Essendon vs Brisbane… Who to watch!
The worst thing about writing up these things is that the teams aren’t officially announced until just before the game… like last night, Steele Sidebottom was one to watch – but they didn’t pick him! Oh well… here are some names of interest:
Essendon Bombers: After last week’s magnificent performance, I an keeping my eyes firmly placed on Hayden Skipworth (MID/FWD, $196,600). For that price, and his 99 last week, he is in the Warne Dawgs – and plenty of other DT’s I would imagine. Adam McPhee (FWD/DEF, $332,100) always excites me! And in DT this year, could prove to be a bargain. All of the signs point to him having a bigger year than ‘08 – plenty of cheap DT stats and getting yourself back to where us coaches loved you heaps! Scott Gumbleton (FWD, $86,600) is a basement priced player that has been attracting plenty of attention. He needs these NAB Cup games to get himself all happening for the big time… in which he should play from Round 1 onwards. Maybe it could be take two for David Zaharakis (MID, $86,600) and get a chance to show his wares on the Telstra Dome. Also, Scott Lucas (FWD, $222,800) has the mega discount because of injury… he will definately be a value adder, but will his body hold up?
Brisbane Lions: All eyes will be on Daniel Rich (MID, $126,600) again. Very promising last week and expect the same again – maybe with extra confidence. Cement him in for Round 1! Bradd Dalziell (MID, $420,300) is mega expensive but my god is he a DTer! He could possibly be one of the greatest DT players in 5 years time… watch out Jimbob Bartel! A lot of people may have been turned off by Jed Adcock (BAC/MID, $313,800) in his last outing – especially when he looks to be a bargain in the backline. We want him to capture that form of a couple of years ago… get loose! Noone will touch Albert Proud (MID, $223,800) but we can see what could have been last year, after we all locked him in following a stellar NAB Cup campaign. Oh and don’t forget my boy – Jared Brennan (FWD/MID, $373,700).

skipworth is on my radar atm. really looking forward to see if rich can get pleny of the ball,playing in the wafl last year only averaged around 69 and now his playing with the big boys it could go one of two ways – struggles and only gets 10-12 touches a game or with blokes like black and power in the guts with him and a new coach like vossy “a great hard nut inside player like rich” he could get even more of it, hope he does.also looking out for j.mcdonald. hope he gets loose off half back for me.
Just in case anybody in the whole od the DT world thought Monty from fanfooty knew anything more than the casual footy observer about AFL football he has still not included Ben Cousins in the new version of AFL teams for Rd 1. He knows nothing, can design and run a website yes, AFL football knowledge = zero. Fail Monty, epic fail.

It’s a real pity that Dalziell started late last year, would be an awesome pickup for the start of this year as a rookie.
And Jason, i tend to agree with Monty, i would be surprised if Cousins plays round one. Just my opinion though. At least Monty gave his reasons why he thinks cousins wont play. All you have done is called him a twat. Makes you look like a bit of a tool really.

He looks too heavy and slow for today’s game and had a few soft touches and a few flashes of the old magic but still doesn’t look quite up to AFL level.

I’m with you Jason… Cousins looked good and worked his ass off. I don’t think Monty is too bad though, but I think he misunderstands why Cousins was having a spew last night. For me that was a great sign. He was definitely working super hard. Way better than I expected after 18 months out of the game.
But yeah… I think Monty just made a bad call on Cousins a few weeks ago and now his pride is a bit wounded because not only will Cousins play Round 1, but he’s even playing NAB Cup haha. So Monty’s just clutching at straws “AW NAW HE WON’T PLAY DID YOU SEE HIM SPEWING?”. Joel Corey regularly has a chunder between quarters but would that keep him out of your DT?
Oh and thanks Vin for the heads up last night on the 3.25 for Cousins not to kick a goal. I returned like 175 bucks from that so yeah good shit son.

Again, i concur, this time with Avan! I was at the match last night with a fellow Richmond supporter, and I thought that Vickery looked pretty good for his first game, and my mate thought is was a fumbling dump truck! Its amazing how when we have exactly the same amount of loyalty and are sitting side by side and having the same view of the ground that we had two opposite opinions of what happened! Just like the Maxwell bump! That polarised a few!
One last thing…..unless Cuz gets injured between now and round 1, He is a 100% starter! Like you cant have the Judd Cousins Show for Round 1! Surely he has to get a game before Polo, King, Pettifer etc!
Did anyone else notice at the start of the game that it looked like the other tigers were avoiding giving him the ball? He was running to better positions than they were passing too and no one was on him!
Tonight I will be watching Skippie and Lucas (even though at this stage I’m contemplating putting in Cloke for Lucas in my team because I have some spare cash). Also looking at Gumbie.
From a Lions point of view, I’m waiting to see Rich again and also a roughie, Collier in the backline. He is cheap as chips and looks like he could return reasonable numbers if Vossy sticks with him.
Interesting pick up Leigh, I didn’t notice but I might watch the first half again. I did see a lot of solidarity when he hit the bench through the second half so whatever bias there might have been, I’d be inclined to think it was short lived.
I thought the guy was running hard and showed superior talent, but I didn’t think he looked fit enough to run a full game out, not without long stretches on the bench.
I don’t buy it that last night he ran himself into the spew. Even though he spews semi-often, he had been on the bench for a while and it was only as he returned to the field that it came up. I reckon he just drank too much water for his own good, and again, a sign he hasn’t got full fitness yet..

Slightly off topic – over here in the west, Mark Harvey has said Ballantyne will really struggle to be right for round 1 after his wrist op. He’ll probably be right for round 3 but will play WAFL for 2 weeks to get some touch, which means round 5 debut. So presuming you have him, do you leave him in or trade him in?

Monty does a great job. Calling him a “twit” and saying that he has zero football knowledge just makes you sound childish. I would expect a university student (i am one) like youself to be a more hospitable human being – not the rude and obnoxious person you make yourself out to be. People are allowed to have opinions and whether you agree with them or not doesn’t give you the right to put them down or think that you are superior.
I thought Cousins did look very underdone, yet there were a few glimpses of class that suggests he has the potential to return to his best soon enough. And yes, i believe he will play R1 too.

Jason – personally, if I was a big Cousins DT fan like you, I would have posted agreeing with Monty, turned people off him, and jumped on myself.
My opinion is that Richmond have invested too much in recruiting Cousins for him to be running around in the VFL.
Pulls a hammy in the AFL and people will say it was worth the risk. Pulls a hammy in the VFL and he is the worst recruit of all time.
Also, lets be realistic – half fit Cousins is a better player than half of the Richmond midfield.
i think a lot of people r still forgetting that there are still 4 weeks before the season starts. thats a long time for cousins to build up on his fitness

Monty is only guess-timating the round 1 teams.
Given your current credentials (zero) his guess has far more weight than yours.

I play the game at a decent standard, I know the game. Monty doesn’t do those things, he internet speculates and not played the game at all (that I know). Hence I am much more credentialled to make a more informed decision IMO of course. You are free to have a different opinion, I have no issue with that, you seem to but thats your right.

Jason – the problem is not that you are of the opinion that Cousins will play round 1, it is that you discredit monty, saying he has no AFL football knowledge, and you have gone further to state that to your knowledge monty hasn’t played the game at a decent standard and does not know the game.
It strikes me that what you don’t know, yet choose to speculate on is far greater than what monty doesn’t know about AFL football.
You say you have a job and therefore don’t have the time to run a website concerning AFL football… wouldn’t the fact monty does have the time to run his site, and spends time investigating and researching for it, suggest that he may have equal or greater knowledge than your opinion based on watching 1 pre-season game?
Oh I forgot, you have ‘inside knowledge’. In my opinion Cousins will very likely play, but everyone is just speculating – Unless you are a member of the Richmond coaching staff. Guess work is great and fun this time of year, name calling and slander aren’t.

Fellas, fellas. Whilst I was watching the Essendon v Brisbane tonight, I was counting the marks that weren’t counted (because of the kick backwards rule) towards some of the players I was looking out for. You can add and extra 3 marks to Adam Mcphee’s stats. Add an extra 4 marks to Joshy Drummond.
Cousins, Love him, imaging how good he would have been at his peak if he was not smashing the narc’s into him. Cousins also had concussion which can make you spew (I know that I don’t even have a degree). Who would have thunk it!
went to lions v ess game tonite lads, i can say without doubt i have locked in my 1st emerg ruck, big scotty clouston put on a masterfull display of skill,toughness and awareness of how to get the pill and how to dispose of it, Vossy must play him all year surely!
