51358017Name: Bryce Gibbs

Position: Midfielder
2009 Average/Games: 106.95/22
Predicted 2010 Average: 112

Deck of DT Rating: King of Hearts

Why should I pick him?
I called it very early in the pre season last year. I said Bryce is my boy, and get him in your team NOW. For all those that followed my hot tip, well done, you selected a gun that played in 22 games with the 8th best average overall. I knew he went well but I didn’t realise he was in a class that elite. Obviously, Bryce will never be as big a bargain as he was last year, however he is still a great purchase as a premium. Over the last three years his average has gone from 58 to 87 and now to a whopping 107 which I believe is only the beginning. Although Bryce is so good, opposition teams can not go past tagging inside specialist Chris Judd and goal kicking midfielder Marc Murphy, usually leaving Gibbs free to roam the back flanks as a quarterback. I also think he will almost double his 2009 goal kicking to 30ish in the absense of Brendan Fevola.

Why shouldn’t I pick him?
With increased responsibility in the midfield and pressure to push forward, Bryce will miss out on a bit of kick to kick in the backline. He will have far less room to work with this year and other clubs are starting to realise he needs to be respected. At times, Bryce is also called on to run with star opposition players such as Chad Cornes and Adam Goodes. Although this did not have a negative impact on his scores last year, it is a little scary.

Final thoughts.
He is my boy, so I’ll be on him for sure. He is going to be very expensive but i think this year he has real captain potential which is what I want for the boys with the big price tags. I think he is only going to grow, throw in the fact he had three scores over 140 last year… SOLD!

  1. would be a good pick up. could average 115+ at his best and is very consistent

  2. I had this guy locked in as my first player for 2009 even before the final siren of 2008, was gonna be a steal and proved to be.

Seriously contemplating him again this year, has a definite upside. Just hope he is a little more consistent with the 100+ scores, which if you are going to want to put him as captain, you are going to want. He has scored 100+ 32% of the time in his career and in 2009, he scored it in 13 of his 23 games (56.5%).

He had a lean patch between rounds 9 and 17 where he only scored more than 100 twice and averaged 95 (thanks to a big 140 for boosting that). But this was compensated for over the whole season with averages of 115 (between rounds 18 and 22) and 115 (between rounds 1 and 8).

Bit disappointing that his 56 in the Elimination Final won’t be factored into his price for next year as that would have reduced his price by ~$10,000

    • Will definitely be one of my first picks next year. Thats very interesting you bring up hes only scored 100+ 56.5% of the time this year. Hopefully he will be able to bring some more consistency to his DT score because i am giving him some serious consideration for that Captaincy of my initial squad.

  3. I had him from the start last year and after all my mates bagging me about my decision i had the last laugh : )
Not sure about him this year though as i don’t think he will have the same role? He may be one i swoop on when he drops a bit in price.
I think this year you really need to think hard about the premium mids you have from the start and he’ll come into serious consideration once again.

  4. Im not to sure on Gibbsy, Ive had him the last 3 years and he’s been great for me but im not sure he will get all that better.

He should average about 110 next year but I would wait and see how the blues go in the NAB Cup games without Fev and what role Gibbs is playing.

IMO he could be a great pick up at about round 8 when his price mite have dropped a bit and the blues would of hopefully found out how to work without Fev.

Just quickly remember the Western Bulldogs versus Carlton last year, when the blues kicked 21.7 to the bulldogs 13.12 and Fev only kicked 3 goals, this is a great example of how we can work without the big man.

Overall Gibbs is a real chance of being in my team sometime next year but I’m not to sure at the start of the year.

  5. would mac murphy be a better option the gibbs due to his price ect.?

    • It really counts which role they play next year. Gibbs was usually roaming in the HB area picking up the cheap kicks while Marc Murphy pushed up near the HF area and managed to kick alot of goals. I can see both improving next year but i think Bryce Gibbs is the more naturally DTer. Having a look at his stats he is a very consistent player, his lowest score being 75 from last season, but if you are going to get him then he would have to be a captain option and he scored 100+ 50% of the time in 2009 which isnt great for a priced so high.

      • im not sure about having GAJ next year because I dont see much improvement and if anything he would probably decrease his average. a handy upgrade option at a cheaper price would be more realistic. Im looking at gibbs and selwood as the captain and vice captain options but it is risky if gibbs only got 100s 50% of the time.

        • I was actually talking about Marc Murphy, he scored 100+ 50% of the time in 2009. Bryce wasnt much better though with 56%. I was also looking at Gibbs and Selwood for my two premium options in my initial squad, because i can see both of them stepping their game up further yet again. But they are not certain captain choices compared to players such as Bartel, Ablett or Swan who are near that price range. There are definitely going to be some tough decisions regarding the premium options next year.

          • clonkers – marc murphy is supposedly injured atm. interupted pre-season, and he said in an interview that he probably will play round 1, but they will limit hes TOG and maybe put him up forward more ofter for the first 5 rounds. not good for dream team…but should be a good pickup mid-season when he will be dirt cheap!
gibbs=gun. but i think that he is a little overpriced.
i prefer the likes of bartel (not being biased. even tho im a cats supporter – bartel is still an awesome dt captain)

  6. well then will betts try to kick more goals seeing fevs gone. who would be going to kick goals from the blues a bit off topic i know though

  7. I think betts will try but he wont increase his goal average by alot basically because he is in that crumbing forward. Im not a blues supporter but aren’t they going to be using henderson in the forward line to replace Fevola.

    • that’s what I believe will happen but Waite is also an option as well as Sentanta O’Halphin

Ratten also talked about playing Judd up at FF a bit next year as well instead of resting him on the bench

  8. Mmmm……I cleaned up on him last yr and i feel that i owe him some loyalty after selecting him pick number one. I like watching him play so that helps. I want two of hayes, selwood and gibbs in my midfield and i think i will do the old coin flip to split them!

  9. No offense roy but he was an obvious choice not sure about this year.Anyone like the look of P.Dangerfield or is that an obvious one aswell

  10. First lock in!! With murphy n judd strugglin at start of year he will be the focal point!! Will only get stronger!!
