Calvin’s Captains - Round 18

Calvin’s Captains

Hi ho! Well do I have a cracker for you this week. Some guys who have been tearing DT to pieces do not seem to have what it takes this week, so are you willing to take the gamble? I say NO! But there are once again so absolute guns who are here to be picked. Last week Cox 101, Corey 133, Reivoldt 115 and Bartel 147 delivered the goods for good old Vin here as my top picks.  Oh, and just in case you are a first time reader (ha yeah right) all averages are worked out on the last 3 games as an average, and the “last time they met” section is just that, only in 2008 though. I hope I find something for everyone here. Enjoy!

Collingwood Vs Hawthorn

  • Buddwood - 93

  • Mitchell - 107

  • H. Shaw - 115

  • Swan - 92

  • Didak - 90

  • Hodgey - 75

Here we go! Lets start chatting here about the form of these guys. Hodgey has only scored 1×100 in his last 8 games this year and if you thought was bad, Heath Shitshaw carries and average of 52 in his last 3 games this year! TERRIBLE! Although this year (Rd 7) Heath did have a 150 (34d, 16m) Vs the Hawks, who knows with him! Swan has been solid of late averaging 94 in his last 3 this year and Didak has been a little quiet averaging 74. Sam Mitchell has averaged 31d Vs the Pies and has scored 100+ in those last 3 games at an average of 107. Buddwood gets my #1 vote here though. He had 146 Vs them in Rd 7, and kicked 6.4g. If he is on, and I mean kicking straight, this could be nasty!

LAST TIME THEY MET: Rd 7 - Hawks won by 65. Heath had huge 150 and Buddwood a huge 146 (21d, 10m). Mitchell 122 (39d), Swan 98, Didak 87. Hodgey did his hammy for his 60 and Medhurst was quiet with 48.

Essendon Vs Melboring

  • Stanton - 86

  • Bruce  - 83

Not much here. Stanton has been great lately averaging 114 over his last 8 games this year! With scores of 89, 135 and 174 in previous weeks, you could guts it and try him with the big C this week, bit risky… but your call. Oh and how good should Melbourne be if Jeff White can’t even get a game?

Adelaide Vs Carlton

  • Thompson - 107

  • Stevo - 99

  • Marc - 98

  • Judd - 81

  • Edwards - 62

Marc Murphy seems to be back after going quiet early a while ago, he has averaged 97 in his last 2 this year and has a healthy average of 98 Vs the Crows. Judd is a kickarse player, but a poor DTer. He killed the Dawgs last week for just 104pts, if that was anyone else, they’d have 130+ easy. Thompson has been cold of late only averaging 83 in his last 3 this year, but in the last 2 times he has played the Blues, he has averaged 27d and has 107 on them in his last 3, consider him big time! Stevo averages 26d on the Blues and has a nice average of near 100 Vs them to support his push for the job this week.

LAST TIME THET MET: Rd 6 - Crows won by 30pts. Thompson ripped up 120pts (33d) but Gibbs ‘minded’ him and might do a better job this time, Gibbs has been killing everyone! Marc had 108, Stevo 100 (24d, 10m), Edwards 99 and Judd was tagged out of it by Shirley for his 65.

Geelong Vs Richo

  • Corey - 110

  • Bartel - 105

  • Ablett - 121

  • Richo - 97

  • K. Johnson - 73

Many to choose from here but… Richo is back! He had a round high 17 marks last week and is the current league leader in that category. He scored a huge 132 and averages 97 V the Cats and is definitely worth a strong thought. Corey leads the league in uncontested possies (yeah boy) and has averaged 124 in his last 3 this year. Last week he had a huge 11t and he bumps his score up nicely with these each week! Great form! Plus, he averages 110 Vs the Tigers and is surely one of the best picks this week! Another great pick is Bartel. Averaging 125 in his last 4 this year, Jimbob had 28 uncontested possies last week and is very much enjoying the ‘Ablett free space’ and mopping things up. He also averages a very very healthy 105 Vs the Tigers! Corey or Bartel… flip a coin. Last time they played, Hyde tagged Ablett. This time they might tag else were. Hyde’s tag is shit anyway! Kane Johnson gets a mention this week cause he has averaged 112 in his last 3 this year and had 29 uncontested possies last week, plus 15m, but his average here of 73 might be a turn off. Ablett averages 121 here and after missing 2 games, the big dog will be missing again! Bartel or Corey for me here.

LAST TIME THET MET: Rd 8 - Cats won by 30pts. Ablett had a nice 135 and K.J had 108. Richo was solid for his 101. Bartel managed 93 (22d) and was moved onto Richo after he dominated early. Corey copped the Tuck tagged and was killed early only to come back late for his 91.

Kangaroos Vs Brisbane

  • Brownie - 116

  • Harvey - 100

  • Black - 98

Still dunno why I mention Black. But he does average 98 here, but has not scored 100+ in his past 5 games. Ouch! Lets talk about the Brown stuff. Not shit, but J.B. He averages 19d, 14m with a total of 12.13g IN HIS LAST 2 Vs the Roos, with scores of 133 and 140. He averages 116 and is definitely, surely, mega mega worth a BIG fat C for you here.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Rd 10 - Lions won by 31pts. Brownie had 6.7g (13m) , Black had 100 and was tagged by Sam “I suck” Power. Harvey had 92 and there were only 4 player who scored 100+.

Western Bulldogs Vs Sydney

  • Cross - 80

  • B.J - 106

  • Kirk - 70

  • Cooney - 75

  • Murphy - 63

  • Hall - 108

I’m a huge Daniel Cross fan but his numbers and turning me off a little and he’ll find it mega tough here Vs the Swans. He averages 85 in his last 3 this year and only 80 against Sydney! Lift boy! Cooney has gone cold too. No 100+ games from him in his last 5. Kirk is still the #1 tackler in the competition and will be all over these boys all day! Barry Hall plays well against the Dawgs, but forget it. Just to fill space… he averages 108 Vs them and with an average of 22d and 13m in his last 2…umm maybe, but NO! He has averaged 8d, 5m in his last 2 this year. Shop somewhere else lads.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Rd 7 - Dawgs by 18pts. B.J went to town on them for his 114 (22d), Mattner (44) tried to stop him, but couldn’t. Murphy had a solid 91. Kirk (65) tagged Boyd (73) and Cooney kicked 5g in his total of 111, Aker was crap with 39.

St Kilda Vs Port Adelaide

  • Kane - 122

  • Cassissi - 91

  • Hayes - 77

  • Reivoldt - 57

To Voldt or not to Voldt? That is an easy question. NO. This is why… He has been playing like a jet averaging 128 in his last 5 this year. But… he only averages 57 in his last 3 Vs them and that’s with 13d a game. Port’s ‘Charlie’ Chaplin kills him. His highest score Vs them in his last 5 is 76. Be gutsy if you wants, but I’m tipping not many coaches will like this, and I’m one! Kane is my tip here. He averages 122 Vs them with an average of 31d in his last 3. Cassissi(#2 best tackler this year)  had 123 (25d, 10t) last time they met and averages a nice 91 as well. Plus, he also averages 119 in his last 2 this year, roughie maybe?

LAST TIME THEY MET: Rd 3 - Port won by 21. Cassissi had 123 going head to head with Hayes (101). Kane (113) tagged Santo and held him to a poor 50. Voldt scrapped up 62 and his minder in Chaplin had 77. I believe this was the game were Chad did is finger.

Fremantle Vs West Coast

  • Pavlich - 77

  • Cox - 84

  • Priddis - 76

  • Embley - 66

Cox had his 5th 100+ game in a row last week and now averages 130 over that period despite ‘resting’ a lot in the 4th quarters. Sandi takes away a lot of his hit outs here and that’s maybe why his average is down a little (84). Pavlich could kick a big bag. He only averages 77 Vs the Eagles with an average of 13d and 19.4g total in his last 3. Maybe it will be his time to kill the weak Eagles in the Derby. Priddis had averaged 58 in his last 3 this year and is cold cold cold at the moment.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Rd 3. Priddis had 105 with 28d, Coxy had 96 and this is where he hurt that bloody foot of his (I think). Crowley tagged Selwood. Pav knocked up 88 (5.3g from only 14d). Embley had 62 and rookie Rhys managed 90.

CALVIN’S TOP PICKS FOR ROUND 18

  1. BARTEL/COREY

  2. BUDDWOOD

  3. KANE CORNES

  4. JONNO BROWN

I had Cox’s 101 last week. This week I’ll be going either J.B or Kane as I don’t have the other guns on that list.

“Charlie” Chaplin wont be playing this week. He has a dodgy ankle. He should not have played last week against Freo but came off very early in the game. Therefore the Voldt could be a good choice. Carlise will play on him. I am travelling over to Melbourne for the game this week and I am not looking forward to it as Port have officially given up. It is going to be a very long day!

I dunno about your picks this week Calvin, to start with theres no Swan and your number 1’s are versing Richmond who last week played Brisbane with there highest disposal getters having 21 and 20 touches! Richmond are killing sides DT wise this year. I have both Bartel and Corey but will be steering clear this week. Nice work anyway.

  20. GravatarBy Trotsy on Jul 30, 2008 | Reply

    Corey or Buddword for certain.

Certainly not the voldt as port will just drop numbers back to block his space.

  21. GravatarBy darcy on Jul 30, 2008 | Reply

Kornes in a losing side worked last week although is tagging NDS a problem ?

Either him or Pavlich this week.

  22. GravatarBy dids on Jul 30, 2008 | Reply

meh im just gonna go buddy anyway, dont care ill just hope he does well but not 2 well,im hoping he gets 20 kicks 0 handballs 15 marks 0 goals 10 behinds…that would get him ova 100 points and b gd 4 the pies
ps…collingwood will certainly win on friday so i reckon u could hav sawnny as captain

  23. GravatarBy SusCnt on Jul 30, 2008 | Reply

i reckon i could tag Nicky Dal out of a game.
not like he goes hard at the ball to get it.
just look at him, and he’d take a few steps backwards then hide on the wing.

Now come on Vin, you’ll get splinters sitting on the fence like that! Are you going Bartel or Corey?

I’m thinking Corey, but I’m also giving some serious thought to Kane this week, and here’s why: he won’t have an opponent. Port’s season is shot; last week he got it 39 times against Freo playing on no one. With nothing for Port to gain, I don’t reckon Kane will be given a tagging role again this year - Williams will want to see how some of the younger brigade can go, and the best way to see that is to free the game up.

Dont know what game you were watching when Port played St Kilda last time but the Voldt played all over the forward line. Chaplin played on him the whole game and even managed to score a goal for Port. Just comment on the Crows and us Port supporters who were at the game can give the correct information.

hey guys, need some help! i need to get a consistent side leading into finals so looking at upgrading one of my backs - who would be the one to trade-up out of = J.Mac? (still injured, not sure whats going on with him), H.Taylor (scores ok, not sure if he’s likely to hold his spot though) or Heath Shaw (no comment) .. possibly johncock too if he cant pull his finger out!

  64. GravatarBy knobjocks on Jul 31, 2008 | Reply

    dude

keep shaw, everyone else has him so it doesnt hurt as bad when he stinks it up. I would upgrade taylor, as the others can score 100+.

    dude

yeah gotta keep heath, he’s a pain in the arse but he can get 150 anytime soon.
If you’re after consistency, up grade Harry. Surely Jmac will be named tonight and he’s good for 80+, so is Jcock.

    But what would I know

Im going to do something a little nutty this week…..HEATH SHAW IS GOING TO BE MY CAPTAIN!

Im on top in my league, but im coming 2000th(ish) overall. Would love to break in to the 1000’s with everyone choosing superstars this week, hopefully they all fall over and Heath Shaw comes back with a vengence like never seen before…..if he plays like a dipshit though im calling chopper, and Ill even pay for his airfares from tassie to do the chopping job proberly…not Jake King lawn mower style (I still giggle when I think about it!) GAME ON SHAW !

Heath Shaw is coming to Tassie on Saturday for a footy function. He will be well within chopper’s reach if he stinks it up on Friday night…

  68. GravatarBy Warnie on Jul 31, 2008 | Reply

Oh… where is the footy function? We’ll get chop to pay heath a visit! Maybe actually seeing the axe might get his arse intro gear! Haha…

you must have a big set leigh.
im top of my league too. but keen to stay top. haha

  70. GravatarBy Raf on Jul 31, 2008 | Reply

Heath is still one of the best 10 backs in the comp, he’s just annoying from week to week. Another week or two without a big score though and he will actually drop out of the best backs list for sure. Hopefully has made himself a bargain for next year, though!

Thanks for the figures on Stevie, Vin.

Definitely going with JB at the moment, with Swan vice-captain. I’m a NM supporter, win or lose JB will still get a big score, we just don’t have anyone who can play on him… if all goes well JB’s score will come more from chasing marks up outside 50 a la Riewoldt, if all goes badly then Brisbane will be shovelling marks down Brown and Bradshaw’s throats 15-30m out like last time.

  71. GravatarBy Jack on Jul 31, 2008 | Reply

Good stuff Calvin but i have to disagree about what u said on Roo. Last few times Saints have played port the games have been at AAMI and one down at Tassie. Playing under the roof means better delivery, kicking for goal (hopefully) and stickier hands. Plus it’s a small ground which also works to Roo’s favour. Also last few times we’ve been owned in the midfiled but it won’t happen this time around.

Oh no! My best forward is out! No Tippett…Come back!

keep wona. he’s back in the side.

and leave rioli on for playfair while he’s injured. save that last trade for any injuries.

Cam,I know I should keep Wona but I have to win this week to make finals,so maybe i will but probably not.

newman or waite will probably score the same as wona anyway, so i wouldn’t even be close to thinking of doing it.

wona might come out and have a massive game against the dons. One forward usually does against essendon.

I’ve decided with Rhyce Shaw out i’m going to make Luke Hodge captain.

Youre an idiot Steve I was at that game too (supporting STK of course), and Riewoldt was at Full-forward all night while Kosimshitski lead up the ground. I didn’t say Chaplin wasnt on him but he did have a lot of help from Ross Lyon.
Actually watch the game next time you feel like adding to the 19,000 at a Power game.
