher… he he

    Long live the summer holidays

  11. I had thought about Coon-dog before this, but now that Ive read about what he averaged at the end of this year I reckon he is a lock for what he will be priced at. Only concern for me is that surgery he had

  12. Bartel, Bryce Gibbs, Pendlebury…. now who to take out for the coon-dog?

  13. Does any one know where you can find these PPD stats.
