Think it all comes down to his asking price. I’m certainly gonna take a gander and jump on the coke train if he gets some k’s into his legs in the NAB and shows some form. I don’t think I would have him as one of my key mids though, he could be a cash cow or the 6th mid like Houli was for me at the start of last year.
I would say the masses are going to choose Cuz – it is just too tempting for them not to…
So assuming the masses get him – you look at 4 scenarios that might result:
1. You pick him; He Fails (hammy/drug ban/etc)
2. You pick him; He Succeeds
3. You don’t pick him; He Fails
4. You don’t pick him; He Succeeds
So option 1+2 – you pick him:
Result 1: You lose; The masses lose = neutral outcome
Result 2: You win; The masses win = neutral outcome
So 2 neutral outcomes if you pick him
Option 2 – you don’t pick him
Result 3: You win; The masses lose = positive outcome
Result 4: You lose; The masses win = negative outcome
So depends what risk you want to take…
Betting on failure of Ben Cousins is a risky option. Maybe he wasn’t a gun in his personal life, but he was a total gun at footy.
With every club under the sun having a youth policy and the fact that he is 30y/o (this?/next? year) and clubs are still chasing him is a good sign of how good he was (and may still be).
Also if you bet against him you need to consider that he needs to fail early for you to gain an advantage. If he fails when he is $400k-$450k then he’s done his job because most people would be putting him in the ‘upgrade slots’ on their teams, not the keeper slots. If he turns into a keeper then that is just a bonus trade to use elsewhere.
Anyway, as Morts says – i’m going to watch the pre-season and if he looks good there i’m going to get him
Dan.
(slightly biased Eagles supporter)
Nice analysis Dan! I think the key will be, is he going to be the gun that we all think/hope he will be? NAB Cup/Challenge should tell us plenty about that… like with anyone! So here’s hoping! He will be heavily discounted so the price will be right! Think about when he made his comeback in ‘07 – that was mega… and was epic for the rest of the year too (minus the hammy issue). Like Monty said in his blog, the hammy is a BIG issue – but with risk there is the potential reward, and yes, because of the masses, the reward may not outweigh the risk!
Time will tell!!
Wow – wholey shit Dan, me and the Bundy bear reckon you JUST PICK HIM – Cuz is cool as
If Vin is picking him then that settles it for me. Not required cuz
Haselby looks like a better choice (and a cheaper choice) for me. Less risk of drugs/afl suspension, just as higher scoring potential.
ill be getting him for sure. c’moooon benny
My friend went to school with him, said that when he was in high school, Ben said to him something along the lines of “I’m going to get all my drug experimentation out of the way now [in high school] because when I’m an AFL footballer I won’t be able to do it”…
EPIC FAIL
Seeing as he is the inspiration behind my team name, Ill give him a crack (Pardon the pun!)
Haselby true that. I think Cousins might get a hamstring injury or something and not really accumulate the points.
Fantastic Leigh!
You should be proud of puns tho!
Yeah….was a little proud of the pun! Listening to SEN today, and there is a chance no club will pick him up now after his hair shaving stunt!
Yeah Hasleby is safer but I don’t think anything is wrong with picking both of them!
cuz, hasleby, mcglynn are all gunna be in my team :O
btw warnie i like the little countdown thingy
When Cuz got pulled up and arrested, it was directly out the front of my office window. Unfortunately I wasn’t at work that day, apparently half the office building went out and stood around watching it.
im going to get him. think he will be a good money maker im hoping he can do what stevens did for me this year.
I’ll be picking Cousins all day long if the price is right, looks like he could end up in Brissy with Black and Power, i can see him running a muck if he’s fit….
I’ll be taking him. I went to school with him and although it may not seem like it, he is pretty bright (unlike Michael Gardiner). Yeah he’s made bad choices off the field but he’s never tested positive.
If you think Benny will succed, there has to be a prett strong case for Brown dawg to be in your team too with the delivery from the lions midfield (as if he wasn’t a gun already).
I think we’ve got to see if he gets drafted first. It seems to change every day!
It’s a no from me. All teams have already ruled out drafting him on Saturday so it all comes down to the PSD.
With the quality of rookies this year I can’t see the point of paying 100k extra to upgrade Ziebell/Dangerfield/Sidebottom etc. to Cousins.
cousins to richmond fellas, im most likely gonna jump on
