Which AFL Draftees do we want in our 2010 Dream Teams?
The NAB AFL Draft was the event that all serious Dream Team coaches would have taken a bit of interest in. We were able to see where these AFL hopefuls end up… and now we can decide whether they will be a chance for our 2010 AFL Dream Teams.

Let’s have a look at the draftees that have caught our DT eye.
Great place to start are the first two draft picks that went to Melbourne, Tom Scully and Jack Trengove. Both of these blokes will be around $150K+ (depending on the whole magic number thing next year), but will be worth it as they’re both very likely to play round one. Scully is likely to be named as a midfielder, and hopefully Trengove will slot in as a forward, but could be just a midfielder. I see Scully as a bit of a Judd-type player. Hard ball, plenty of handballs. But at least he is a disposal winner – averaged 26 in the TAC Cup. Trengove is named up as a bit of a leader which should help with that Round 1 debut. He also loves a kick and a tackle. Very good Dream Teaming.
How about we skip to the number four pick, Anthony Morabito, who went to the Dockers. Mark my words, this bloke will be 2010’s Daniel Rich. Well, maybe not as good or set the world on fire with DT scores… but he should go alright. Tall, mature body. Built for being as good Dream Team rookie option.
Hopefully with a new coach, North Melbourne can be a player of rookies more and more. The Junk Yard Dog even played a few last year… so hopefully the club is ready to look after us DT coaches. Anyway, Ben Cunnington is a MID/FWD who will touch the ball a heap and kick goals along with it. Pretty much what we want for a first yearer.
DT coaches love Ryan O’Keefe, and what we can hope for is Port’s Andrew Moore can be just as good. Should have an opportunity to take a ‘forward’ spot at the Power, and has the DT numbers to warrant a selection in your team next year. Keep your fingers crossed that Choco feels the same way.
Another Port bloke is Jasper McMillan-Pittard. He’s that DT slut on the back flank. Andrew Mackie like – when he is actually good. The only problem is that he is a bit of a skinny little dude.
Down at pick 30, the Magpies got what they wanted – as usual – and drafted Luke Ball. More will be on the website soon about him… but this bloke has plenty of upside, I just don’t know if he can achieve all of that upside at Collingwood.
There were a few other recycled players… keep an eye on Simon Buckley (Collingwood) who will be hugely under priced, given an opportunity. Jesse W Smith (St Kilda) is someone to watch as long as his body is alright. Please don’t think that Matt Maguire is a chance to be a Dream Teamer now he is at Brisbane. Umm… he isn’t!
Well… there are a few players I cast my eye over and thought could be some options early on. But to be honest, I know sweet eff-all. Who knows what is going to happen.
Find yourself some gems by clicking on player profiles from this list on the AFL website. Let us know who caught your eye!

Morabito – locked and loaded. Has been likened to Adam Goodes and when he was asked who he thought he best resembled, he said Brett Deledio.
Scully and Trengove are near certainties, just depends as it is looking like a lot of midfield rookies so gonna have to be picky and choosy.
Cunnington looks the goods too, very interested.
Kane Lucas I think would have more of a chance at other teams with less midfield talent than Carlton, maybe not 2010, but 2011.
Lewis Jetta is worth looking at down in Sydney
Luke Tascott for Melbourne should be listed as a forward and there are massive wraps on him out of Adelaide, certainly keeping an eye on him
Koby Stevens went later than a lot of people expected so interested to see if he gets opportunites but with people coming back from injury at WC, not sure how many spots are up for grabs, not many.
Dustin Martin would have to be a chance to play regular ball at Richmond.
The only recycled player I am looking at from this draft (no not Ball, not at Collingwood anyway) is Maguire, depending on price. No, he’s not a DTer but if AND ONLY IF, he is at rookie prices, I’m certainly interested in taking him just to make some coin as he will be a regular if he has overcome his leg injury.
I too would look at Maguire if he was rookie priced… to be a heartbeat on my bench, however… I really doubt he would be rookie priced. Highly unlikely. Should be under $150K though.
He averaged 33 from 4 games in 2008 and was priced at $145,300 in 2009 which he obviously didn’t play any games in. Not 100% sure whether or not he’ll get a 20% or 40% reduction in price for playing less than 5 games or so because they might not say that it was injury related. If they class it as just not getting picked (but was available) then would probably be priced on an average of 33
Luke Tapscott could be one who is ready to roll Round 1, he could possibly be listed as a forward, as well…
Stock up on Dees young guns!
Could come in handy for people

I think Sheppard could also be a chance to play games if WC decide to try and push Hurn more into the midfield this season
First of all I would like to talk about Cunnington- This guy excites me every time I look at him, when he was up on stage with the other top ten picks, you could just see how much muscle he has on him already. Already compared to Adam Simpson and supposed to be his replacement, expect him to get plenty of time in the middle next year.
Bastinac- Him and Scully played in the same team and thier coach rated them just as good as each other at times, but Scully obviously got more attention and went number 1. Bastinac slipped to pick 21 and he will probly be at basic price so if he has a full preseason and is named round 1, lock him in.
Morabito- As it say above, a genuine DTer and has been locked into my side for a while now.
Martin- Looks alrite, watch his preseason
Lucas- With all the midfielders that the blues have, dont expect him to get much game time in the middle, he will probly play up fwd more, HFF.
Black- Was supposed to go the blues at #12 but slipped to #25 for the roos, will be in the side most of the yr u would think and could be a decent bench player
Also ones to watch for if they get rookie listed next year and Brayden O’Hara and Matthew Panos, Panos was an AA who didnt get picked and could be worth a run. I love watching O’Hara play at the doggies in the SANFL and he reminds me a bit of Stewie Dew (minus the weight), someone with a powerful left footer who can change the game just like that
Oh and Sheppard went at the lucky number 7 pick, which in case u didnt know, has been the Rising Star winner for the last 3 years, so watch out just in case.
His name suggests he’ll be the greatest backman of all time, half Gadget and half Ugly Mick, but Dustin Martin might have to settle for being an average-to-good DT midfield rookie.
Thank you to the Dees for taking Trengrove second and not first, saving us a couple of DT dollars. It looks as though he’s more ready to go from the outset than Scully.
A good crop on the way. It must be if we’re talking DT in November.
We are looking forward to Chook’s Rooks! The highlight of the week for me… and an obvious highlight of the pre-season! They’ve just hatched and ready to build into some little cash cows for us!
I heard Jack Trengove on the radio today talking about how he hates it when people put that R into his name … mm?
Hehe… touche. All fixed now!
Can’t have Trengove not wanting to do his bit for DT next year.
Lets take them both out and call him Tengove
10grove.
Grover
Morabito, Cunnington and Trengove are the 3 that are locks for me
does anyone have a clue which may be named down back? Talia might be a back option? he’s got the blonde highlights to fit into the crows structure
Perhaps, but i think Phil Davis would be a smarter option at this point.
Melksham is locked in. As usual not liking any of the back rookies.
Gents
No point locking them in if they don’t play until rounds 12 or 18. Take whichever rookie you can get that is playing first round and is likely to get TOG is my thought.
so Morabito a lock forward line bench perhaps?
Scully or Trengove or would you pick both up?
who would be some cheap players due to Injury change of clubs ect. would fevs numbers improve at brissy. would you go with X Clakre? who is the look a like to Rich?
and which draftee would get early games
Obviously only my thoughts but to answer your questions, I reckon:
so Morabito a lock forward line bench perhaps?
Morabito has the body to play straight up and suits the Dockers style of game. Plus its the Dockers and Harvey likes playing the youngsters. I think he’ll be classed as a Mid though, not a Fwd.
Scully or Trengove or would you pick both up?
In an ideal world both, but there are a plethora of midfield rookies this year that are going to get games. I’m leaning towards Trengove myself, little cheaper and 8kg’s heavier (only 3cm taller), little more built to withstand AFL straight away.
who would be some cheap players due to Injury change of clubs ect. would fevs numbers improve at brissy.
Change of club doesn’t reduce a players price. As for cheap players because of injury, Maguire, Warnock, Palmer, Hille, Waters, Wona. I don’t think Fev’s numbers will increase, can you see him kicking as many goals as the last couple of years with Brown in the forward line also? I can’t. Plus Fevola is too inconsistent for DT for my liking.
would you go with X Clakre? who is the look a like to Rich?
No X Clarke for me. I don’t think there is a standout player who will come in and have the same AFL impact as Rich this year, well not that I know of yet. However, I think Morabito could score very well this year for Freo.
and which draftee would get early games
Morabito, Martin, Scully, Trengove, Tascott, Melksham, Cunnington
Why is everyone so in love with Morabito? My understanding was that he is not a prolific ball winner..
He averaged 14 possessions, 3 marks and 1.1 in 10 games for Peel this year. Kick:Handball Ratio of 0.71.
16 disposals, 3 marks and 1.1 in the U18 Championships this year too.
Not an absolute ball magnet but gonna play consistent ball at Freo this year, assuming no injuries.
Well playing for Fremantle is an obvious attraction given their recent youth playing history, but last year showed you do not have to pay premium price for rookie midfielders with the likes of Sidebottom and Ziebell nicely complementing Rich. Also there were the even cheaper options of Swift, Robinson, Jetta, Beams and co.
I guess it just depends on how many rookies you are going to play, the more of the newest draftees with dual positions the better, because pretty much the entire top 10 could potentially be listed as midfielders (bar Butcher).
Although if they are all midfielders that might increase the variety in teams..
I think the top five will be named as mids only, then 6-9 will be a mixture of positions. Shephard def, Rohan & Butcher fwds. Moore could be a fwd/mid
I’m with Jerry Kewell on this one. There are plenty of better midfield options in mo opinion.
If Trengove is named as a forward, I expect every single team to have him…
Cause of no 17 year olds, there will be more kids ready to go 2010.
Stock up dees kids and Lock it in. Scully in the centre and Trengove and Tapscott in the forwards.
word on the street is that us eagles will be feeding the ball to sheppard to get it out of the backline apparently hes going to be the eagles ‘Quarter back’ deffs look at getting on him in 2010 read that in the west australian but ill check out training at some point to see what hes up to
Stevens is apparently recovering from OP still which is why he was selected so late so he probably wont get a game till at least round 4
Id also advise people to get on this weedon guy looks like he is going to be getting a lot of game time as a crumbing fwd should slot in well as one of your fwd bench players if you like the smell of those 86k players
look for Josh kennedy (both swans and eagles) to have massive years i will be wearing my number 17 jersey with pride next year
Beau Waters anyone? not sure if you have seen his pre season photos but hes the new ben cousins over here in the west
ripped as a mo fo
also travis colyer will be a good 86k’er for the bombers went to school with the bloke and hes a dead set superstar great work rate the dons are lucky to have him really…REALLY
i also like the look of cunnington getting fed the ball from swallow and anthony looks like the roos are starting to build a respectable midfield again id also expect people to lock in ziebs again this year as your 6th fwd he should still be pretty cheap
look at Mitch Duncan to be the simon hogan of 2010 he will be a star but will get shit all game time
far out i really need dreamteam back
In the Sunday Times today, Woosha was saying that he is looking at playing Sheppard round 1, just needs to show in the NAB that he can handle the pace, which shouldn’t be a problem.
Paul Roos was also quoted as saying that Jetta should start Round 1 for the Swans.
Sydney coach Paul Roos says the gap between TAC Cup and AFL is massive and No.6 draft pick Gary Rohan can forget about making his debut for the Swans in 2010.
“I’d be staggered if he played senior footy next year,” Roos told AAP on Friday after returning from the national draft in Melbourne.
Roos is hopeful Jetta, Sydney’s second selection and No.14 pick overall, can play AFL next year.
“He has got some special talents. But he’s still very light at 69 kilograms,” Roos said of the 20-year-old.
Rohan might hit the gym, Jetta may get games.
From the Sunday Times – WA
Roos said the Swan Districts forward could play in the opening rounds of next season, but warned he was not a replacement for recently retired sharpshooter Michael O’Loughlin.
Roos expects Jetta to slot into his senior team straight away.
“I think we can look at that given that he’s played senior footy,” the 2005 premiership coach said.
“He’s certainly more of a chance than the other kids that you take.”
“There’s no doubt that because he’s played against senior bodies and he’s smart enough he’s ready.”
“Most of the kids you take you don’t expect them to be ready straight away. Lewis is different at 20.”
i saw trengrove rack it up in the prelim final against glenelg this year, an absolute star, hitting teammates lace out on both feet. has a readymade body for afl, having played the last half of the year in the sturt seniors. barring an injury in the pre season, he is a lock for round 1, even more so than scully.
yeh…. but he plays for melbourne.
that should mean 22 games for him. how about the 209cm ruckman i forgot his name got drafted to the dees
Max Gawn? coming off a Knee injury and he’s a weed
Sheappard is the question. Back rookies are hard, i like that im hearing he will play round 1 but, at pick 7 he could be 134k. There are so many options at 200k it isn’t funny
Waters,Kennelly,Nash,Broadbent,Ladson,Buckley. Are you better off with paying the 60k and getting a seasoned player? I wontder ig Simon Buckley is a ready made 22 player now Marty Clarke and Shannon Cox are gone.
I reckon nick suban is also a lock in the backline, he started to show me the end of last yr he has class and is pretty cheap!
Agreed !
get on sheppard and ride the gravy train
i like the look of the new lions boy Callum Bartlett, looks like a classy type midfielder. Dont stock up your midfield to much with rookies eeing that players like rhys palmer will be back and at 200k, you cant go wrong.i would expect a cheap forward line this year. Ziebell a must with 2 following rookies. All i can say is with so many starters and so many cheepies this is gonna be an exciting year.
Last year was devastating with all the injuries but now its amazing. The only downside was richo retiring. He wouldve been perfect 4 next yr
A quick look through the Fanfooty Planner at cheap midfielders for next year or ones that look to have some good upside. What are peoples thoughts?
Rhys Palmer $293800
Dayne Beams $353000
Daniel Rich $358400
Trent Cotchin $313300
Hamish Hartlett $305100
Jack Ziebell $302200
Daniel Kerr $287400
Stephen Hill $269800
Patrick Dangerfield $244400
Palmer – lock, if he has a strong pre season
Beams – no upside
Rich – possible lock, not sure if he will improve his numbers though
Cotchin – possible lock, if he has a strong pre season
Hartlett – no upside
Ziebell – Dangerield is better value
Kerr – injuries, suspensions
Hill – no upside
Dangerfield – this will be his breakout year
I beg to differ on a couple of those that you see as not having any upside, especially hamish hartlett if he is named as a back. Could easily improve his average if he is placed in the mids and we know how hard it is to find decent backmen in this game.
I can’t see Hartlett averaging much more than the 65 he averaged this year, maybe 75 at the most and i don’t think he will be named as a back either as he is a midfielder. There are better options around or under his price and he’s only played 11 AFL games. I think he’s still 12 months off having a break out year.
I can’t see Beams averaging much more either. With Ball being there now he will probably get less time in the midfield.
And theres no way i would have Spud Hill in my side, but if ur a fan of guys who score below 50 on a regular basis then he’s ur man.
Ball will limit Beams TOG.`
Ball won’t limit Beam’s time on ground, one is an in and under midfielder while the other is an outside running mid. Plus, Collingwood use a massive rotation policy, all their mids are constantly rotated.
Take a look at the round 21 Fantasy Freako Rave at a selection of Collingwood mids TOG’s.
Swan – 81%
Didak – 81%
Davis – 81%
Pendlebury – 72%
Beams – 68%
These from what I understand are yearly averages (which after looking back at a selection of the Rave’s throughout the year looks to be correct).
Beams was already used sparingly in his first year compared to other mids, I’d be expecting to see his TOG go up by 5-8%. Especially considering Arizona Camp news is that Beams and Sidebottom are winning on the running and endurance tests over there.
I just think its a bit harsh to say that they dont have any upside what so ever. i know its a matter of opinion especially from a supporters view, cause i would take jack ziebell over dangerfield anyday and im sure you would do the opposite. But if any of those players mentioned increase their time on ground, had a change of position or where a certainty to play 22 games( barring injury), then i would think that they would have a little bit of upside to them. Sure it may not be enough to warrant a selection in yours or my DT but at least they could be showing some promising signs for the next season or the seasons after that.
How does Hill have no upside? He’s one of the most talented players in the AFL and has put on 5kg this pre-season already. I’d say Suban would be the better option dor DT this year though
Also i like the look of the price tag Clinton Young could have next year. If he’s around the $250k he would be a bargain, he averaged 84.5 in ‘08 but his numbers suffered this year through injury.
yeah same here mate, averaged pretty well in 08 and the hawks will be bak this yr, so for me he’s better value than Palmer to be honest.
Also in the backlines Beau Waters and Mitch Farmer could be ones to look at, Waters has buffed up a lot and Farmer is dirt cheap and will play a ton at the tigers
Oh and another one to look at would be Tom Swift, pretty cheap and could average around 90-100
Swift is a good call, in fact I expect a big improvement from a lot of the eagles. Does anyone think that Hardwick will make a difference to Tiges in 1st year? DT wise of course
I would have thought Hartlett, Ziebell and Dangerfield would all have more upside than RIch.
I could see all players averaging similar and they are all a lot cheaper than Rich
I agree with you there morts, Rich was a very good player to have this season but he seems to be more of a supercoach player with his excellent disposal. he still will be useful for DT but those you have mentioned are cheaper and have the ability to average the same if not more than Rich.
plus he will have to get a tag this yr, teams cannot afford to let his awesome foot skills to be the main inside fifty player, imagine him delivering to fev…..bad news!
Jack Ziebell $302200 i thought he would be cheaper then that this year? sees a starter in my team(on the bench)
stepehn hill was alright last year
Just went through the average stats for the TAC Cup Championships 2009 and decided to have alook at the DT scoring potential with some of the players in the top 25 draft picks(who are DT related and will hopefully get some games).
So here are the results, represented by the amount of points DT wise for each statistic:
Kicks HB Mrks Tks Gls Pnts Average per game
Trengove 43.2 16.8 12.6 12 6 0.2 90.8

Sheppard 24.6 24.4 10.8 3.2 0 0 53.8
Hope its helpful, i might have a look at the whole TAC CUP and find out some averages as well. And if anyone wants me to look up a player just ask cause i dont mind.
Lol the stats didnt come out as expected oh well
i’ll just give you the averages for each player if you cant understand the post above
Trengove 90.8
Cunnington 89
Scully 87.2
Tapscott 87.2
Lucas 87
Martin 80
Koby Stevens 79.6
Bastinac 67
Morabito 66.6
Melksham 65.6
Sheppard 53.8
Good post Clonks.
Have to bear in mind that WA boys like Mora, Sheppard, Lucas have been playing WAFL against men, as opposed to 17 year olds.
Yea but this was the TAC Cup so it was all the under 18 boys. if you want to know how they went in the WAFL check the other thread below this on the main page.
i mean the NAB under 18 championships, not TAC CUP.. silly me
What are they doing in Crowland ??
Two players already down for the 2010 season
http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/87798/default.aspx
Yea i saw that as well. Unlucky for Otten looked a very promising player and DT type for next season. Hope everything goes well in his recovery.
this is terrible news for the crows. otten is such a promising young talent. it will be a shame for him to miss winning the premiership if in fact crows win it in 2010.
Lock in Davis or possibly Talia. I dont know who will take his spot but likely one of them. At least Otten will be dirt cheap in 2011 but that will be the hell year for DT with GC coming in.
I would have Davis in my team, even if Otten wasn’t out for the year, I’ll be very surprised if Davis doesn’t play next year.
Prospectus is out!!! Get your copy now!!!

umm does anyone no if Morabito is going to be a regular starter at Freo this year. Ive also heard good things about WC youngster Luke Shuey, anyone no about him?
