NAB Cup: Who to watch… Week 3
We finally get to see the other eight teams this weekend with four matches across the country. As always, there are plenty of players that we want to have a look at to possibly chuck into our sides… read more for some of the players I’ll be watching over the weekend.
Carlton vs North Melbourne
Friday 20th February, 7:40 pm – Telstra Dome
Carlton Blues
- Mitch Robinson (MID, $86,600) – This bloke is one of the top junior DTers going about. He seems like he might be a long way down the pecking order at the Blues, but word is he has been having a fair dinkum crack and his ADHD is working in a positive way at the club.
- Chris Yarran (FWD, $130,600) – Could be one of the most popular rookies. We’re all hoping he will be Cyril Rioli like… would be nice to see if he is worthy of starting on our grounds.
- Shaun Grigg (MID, $265,300) – I don’t know why… but people have been mentioning him about the place?!
- Bryce Gibbs (MID, $387,300) – Third year break out year? I think he has been breaking a fair bit already, but I reckon Bryce is going to step up and be one of the big boys this year. 100+ average maybe?
North Melbourne Kangaroos
- Jack Ziebell (FWD/MID, $118,600) – Yep, we all want him to be good… but we need him to be exceptional so that the nutter and DT antichrist, Dean Laidley the friggen Junk Yard Dog picks him!
- Liam Anthony (MID, $86,600) – Another one of the mids that could hold down a nice cheap bench spot. Who knows? There are big wraps on him.
- Hamish McIntosh (RUC, $296,600) – Big Mac has proven to be a decent DTer. Had knee problems and scored well below his potential last year – mega rollercoaster ride… but I have faith to sit him in next to Coxy. I’m worried about his body and the whole North Melbourne ruck combo thing (Hale, Petrie… and with the way Laidley’s half witted brain works, probably Boomer Harvey).
Hawthorn vs Melbourne
Saturday 22st February, 4:10 pm – Aurora Stadium
Hawthorn Hawks
- Ryan Schoenmakers (FWD/DEF, $90,600) – One of the Hawks rookies. If he can get a game, slot him on your back bench. Don’t hold your breath on anything massive from him though!
- Mitch Thorp (FWD, $86,600) – Tassie boy, can play… hopefully he is over his injuries and can have a fair crack at making it in the bigtime! Always going to be hard at the Hawks!
- Ben McGlynn (FWD/MID, $274,500) – Cheap… and could step it up from his average of 77 last year. Just needs that spot in the 22.
Melbourne Demons
- Jack Grimes (DEF, $186,400) – Maybe that 7th back? But is he in the equation for the Dees?
- Nathan Jones (MID, $312,900) – He’s cheap, huh Vin?! Well, I’ll be watching him… and hoping that Calvin gets tempted by him again, considering he might score well without a tag and on the open Aurora Stadium!
- Brad Green (MID, $431,900) – Forever an under rated DTer. We all know he scores well, and he is pretty consistent. Maybe we should give him a shot?
Geelong vs Adelaide
Saturday 21st February, 7:10pm – Telstra Dome
Geelong Cats
- All of them… they are just brilliant DTers! But keep an eye on Simon Hogan (FWD, $86,600) who has been training the house down. Maybe a rookie option. Also, Joel Selwood (MID, $404,000)… like Bryce Gibbs, ready to rock and roll and be an elite player!
Adelaide Crows
- Myke Cook (MID, $86,600) – Watch this space!!
- Taylor Walker (FWD, $86,600) – The next Tony Modra?! Well LOCK him in boys!
- Nathan Bock (DEF, $372,900) – We love him… Roy more than others, but this bloke is a captain backline if you ever saw one. His consistancy has increased and should be a mid 80 type scorer for the year.
Sydney vs Port Adelaide
Sunday 22nd February, 3:40pm – Manuka Oval
Sydney Swans
- Rhyce Shaw (MID, $386,500) – Racks them up, but I’m not sure if Sydney will help him? Tackling Tit-ed has him locked into his side – he was his first picked! Haha… Sydney are playing in a DT hell hole… so, don’t expect mega scores.
- Mike Pyke (RUC, $75.300) – Canadian rugby union international player… at 25, if he can go alright, the Swans might have a little bargain here for us! But… that might be in 2010?!
- Darren Jolly (RUC, $329,400) – I’m very confident he’ll increase his average from 74. With Everitt gone, he’ll have the opportunity to do so. Could be a handy 2nd ruck.
- Patrick Veszpremi (FWD, $230,700) – Could slot into a few forward lines. Should increase in value and there were plenty of us who got hard over him last year. What will his 2009 role be… and will he be consistently in the 22?
Port Adelaide Power
- Chad Cornes (DEF/MID, $379,500) – Lock, lock…. LOCK! If he isn’t, then what are you doing?! Hopefully we’ll see a strong, fit and very keen Chad to make up for the heartache he cause so many of us in 2008 (even if Sydney are one of his bogey sides).
- Jason Davenport (MID, $86,600) – Plenty of talk about this bloke who came from Geelong. A running defender (so why the fuck isn’t he classified as that then!) who racks it up. Watch with interest!
- Hamish Hartlett (MID, $138,600) – The Power’s first draft pick. Expect big things… but will his ‘high draft price’ cost him the opportunity to make all the cash we want? Sounds like he could be a good DTer though.
Don’t forget our awesome competition to win a 2009 AFL Prospectus. Click here for details on how to enter!
(Sorry if some of these players aren’t playing or whatever… I’ve taken this from the squads announced on Thursday).

@ Damo
Kyle Cheney is an option as an 86k back.
scored 47 against Hawkthorn which is reasonable (14 disposals). Playing at Melbourne he may get a few opportunites more then some others.
I had Houli last year from Round 1, think I got him for about 190k or something. He played a number of roles last year. When he was freed up in the middle, he got up to 100DTs, but when he played as a defensive half back, he would get low low scores. He was a frustrating one, not sure what role Knights will play him this year. If he is a pure midfielder he would be a geat choice, but if he plays in the back half I don’t see him being consistently high scoring.
His highest four scores last year were 103 and 111, 96, 95 but after that his scores were 71, 62, 57, 56, 46, 37.
Hey guys. Which forward gun should I get if I have $519800 in the kitty? I already have Gia, Dids and Nathan G Brown and Richo and Lids in my mids.
Port Adelaide
Travis Boak (mid, $369,600) – 77 – Played well and looks like he could step up this year to an elite DTer as has been discussed.
Nathan Krakouer (fwd, $189,300) – 54 – Played in the midfield and racked up 14 possessions (13k, 1h) and looks like could be a cheap roughie for the forward line if he gets a consistent game.
Hamish Hartlett (mid, $138,600) – 32 – Thought he would score higher than this, 10 possessions, from a full game, not too sure about TOG though. PA seem to be ranting about this guy though and seems like he could be a starter in round 1.
Jason Davenport (mid, $86,600) – 43 – Scored well in half a game, was substituted on at half time. 12 possesions and a stunning goal at the end. This guy was a ball magnet for the Geelong Falcons, I’m hoping he gets a consistent game because he’s one that I want in my team. Lets see how he goes next week, hopefully a full game.
Wade Thompson (fwd, $88,300) – 66 – Very impressive game, pretty flashy and presented well for a small forward and capped off 11 possessions with 6 marks and 3 goals. This guy is rookie listed though so how does that affect his chances this year.
Sydney
Jesse White (rck, $137,500) – 41 – Played in defense for the first half on Tredrea and then moved to FF in the second half. Did some impressive things. However, wasn’t used in the ruck, so with Hall and O’Loughlin returning, where are they going to play this guy, if at all? At the moment hhe is my third ruck, so I am keeping an eye on the NAB Challenge games.
what do people here think about steve salopek for port at 415 is he worth the punt
nahh mate you could get someone like gibbs or selwood for less… i wouldn’t
plus injury prone :S
Hogan that is some damn shite DTing!!! 3 kicks and 16 handballs. Kick it you mag!
Someone needs to step in and tell the young fella that is not how its done.
Which of the following 3 is the best option? Leigh Fisher, Jack Grimes or Jesse Smith??
Neither, theres not guarantee any of them will get a regular game…
scott gumbleton
hayden skipworth
andrew raines
daniel cross
kane cornes
sam mitchel
adam goodes
good picks???
Brodie
I’ve got the first three players in my team.
As for the others, Cross and Kornes are great picks, Mitchell is also, I personally don’t think Goodes is that good a DT player. He’s not exceptionally high scoring.
Who would you pick first out of:
Judd, Gibbs, Pendlebury, C Knights, Boak?
And out of:
Pav, Riewoldt, Didak, J Brown?
Nathan I’d take Didak
and out of those mids
Boak costs the least,, and will likely average mid 90s
pendlebury is more expensive and will almost certainly score mid 90s
Judds history suggests his best and worst are far apart.. he can score as low as 40 and 120 max. id stay away just because of the brutal tag.
knights will average mid 80s but its hard to see him scoring any higher..
gibbs is a talent.. and will average 90+ he doesnt have a limit as to how high he could score but it wouldnt surprise me seeing him average 100+
i don’t necessarily agree that goodes isnt a good DT player. if he is hot he can average high 90’s. the main problem is finding that consistency
Huh? Two Morts? What the? Was sitting there thinking when did I write that? Then realised I didn’t.
Nathan
Depends on what you are looking for. J Brown is cheap, but for consistent high scores I would go Didak. Not sure how Pav is going to be used this year, Harvey seems to be throwing all his players into new positions, whats with Tarrant at CHB?
As for the Mids, Gibbs for sure. He was the first mid I picked this year, then followed by Swan and Selwood.
Problem being spuzzlord that he hasn’t been consistently hot since his final 6 games of 2007, where he averaged 115.5. However, if you look at the rest of that year he only averaged 74 over 17 games.
First half of 2008 he averaged a reasonable 88 but then the second half of the year he only average 70.
I want someone I can rely on week in week out to get me a good score, I can accept a shocker every now and then but I don’t ahve much confidence in Goodes to give me consistency.
When it comes to being a good footy player, there aren’t many going around better than him, thats for sure.
yeah i 100% agree with you morts, but im a sydney fan so ill probably put him in my team and hope he can be that consistent player again. hope being the operative word.
is anyone getting haselby and gamble?? wat about houlihan ??
i was on houlihan from the start but it seems lots of other people wanna jump on the band wagon now. there goes my secret weapon haha
Haselby will be the most overrated and picked player of the year, I cant see him doing a whole lot this year, i reckon he’ll average 60-70 max… hes just behind the pace of the young guys. Against a good team Haselby will be lost..
I’ve had Houlihan in my team for about a month now. I reckon he is a certainty to go well. Best thing is that he is a fwd and a back so is pretty easy to fit him in your side
wat do you think of my team

About 40 people are about to tell you that your rucks are rubbish – uber-rubbish.
hey brodie
….ur rucks are rubbish
The rucks are rubbish……..especially Meeson……HUGE dud.
hey fellas love my team
BUT three issues
Higgins/skipworth/lucas (fwd)
Hazelby (yay or nay)
Raines/malceski/drummond/grimes/j smith/petterd (def)
lol and two gambles as well!
which one do i get?
Did anyone watch the Richmond game, if so did coughlan play well?
that port player wade thompson looks a good rookie has pace and skill just not sure he will get enough of the ball what do you all think
Coughlan is injured, didn’t play. Went in for surgery a day or two before the game
how about sandilands for charman??
Fella’s
Opinion on Rohan Bail for Melbourne…
Is he going to get a game?? i didn’t watch him Vs Port though his stats don’t look to great…
Played with him, and the guy can run all day very fit very quick… 1 or 2 more games and he should be not just a great DTer though something very good to watch (in the way of his skills)
Opinions??
correction melbourne Vs hawks
Davenport will be a great bench player for the centres if you are like me and have spent up on the big guns and are relying on rookie bench players. He is well under rated because he came from Geelong and was well down the pecking order.
i have a private league so not to worried about giving my team out…
goddard cornes adcock urquhart raines hill trengrove (hill suban)
ablett corey mitchell gibbs palmer hartlett (rich davenport)
cox ottens spencer (anyone who gets named round one under 86K
Pav Delido matty-stokes dale-thomas j-riewoldt ziebell watts sidebottom gumbleton
What do you guys reckon is the better option?
Swan, Gibbs, Delideo
or
Cross, Hayes, Okeefe + about 25k
Medhurst.. THats a tuff one but i’d proberly go with the first option with the deciding factor bein that i personally think that Gibbs will be a GUN this year playin backwards of centre mopping up and launchin alot of carltons attacks.. But they are both good combo’s…
Medhurst. First option hands down. All three are going to be guns this year.
Medhurst, 1st option for sure. Are you talking Delideo as ctr or fwd? Go forward if you can & it will give you more options that way.
hey guys, just looking for a bit of imput on my team

Cox, Ottens, (Trengove, Pike)
Forwards
