Deck of Dream Team 2010: Nick Riewoldt

voldtName: Nick Voldt
Club: St Kilda
Position: Fwd
2009 Average/Games: 106.5/21
Predicted 2010 Average: 108
Deck of DT Rating: Ace

Why Pick Him?

Well, firstly The Voldt is an absolute gun. Averaging 106.5 last year and 99 the year before, Nick Reiwoldt is a proven DT champion. In 2009 he averaged 100+ a huge 71% of the time placing him up there with the champion midfielders in the competition.  Another massive bonus here is that the Voldt is an outright forward and if you are planing to win this competition this year, you will have Voldt in you team at some stage, if not the start, definately the end! So why not start with him? This is why you might in 2010… The Voldt had been playing through a knee injury towards the end of 2009 (still knocking up 100+ scores) but throughout the pre-season Riewoldt has avoided surgery on his knee  and will join full training with the Saints this pre-season.  “I saw (Riewoldt) do a running session this morning  and he’s in really good shape,” St Kilda football manager Greg Hutchison said on December 3rd in the Herald Sun. How’s that sit with you lads?

Why Not Pick Him?

Let’s rephrase that… “Why not start with him?”… and this is why you might pass. Firstly he will cost you an arm a leg and probably your left nut, and traditionally the Voldt is a slow starter. In 2008 he averaged just 80 over his first 3 games and then did the same in 2009 where he averaged just 78.  My tip wait for the Voldt to have 1 bad game and then wait till he drops slightly and then JUMP on! Do not… I repeat do not wait for his 2nd shit game… it might not come!

Final Thoughts

Well what can I say – you will have Voldt at some stage, but what price will you pay! He is a walk up captain and with averages Vs the Pies and the Western Dawgs in 2009 of 130 and 122, this guy can play and is a DT ace!

  1. He is worth lefty, gun my first player picked every year….my favourite player to watch!! he almost carried us mighty saints to a flag….-sigh- im getting teary!. i wont start with him this year…..he is my FIRST upgrade, i dont care if im copping 6 donuts in my backline ill get the voldt if only to cheer him everytime he runs over the 50m mark and takes a great mark! how many times does he do this a year? The knee is a bit dodgy, wont have a pre-season round five he drops 50k ill get him in for sure!. great write up

  2. p.s that photo makes him look very well equipped, its not gay hes my captain!

  3. Great post as always!

  4. I won’t pick him in my original squad but he will definetley be one of my first upgades of the year. If you look at his price values for this year he generally hovered around the 430-450k mark. One or two bad games and he may fall under 400k, the perfect time to upgrade to him.

  5. I won’t be picking him in my starting squad as he is just too inconsistent at the start of the season. Once he gets down to about 400-420k i reckon I will definatly pick him up. I had him all of this year and loved him so I can see myself doing the same next year.

    • With a starting price of about $500,000 according to FanPlanner, there’s no chance of him dropping down to $400,000…

I’ve got Big Nick in my initial squad… Had a 39, 93, 102, 114, 136 for the 1st five games, and was back at starting price by Round 6. So waiting til mid-season will be too late, and I don’t see the point in burning a trade after Round 3 for a probable saving of only about $30,000-40,000.

  6. Probably be in my initial squad. I can’t see the point in waiting for him to drop 30-50k and picking him up in round 4-5. Reason being that your cash cows won’t have matured by that stage and you’d just be wasting a trade. I’d rather pay that extra 30-50 and have that trade in hand.

    • Totally agree Morts. I see a trade as being worth $100k and therefore burning one so early in the season for a $50k saving doesn’t make sense to me. I’m in from rnd 1, especially as he’s looking good this pre season.

  7. Like most people Saint Nick won’t be in my starting squad but he will be one of my first upgrades for the year. He is probably the best DT forward in the comp apart from Chapman and i think most of the top teams will have this guy in their team by the end.

  8. dont have him in my team yet, so basically expecting him to drop in price with a slow start to the year. would be perfect if that bad game came in round 3 so his price loss would extend for a couple more weeks.

  9. I will be waiting also, coz i want to see if his knee really is in good working order. I wouldn’t want to have him in my initial squad then his knee blows out in round 3 and he misses the next 4 weeks.
I’l be looking at getting him in when it suits me best, i won’t be putting a time frame on it, just sometime between round 1 and round 18.

Another good write up, cheers boys!

  10. I remember in 08′ I got him at his lowest price at around 300,000 in about Round 7 or so and I thought I could do th same in 09′ but I ended up getting him at high price. I’m probably going to try again to get him cheap and pick him up around round 7.

But 2 things can happen with Riewoldt, he could start slowly and be managed through the season (as not to damage his knee) and be primed for the finals. Or he could come gun blazing straight from the start due the heart break of losing the Grand Final as he is a very deterimined player.

  11. surely most of the saints players have maxxed out!, i dont think they will go as hard at the start of this year and players like hayes voldt and dal santo might be rested, or not Lol. If St kilda taught me anythin last year look for teams on the up! players in winning teams average improves..

  12. @ Clint_84

4 weeks for a knee blow out, hehehehehe probably a little bit more than that my freind but i get your point.
I was thinking along the same lines as you but i would to see him get right through NAB cup and at least the first 3 or 4 rounds before i commit that much money on a knee. But for sure a must have come rounds 4+

    • by blowing out i didn’t mean rupturing his ACL or anything i just meant flaring up, i know from personal experience it doesn’t take much for a dodgy knee to flare up and put u on the sidelines.

  13. i got him in last yr early on after his price drop and he was just incredible. i will most likely have him in my team rnd 1 because hes just a legend.

  14. hey fellas
where can i get the rough prices for the 2010 dream team season?
and how much do we get to spend?

Also i never had voldt last season :( played the “ill pick him up later trick” HAHAHA didnt quite work out for me

  15. Too inconsistant at the start of the season? I reckon he may have a quiet round 1 and then explode. Saints first 5 games and voldts 2009 score(s) against them

    R1 V Sydney 39,82
    R2 v Kangaroos 120,114
    R3 v Pies 126,134
    R4 v Dockers 114
    R5 V Power 136

So he may have a poor round 1, but could easily explode in rounds 2-5 which means his price wont drop all that much. I am considering paying full price for him because I will want to get him in at some point.

    • Yea looking at that it may be worth paying the extra cash to get him in your initial squad. And i guess it will be worth it in the end as long as he doesnt do a knee.

      • Career Averages Against Those Teams

        Collingwood 101.4
        Fremantle 106
        Kangaroos 88.9
        Power 76.9
        Sydney 81.8

Port Adelaide is infact his worst team

Last 5 scores against each team

        Collingwood 134, 126, 128, 105, 74 average – 113.4
        Fremantle 114, 126, 152, 107, 107 average – 121.2
        Kangaroos 114, 120, 128, 85, 86 average – 106.6
        Power 136, 73, 62, 36, 72 average – 75.8
        Sydney 82, 39, 88, 100, 68 average – 75.4

  16. He’s definitely in my team. Only thing that worries me is he normally scores lower against Sydney (if memory serves me correct). As much as I hate the thought, I’m wondering if I should wait till round 4 when his price drops (if he does get another low score against Bolton) and hope one of my mid-range forwards have a blistering first three rounds.
