Calvin’s Captains - Rd 20

Calvin’s Captains

Righteo! Few good ones here this week, but very very thought week. Did I say VERY VERY tough week - Calvin says “hardest so far!” With the Voldt having a stitches and in some doubt and the Geelong trio playing Sydney in Sydney. Your ‘go to’ captains of late may need a second thought. I’ve got the shit here though, to try and steer you on the right track. The new thing here is in the ‘last time they met’ section, I include how many players scored 100+ in that game. This gives you a great indication whether or not, this weeks game, will be a free flowing high DT scoring game. Check it out!

Port Adelaide Vs Collingwood

Kane - 120
Swan - 97
Cassisi - 76
Dale Thomas - 74
Medhurst - 60

Not a bad start here. Kane Cornes has been going nicely lately. In his last 3 this year he has averaged 116. In his last 3 Vs the Pies he’s gone 110, 116, 134 averaging 32d a game. In his last 6 Vs them he has averaged 115 - very impressive and worth a very BIG thought for the job for you this week! Dale Thomas get in here this week to fill room with no Didak or Shaw. He averages 74 in his only 2 Vs Port and had a nice 96 last week. Swan averages 97 here and is coming off a good 111 last week. Medhurst has gone cold and will look to fire with the goals on offer here (especially with no Didak). Medhurst has only averaged 73 in his last 3 games this year though.

LAST TIME THEY MET:
ahhh they have not met this year.

Essendon Vs Adelaide

Thompson - 118
Edwards - 96
Stanton - 96
Hille - 77

Thompson is clearly your best bet here and with him averaging 108 in his last 2 this year, that includes 33d, 4t and 8m a game - he’s back! He averages 30d Vs the Bombers and even though he might cop the Welsh tag, he a chance for the big C.  Tyson Edwards has been going nicely. He has played Essendon 15 times in his career. Out of those 15 games he has only scored 100+, 3 times. With 2 of those happening in the last 2 times he has played them, nice Tys! Stanton has been quiet lately averaging 75 in his last 3 this year and might cop the Shirley tag this week. Hille averages 77 here and only 56 in his last 2 this year. Thomo’s form and previous game Vs them gives him my vote here, he’ll be tough to top, but will he get Welsh?

LAST TIME THEY MET: Rd 10 - Crows won by 5pts. Scottie Thompson scored 137 with 33d. McPhee racked up 108, Goodwin (27d) and Edwards had 101 each. Stanton might cop a Shirley tag as he had 94 last time. Hille had 14d, 22h/o for his 86. Monfires tagged McLeod and might go there again and Welsh will most likely have a roll locking down someone… but who? Thomo? 5 players scored 100+ last time.

Melbourne Vs West Coast

Green - 112
Cox - 96
Embley - 106
Priddis - 82
Brucey - 88

Cox was the flavour of the month a while back and now people have been turned off, why? He still averages 99 in his last 3 this year and nearly got his first 100 Vs Essendon last week only to fall short on 99. He averages 16d and 22 h/o Vs Jeff White if he get a game again, don’t cross Coxy out just yet. Embley has a great average of 106 here, but his form warrants a cross through him straight away. Brad Green last week was awesome. 112 Vs Geelong was a huge effort! He averages 112 here and has scored 100+ in his last 3 Vs them that consists of 24d and 11m a game. Oh and Priddis’ average of 82 is the only game he has played against them.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Haven’t yet this year.

Brisbane Vs Westerndawgs

B.J - 120
Cooney - 124
Black - 100
Cross - 89
Brownie - 85

Ok, Brownie struggled last week for his 36. But as I said last week, he sucks against the Hawks as he also had a 29 Vs them earlier in the year. He might bounce back here, but since he hasn’t scored over 100 in his last 4 this year, I doubt it. Brad Johnson is well worth talking about this week. Firstly he averages a very nice 120 in his last 3 Vs the Lions. His lowest score in his past 5 games Vs them is 112. In those 5 games he has averaged 125pts (21d, 9m and a total of 13.3g). Plus, in his last 2 games this year he has averaged 115. Hey! Anyone willing to put their money on the old B.J to do this again? Why not? His numbers are unbelievable!!! Cross averages 89 here (if you ignore his injured 29 in ‘07). But the problem with this handball magnet is that his highest score is 89 in his past 5 games, lift dude! Black broke his run of 6 scores under 100 with a century last week and like J.B is outta the picture here. Cooooney!!! Well and truly in the picture! He averages 29d a game Vs the Lions and had 148 (37d, 7t, 2g) last time he played them in Rd 12. But… Coon hasn’t scored 100+ in his last 7 this year. Ow! That hurts!

LAST TIME THEY MET: Rd 12 - Dawgs won by 63. Cooooney had 37d and 7t for his huge 148. J.B had 124 (3g), Murphy 122 (2g), Boyd 122 (32d) and Brad Johnson rocked up 112 (3g, 21d). Simon Black had his highest score this year Vs the Dawgs when he had a very modest 113 (29d). 10 players scored 100+.

Sydney Vs Geelong

Ablett - 98
Kirk - 108
Corey - 97
Bartel - 85
Hall - 67

Well, here it is. The mighty Cats Vs Sydney… in Sydney. I’m worried already. Big thing here to note is that when they played each other in Rd 5 only 4 players scored 100+. Tight DT game that’s for sure. Now, Ablett had a huge 150 in that game and must be worth a big thought. Joel Coreyhas been on fire this year. He has had 29d or more in 15 outta his 19 games this year. Booyeah!! He only had 71pts (21d) in his last game Vs them and wasn’t tagged! He averages only 24d Vs the Swans, which is quite a bit behind his usual numbers. Bartel has a very ‘average’ average here of 85.  He scored 124 in his last against the Swans, but before that he had shit scores of 43 and 88 on them. Now his form is bloody fantastic. Her averages 128 in his last3 this year and his lowest score in his last 6 games is 121. But yeah, I’m worried here alright. Not sure where to go!! Kirk offers a bit here with a great average of 108 to go with 26d and 8t a game. Barry Hall will play but no one cares. So Calvin … To cat or not to cat? Shit (headshake) … I’d go Ablett hoping for 120, Corey hoping for 110 and Jimmy hoping for 100. That’s expecting a lot, especially as only 4 guys got 100+ last time and this time, they are playing in Sydney. Think hard.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Rd 5 - Cats won by 42, but this one is in Sydney. Ablett dominated with 150pts! 35d and 3g despite the tag from Jack. Bartel had 124 (27d, 10t) and his partner in crime Corey, only had 71 (21d) and was not tagged! Steve J had 113 with 4g and captain Kirk had 96. Swans had 0 players score 100+, Cats only had 4.

Richo Vs Hawks

Mitchell - 113
Buddwood - 89
Richo - 96
Hodgey - 89

In his last 2 games this year, Buddy has had 111 and 139. Last time he played Richmond he kicked 1.7g. Missing out on an extra 35pts for not kicking straight (1.7g = 13pts and 8.0g = 48pts) - cop that Mathman he he! If he kicks reasonably straight could be a 120+ night for Buddwood. Sam Mitchell (Hodgey’s go to captain) averages a healthy 113 here with scores of 87, 119 and 133 that make that up. He has averaged 102 in his last 3games this year and is well worth a C this week. Tuck might follow him though or Hodgey. Hodgey despite being ‘the man’ this week has averaged 113 in his last 3 games this year - running hot! His average of 89 looks average but that is made up of 2 wicked previous game of 119, 99 and then a poor 48 which kills his 3 game average. He’ll be fine! Richo got the ‘chop’ this week and rightfully so. His last 2 scores of 70 and 50 have angered many of his coaches. He did have a huge 130 last time they met! Few questions there to think about lads. Will Buddy kick straight and knock up 120+? and who will Tuck tag, Hodgey or Sam?

LAST TIME THEY MET: Rd 6 - Hawks won by 12. Riiicho had 130 (27d, 13m, 4g) and our mate Hodgey had 119 with 31d and 8t. Crawf had 91, Mitchell 87 and Buddwood was quiet with just 58 as he kicked 1.7g. 6 players scored 100+.

Carlton Vs Kangaroos

Stevo - 81
Harvey - 95
Judd - 78
Marc - 69

Not much here to talk about. Stevo gets the top spot here based on form. Averaging 103 in his last 3 this year he is the pick here based on that alone. Judd is a gun player and a poor DT player. Sad really. He rips teams up for poor scores and only scores 90+ in a game 39% of the time. But we love ya Juddernaught! Next!!

LAST TIME THEY MET: 1st time right here this year.

Fremantle Vs St Kilda

Voldt - 122
Pav - 102
Hayes - 88

Stitches! Split webbing! Might be out! AARRGGG. Right lets pretend the Voldt will play and will be fine - That’s your call though, not mine! He averages a great 122 Vs Freo and has had 4 games of 100+ in a row Vs them. He doesn’t kick many goals Vs Freo (total of 6.4 in his last 3) but he racks up disposals (23) and averages 14m on them! That goes with the 5 100+ games he’s had in his last 6 games this year. But will he be 100%, ummm? Pavlich has averaged 105 after he rested his knee and he averages 17d, 8m with a total of 11.8g on the Saints. So much to think about here. Sit on the Voldt and keep tunned to dreamteamtalk.com and wait and check his progress later in the week. Great numbers though!!

LAST TIME THEY MET: Rd 13 - Only 7wks ago St Kilda won by 8. Voldt had a HUGE 152 with 18m and 25d. Harvey 125 (31d) and Pav had 109 (5.2g, 16d). Rhys had 85 and Lenny had an amazing 75 in the 1st quarter only to do a hammy and sit out what could have been a record breaking score. 8 players scored 100+.

CALVIN’S TOP PICKS FOR ROUND 20 (in order)

  1. KANE CORNES

  2. NICK REIVOLDT

  3. GARY ABLETT

  4. SCOTT THOMPSON

  5. BRAD JOHNSON

SHIT! Bloody hard this week lads, that’s my crack at it, but second guessing myself a lot here. Be sure to lock in your VC’s and read what I have spoken about with the risks of some of the players. Wait for injury news for later in the week too. Shit! Very tough!  Good luck guys. Oh.. and I’ll be locking in KANE CORNES.

Only worry is Port will probably get smashed but who cares, Kornes is a gun and won’t really have to put on a hard tag.

Tough call again. I’m considering Deledio again. Wish I had Kane.

It’s either Buddwood, Gablett or Lids. Sure the BIG DT GUNS could get 150, but Buddy hasn’t been so good against the Tigers and Gablett is up against the the DT-killer Swans. Deledio’s 3-round average is 104 and he scored 120 against the Hawks last time.

    Could be a goer.

Guys which 2 trades out of these would you choose.

    Burgoyne for Thompson.

Shaw for Newman (Wilkes/Ward on the field for the rest of the year if I don’t do it).

Vince for Murphy (Valenti as backup).

Saving the last trade for Ablett, hopefully he comes under 390K ?

    buddy, pav or cox?

  37. GravatarBy Dan on Aug 13, 2008 | Reply

    Good work Calvin

To choose from: Corey Cornes Swan Stevens Cox Pav Franklin

Reckon Dane Swan could be top 5 consideration after last weeks 111 - he might be ‘back’.

Swan’s record against Port is good and their team is even weaker than when he sets those scores. Collingwood with their tail up…

Setting Swan with ‘C’… Swan for 110+ :)

Pav/Cox - look good choices also. Cox looked out of sorts last week and still pulled a 99.

Kornes - Whenever I pick him he goes shit. Whenever I don’t he goes great. So I can’t choose him. So you guys who are choosing him will be safe now :)

    @Roly
    American footy is gay

    @darcy

Ablett - no way under $390k - he’ll need to get sub 70 points to get his price below $390k and he got 150 against Sydney last time.

Next week he’ll be at his cheapest point I think and it’ll $400k+

No chance getting him at $390k :)

    Dan.

I would go Kornes, seeing as the pies dont know how to tag, but i reckon he will be put on notice that if he actually gets any posessions, it will violate the team rule of not putting any effort whatsoever in. So I will go with Buddy.. even though Im a tigers fan, i have a feeling he will kick about 25 goals against us this weekend seeing as its going to be wet and we dont know how to play in the wet.

  48. GravatarBy Henry on Aug 14, 2008 | Reply

I reckon if you think you might struggle to win a do or die final, Franklin is a decent wild card.

One day he won’t give away the free kicks, and he will kick straightish.

He’ll score 200 points (400). Worst case you get 90-100 anyway.
