Improvements for Dream Team in 2009
Haha… yeah, I know! The season finished two days ago and we’re already thinking about this! This isn’t a post about “pick up Daniel Rich, he will be a DT gun”. It’s about the things that could make AFL Dream Team better in 2009.
I am a massive believer that “if it aint broke, don’t fix it”, as most things with DT is that case. Like the scoring. It doesn’t need to change! We don’t need people saying “you should get one point for a spoil”. Bullshit. Or “goal assists should get you 5 points”. Crap! Play SuperCoach for all the things that make AFL Players ‘good’ players, not just the stat gathering blokes that we love!
Here are some suggestions for improvements to Dream Team that I would like to see in 2009.
- See all League Games “live” – that is, have a live league page where you can see current scores with players used, etc… if you are a fanatic like me, you are holding onto league results (especially in the last two weeks).
- The live scores page needs to be easier to look at – maybe grouped so you can easily see the difference between common and unique players.
- The individual player stats were awesome this year… but I wouldn’t mind the ‘official’ and accurate break evens recorded there. Scores sorted by opponent and from previous years. No guessing with the everchanging magic number and formula.
- Maybe a prize for the State Champions and the League with the best overall average.
Let us know some of your suggestions in the comments below. Who knows, Virtual Sports may listen!

hey xztatick, is that an official list? where did you get it from?
Nah that’s just a few who I think should be changed.
I think the point scoring is pretty much solid, although it would be nice to see spoils/smothers get at least a 1pt. I mean Sandilands 375 tap outs to opposition every week scored him points, why shouldn’t a desperate match saving smother get at least the same.
I think people need also to be thinking a little further into the future. The current DT setup is pretty solid, but what happens in the interim between GC17 and the clowns from West Sydney? There is going to be a bye people and what happens then? I put a forum topic up a week or so ago, but no real response. Am I thinking too far ahead?
yes, thats what the 6 month off season is for. that will be a hot topic later next year
has it always been a max of 20 trades a season?someone?
wallcob, at one stage there was mid season trading ONLY. i still vividly remember pre-internet fantasy footy on the dog and bone with THE AUSTRALIAN, ie dunstall, ablett snr, plugger et al.
I suggested 22 trades to vsports last year – solid idea.
To add to the skill of the game, there could be half points for interchange players. This would make it harder, which I think needs to occur as everyone improves at DT.
Won’t happen, but how good would it be to be able to gamble on your team vs another team or even another game in your league/eliminator?
live scoring page to have all your players listed with your own jumper rather than their own afl clubs.
Definites to improve the game:
- One emergency nominated as utility emergency. Or even have all emergencies be utility emergencies and be nominated in the order they come in to the team. Remove some of the bad luck factor of late withdrawals and reward people for having decent emergencies (whether or not they happen to be in the same position as the sudden withdrawal).
- More flexibility in who’s classed as a back. Call this the Luke Hodge/Andrew Carrazzo rule.
- People who are put on a long term injury list have their price reverted to the previous week’s price, if the price went down. Takes out the double-whammy sting of a long term injury, which forces a trade of a person who just went down in price due to an injury-affected low score! Also rewards people for waiting until later in the week to trade as they should be doing, and not trading the injured guy on Monday morning!
Suggestions just because:
-Utility position replacing one of the defender spots?
-FF 3 points same as a mark.
1/2 points for interchange is interesting
Oh, and Xstatik, I’m a Kangas fan so have every reason to be dity on Motlop, but he’s a top 10 goalkicker this year in a terrible team. He absolutely should be in the squad for a small forward role.
Some people in the media were suggesting Cyril Rioli for the AA squad. Cyril’s got huge potential but has kicked 20 goals in 22 games and not really racked up the disposals either. Not only would he be behind Motlop, Medhurst, Stevie J, Rob Murphy for AA small and medium forward roles (and behind Boomer since they’ve classed him as a forward), but also behind Matthew Stokes, Milne, Aker, Brad Johnson, Matt Campbell, Lindsay Thomas…
*Unknown Captains could play a few headaches and cause abit of sweat add in Emergencies after the start of the last scheduled match.
No Posting of Scores in the first 3 Rounds so no one will know who is scoring well, and who is not.
2 Points for FF takes away some of the pain of The Arm Chop!
Well Done DT the Live scores was a great inclusion this season!
Definately agree that the points for frees should be changed, but u could never be sure if the player was actually going to mark it before the idiot hit him and cost u 3 pts so i reckon 2 pts for FF and -2 pts for FA.
3 of your players could be nominated as utility players, chosen at the start of the year. They can play anywhere and if they’re on the bench as emergency they would be the first to fill in for any missing player.
If they get injured or u trade them out then u lose a utility???
How about giving the top 8 at the end of the season an extra 2 trades since they have to play in more games during the major finals or maybe 2 trades for the top 4 and 1 for 5th-8th.
Open the comp a bit earlier than a week before the season starts & make the first game a bit later so we can all have a look at the sunday teams, instead of getting frustrated by not being able to get into the site because it’s crashed.
Raf, Daniel Motlop is NOT a small-forward, neither is Paul Medhurst or Rob Murphy. Just because theyre short doesnt mean they are. Motlop plays as key/marking forward and shouldn’t be put in the All-Australian squad just because he is 185cm. He is a lazy, goal-hungry player who refuses to work up the ground and has a pissweak engine (despite what Archer says).
Stevie-J is more of a small-forward and a far more effective player so hopefully he will be included over Motlop but you never know with these pricks.
Scores for running bounces and for spoils.
Would make it way more interesting particularly among key backs – imagine 4 points per spoil. Mal Michael would be a bargain…
A Charity Fund for fallen DT Coaches who feature on Dreem Time TV with a team called “Collingwood” but don’t end up with the big red car.
I know how Motlop plays. I also know that he kicked over 50 goals for the year, so how that makes him unqualfied for AA FP or HFF (yes I know he’s more or less played FF for Power most of the year, but that’s not how AA selection works) I have no idea.
I realise you hate him. I’m not fond of him either, but he has had a very good year.
For what it’s worth I think the AA forward line will be:
Harvey Riewoldt Pavlich
Johnson Franklin Fevola
with either Motlop or Medhurst getting a bench spot (Richo got in the squad as a midfielder, has a decent shot of a bench possie too).
My predicted overall AA team from that squad will be:
Mackie Scarlett Morris
Hodge Bock McPharlin
Hayes Mitchell Cooney
Harvey Riewoldt(c) Pavlich
Johnson Franklin Fevola
Cox Ablett Bartel
Petrie Richardson Medhurst Corey
Medhurst over Motlop on the bench so Eddie doesn’t crack the sads again due to no Collingwood players!
on the live scoring page your teams players should have your teams jumper displayed on all your players instead of their afl clubs jumpers.
Each week you can pick one “Power Forward” where his goals are worth 12 points! I know everyone will probably just pick Buddy Love, but another add on to make it more interesting!
“I know how Motlop plays. I also know that he kicked over 50 goals for the year, so how that makes him unqualfied for AA FP or HFF I have no idea.”
It doesn’t, the fact that there are far better players available does. He has kicked 57 goals (8th in the AFL) but he is one of the most inconsistent players around and does NOTHING else to help the team. He averaged 8 kicks, 2 handballs and 4 marks a game. And his tackle count of 47 is hardly something to be proud of for a ’small forward’ as you call him.
If we’re going to pick the All-Aus forward line based purely on goals then we would still have 7 guys more deserving (and they do more around the ground).
For the record, my All-Aus forward line is similar to yours (disregarding the top40):
B.Fevola, L.Franklin, S.Johnson
B.Harvey, N.Riewoldt(c), M.Richardson
J.Corey, J.Bartel, K.Cornes
S.Fisher, N.Bock, B.Goddard
M.Scarlett, B.Rutten, D.Morris
D.Cox(vc), A.Cooney, G.Ablett
D.Petrie, D.Cross, S.Thompson, M.Pavlich
if an emergency scores more then a player on the field, we should get the emergencys score instead. i hate seeing tons on my bench.. its so frustrating
XztatiK- mate ur all aus team looks almost perfect.. but wheres juddy?
Cheers Jay, Juddy and Mitchell were just behind Crossy.
I’d like to see a substitution introduced, where you can swap a bench player on to the field during the lockout. It would be good for things like late withdrawals with no emergency cover.
I don’t think they’d be used that often, so maybe limit them to 10 a season, with a limit of 1 per round.
Does anyone actually send them an email? I have the last 2 years and both points have been taken on board. That is, limit rucks to two positions (end of 2006), and VC option for late withdrawals (end of 2007).
Two rucks on field that is.
I think the game is almost perfect.
Yes fix up the live scoring like the NFL as mentioned.
No more trades – its a skill of the game
No utilitities – having cover in all positions is a skill of the game.
I would like to see a point or two for a bounce.
I have seen this stat in the paper before so there must be a tracking on it. Story was about Rodan and others – Rodan was way ahead, and thats a credit to him, as he uses the bounce to avoid traffic and attack – the bounce is an awesome skill.
Also, half thru the NBA season, some yahoo game i did last year, the positions changed to what they actually play. Eg. AFL – Carazzo was placed in the midfield, but was a backman. So after the split round his position would change to backman.
The bounce is an overrated stat. Port led the league in bounces this year, think that says it all.
I think you should be able to buy trades BUT to a maximum of an extra 5 trades or something?? good idea yeah
Goals should be ten points.
