Deck of Dream Team 2010: Trent Cotchin

trentcotchinName: Trent Cotchin
Club: Richmond
Position: Midfielder
2009 Average/Games: 67.4 / 10
Predicted 2010 Average: 92
Deck of DT Rating: Jack of Hearts.

Why should I pick him?
Third year player rule. There has been a ’small’ correlation of AFL players having their breakout Dream Team year in their third year of footy. He was the Tigers #2 draft pick in 2007 and his first year averaged 69 from 15 games. Now that he is in his third year and cracked the quarter of century of league games, Cotch has the chance to go bang. He is in a team/midfield that is improving and even last year with a few injurie woes, managed to have a few 20+ disposal games. Being priced at an average of 68 just rings of a bargain. Even if he doesn’t do what we predict/expect, he will go up in value and could help with a premium upgrade. Heaps and heaps of upside, so look for him to really make inroads this year as a definite Dream Team improver in 2010.

Why shouldn’t I pick him?
The main worry with Cotchin is his injury history. He missed the latter part of the 2009 season with a hip injury. Hopefully nothing to do with the dreaded OP! He started ‘09 with an achilles injury and was a late withdrawal in Round 16 due to illness. Maybe a little too high maintenance? Keep an eye on his pre-season which has only just started fully and hopefully he is 100% fit going into Round 1. One other ’slight’ worry is that Cotch has 93.75 points hanging over his head from the tribunal. Any ‘little’ misdemeanor will see him outed early in the season.

Final thoughts.
Locked and loaded at this stage in the Warne Dawgs. He’ll be priced at a bit over $300K and therefore looks to be one of those mid-priced keeper dudes that will be a fairly safe bet.

  1. High on my priority list

  2. correct me if im wrong but isn’t he in the light duties training group atm.

  3. i belive he is just starting to get back into it. From reports from the richmond board he is going well.

  4. dangerous to pick a guy who has had a restricted preseason in my opinion. fitness base might not be there.

  5. Im playing the mid priced player tactic this year…i guess he is locked and loaded for me! which is annoying because there is alot of other decent players like this…..wish he wasnt a midfielder!

  6. His preseason has been restricted on the back of overworking last preseason. in 2008 he played 15 games on the back of no preseason at all.

  7. Not for me. he’s not bargain price and IMO he is overrated and will be a bottom end keeper at best (90ish)

  8. im goin one of cotch,ebert,ward…..not convinced about cotchins durability yet.would need good nab form to convince me to pick him.

  9. Think there’s better than cotchin around IMO.Anyone have an opinion on L.Henderson pick no 8 in 2007 draft should be around $220 as a fwd/bck at new club carlton

  10. changed my mind think cotchin might be worth having lol

  11. Im not sure. Maybe he will be an Andrew Walker always injured?

  12. In the past two seasons Cotchin has had limited game time so it will be interesting to see how much time he’s given now. Hes a tempting pick but his injuries are a big put of, i have no doubt that this kid has potential to get huge numbers its just whether or not his body can hold up. Its either cotch or swift for me atm…leaning towards swift
