Tuesday Morning DT News… some ins and outs!

Files under 2008 | Posted by Warnie

Hmm… some info that may be of concern to you!

  • Sydney coach Paul Roos has confirmed that Adam Goodes will be confined to the sidelines for possibly ”two to three weeks” but at the very least, next week. He also said that he probably shouldn’t have played on the weekend (well, 29 DT points was pathetic… better off without you mate).
  • The Geelong Football Clubs have confirmed that Paul Chapman has a “minor tear” in his hamstring and would miss a couple of weeks with it. However, they are very confident on four big inclusions this week in Gary Ablett, Darren Milburn, Cameron Ling and David Wojcinski coming into the side to destroy the Tigers on Saturday night. (Personally, I wouldn’t be holding my breath on Gazza - they have to see how he goes getting through training this week… in my opinion, they won’t risk him against the Tigers).
  • The Port Adelaide Tank Engine is gathering momentum… Steven Salopek’s achilles is stuffed and is unlikely to play again this year. This is to add to Chad Cornes and Warren Tredrea’s season ending injuries and the fact that All Australian ruckman Brendon Lade can’t get a game and Peter Burgoyne had a club suspension last week.
  • Freo will say goodbye to Rove’s cousin, Shaun McManus this weekend as he will retire after the Derby. McManus is the last foundation player going around. Well done on a fantastic career Shaun!
  • DT Hero from the weekend, Jason Porplyzia, made an awesome comeback from his stuffed shoulder against Sydney…  the thing is he popped it again and he still kicked 5 goals! I giggled at this quote: “Jason Porplyzia is classified as fully fit despite presently being the owner of a right shoulder that is looser than Jason Akermanis’ tongue.” Lets hope he can see out the year!

How can Port be tanking? They’ve passed the priority pick threshold and are a win ahead of Freo. Yes, their season is over and probably won’t win another game.

Love my Power, and glad we are tanking, AFL put their head in the sand when Carlton have done it for years, why not us too.

How are we tanking Disco? you kidding me? Lade is currently an all australian ruckman and we are playing teenager deluca who had 15 hitouts and only 1 to advantage, and a total of 3 disposals all clangers.

When we got back to 3 goals at the start of the last quarter, we had brogan on the bench for deluca, and hid shaun burgoyne gun clearence player in the backline.

The roses smell nice Disco, wake up and smell them :)

mark thompson said ‘on the couch’ last night that ablett was an 80% chance to resume. also wojack was 50-50. ling and milburn certainties.

  4. GravatarBy Disco on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

Developing players isn’t tanking - season 2008 is dead and buried for Port. It only makes sense that they play the young players to see who’s worth keeping.

Lade is dropped coz he’s having a shit year and possibly his last. Wilson is goorwn as well.

Tanking is when you loose on purpose to get priority picks (which they’ve missed out on) or to get the highest draft pick possible. Its not tanking when your team is shit to begin with and don’t have any good players to drop, especially when Chad, their best player, wasn’t 100% or available.

They’d only improve their position by one spot maximum in the draft (they’re a win ahead of Freo) by tanking.

A far different situation from Carlton (the cheats) or even the Hawks.

  5. GravatarBy Fry on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

Port wont be tanking on the same level as west coast or carlton last year. A few simple reasons.
    - They have little to gain from thier current ladder position.
    - Word is that the top 6 players in the draft could go top 2 any other year.
    - they are a proud club the a nutcase coach who can’t handle losing.
    - thier supporter base is too small for them to keep losing with such horrible performaces. this one also goes for the dees.
    - It is also important they play De luca as he is the ruckman coming through the ranks. lade is on his way out which means de luca would take the no. 2 spot. i’m sure choco will see in the next few weeks that he isn’t up to it.
So you they are crap but tanking…maybe only a tiny bit. not enough for them to be in the company of Carlton over the last 3!

  6. GravatarBy Warnie on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

so you’re saying deluca and lade can’t play in the same side together? bad argument… they should be playing their best side available (Lade is easily in that!)… and even if his role is to be second fiddle to deluca…

  7. GravatarBy Fry on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

That’s correct. You can’t play them in the same side together. It’s 3 ruckman with Brogan included. Deluca needs to learn about ruck duties which would put Lade forward where he is too slow. They need to find out if Deluca has what it takes. lade will most likely finish up anyway.

Same as the dees. Jamar and Johnson are the future. White is on his way out and not all 3 can play in the team doing the same role.

Salopek out -> Scott Thompson in

Probably next week though after Thompson drops a little more. Palmer can fill in for Slopek this week, I’m playing bottom team so no worries.

damn u goodes, i got you cause you never miss games!! it had to turn pear shaped at some stage i spose. i should have realised this would happen the day you finally got rubbed out for 1 match earlier this yr…… after escaping the previous 5

I’m tossing up between Bock and Mackie. Bock is a bit cheaper, but I am concerned he might play up forward which will curb his dream team points. Any thoughts?

  11. GravatarBy Disco on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

Jerry - go Mackie. Fisher, Goddard and Milburn worth a look also.

  12. GravatarBy cam on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

    Joel Macdonald to miss again…

Listed as 1 week, was “test” the week before, and 1 week before that!

Frustrating as I can’t trade him as his value has gone down so much… hopefully he is back for finals.

goodes is supposed to start flying at this time of year, pulling in massive scores every week, not 29s and certainly not getting injured.

im using one of my 2 remaining trades to offload his ass this week most likely to sam mitchell who i can afford with only $100 to spare

  15. GravatarBy cardez on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

i have 5 trades left & 274k sitting top of my league and just out side the top 2100!!! ive got Goodes but thinking of trading him in for S.thompson i also have Chapman But i have Valenti to come in for him!!
and witch backman should i pick up for David Myers who sitting on my Bench???

does every1 think Johncock will play this week

  16. GravatarBy Steve on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

I am hoping Port finish 14th. Melbourne will pick up Watts, West Coast will pick up Rich and then Port can get Naitanui. We need a ruckman as Deluca is very ordinary. Lade will play on next year but he will be our back up in case of injury.

Cmon Freo this week to beat West Coast to go above us.

  17. GravatarBy DecipheR on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

I love it, everyones wanting their sides to lose for draft picks hahaha. Go Freo beat West Coast! West Coast for the Golden spoon!

Need some new midfielders, get rid of fletcher, Nicoski and the other dead weight.

Fremantle with these picks should become a strong side over the next 1-2 years as some of their new players mature, however as theyve shown year-in year-out they’ll probably finish towards the bottom.

  18. GravatarBy Muppett on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

#1 is Ours!! Hands Off!………we (melb) will also get #1 preseason pick so that we can get Rob Warnock from Freo for sweet FA….we deserve it after losing guns like Scott Thompson, Simmonds, Farmer, Jolly etc and getting jack all in return!

  19. GravatarBy Tit-ed on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

    Farmer, hahahahaha…..

  20. GravatarBy jay on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

Steve- mate i highly doubt Naitanui will be third pick. Classy ruckman are really hard to come by. Melbourne obviously need a new ruckman since White can’t even get a game these days. I’ll put 100 bucks on Naitanui going to Melbourne.

    Jay,

I’m sure there’s a betting agency out there that will actually take that bet. I’ve seen stranger things bet on.

“we deserve it after losing guns like Scott Thompson, Simmonds, Farmer, Jolly etc and getting jack all in return!”

You traded Scott Thompson you clown and you got pick 12 for him, hardly “jack all in return”.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_AFL_Draft

And you decided with pick 12 to get in Brent Moloney from Geelong

cam/jay course there are betting agencies

    https://www.sportsbet.com.au/sports/event/SportID/4/CompetitionPID/16712/RoundPID/433/EventID/850778

been up for a while. funnily enough Naitanui is tipped to go 3rd. The problem with Steves logic is that we haven’t played melbourne yet (we get to play Sydney and Geelong twice, and don’t get to play melbourne till end of the year, trying to make the draw even more unfair).

Hey guys i would love some help.

i assume most of you have heath Shaw. I am one of the few that does not. Considering he will go down so much is he worth picking up?

if you didn’t have him would you pick up guerra for less money or has guerra gone too shit to pick up at all?

That being said should both be avoided and a bock, fisher, mackie be picked up if i do 2 trades and get some extra money. I have only a few trades left.

  27. GravatarBy DRuz on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

Nah get Shaw he is awesome, make him captain every week unless he is out injured….

  28. GravatarBy Disco on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

Fry - how much cash and trades do you have?

  29. GravatarBy Fry on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

75,000 4 trades with cornes still in the team.

I have p burg who i hope comes back and i want a trade for kennely who sucks balls!

other then that my team rocks…although ill swap palmer if i can.

  30. GravatarBy Henry on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

FRY - I’d keep Kennelly. There are very few backman who’ll reliably score 20+ more than Kennelly. Is 20 points worth the trade?

Given uber-guns like Richo, R Murphy, Buddy, Ablett, S Thompson, (Swan?) etc are dirt cheap / about to be dirt cheap, I’d be trading into them and hoping for a 150, rather than upgrading Kennelly’s 65 for some other backmen’s 85. Just my thoughts. Maybe downgrade Palmer to Dalziel for cash then chase the guns.

  31. GravatarBy cam on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

One day Heath Shaw won’t get tagged… that’s when he scores his 100-150.

If you want consistency, get Birchall. Don’t expect 100+ but he has scored less than 65 only twice and is still very cheap.

  32. GravatarBy Fry on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

Hmm I like your point Henry. But if you get a mackie or a fisher then it seems worth it. i have mostly guns. My forward, ruck and center are all guns except for palmer who i might oof load.

my backs have ibbo (who is good enough) and mcloed who should be ok. this leaves poor Kennelly to get me 60’s…i wonder if it isn’t worth making the trade. hmmmmmm.

  33. GravatarBy jay on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

Thats true cam but tagging heath seems to be working for most teams. I think he will keep getting tagged. The idiot dosen’t even attempt to break a tag. I can’t see any more centuries from mr potato head.

guys i have 1 trade left and $9,000 and im thinking about trading burton out for r.murphy. is it worth it? i have morton from the hawks and kennedy from the west coast eagles on my bench and chappy who is injured and porp who i cant trust. ruck i got cox and sandilands with no backup. midfeild i got green and ablett on the bench with cotchin and valenti coving that for now. and backline i have jake king getting me zeros and my bench s.d.thompson and j.edwards not getting a game. with all that should i trade burton or look to trade out king for someone like gurra or hold onto my trade for another week?

Jay, as a Melbourne die-hard I can almost guarantee you we will pick up Jack Watts. Need a ruckman true, but we got Johnson, Meesen and Jamar currently along with one possible Rob Warnock.

Ruckman are hard to come by, but game winning power forwards are way harder. How many have there been in the past 10 years?

  40. GravatarBy Higgo on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

not much talk bout Wanna. Anyone know his situ? will he b back this week?

  41. GravatarBy jay on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

Your 100% right John! Jack Watts is a superstar iv seen some impressive footage of him. You ask how many power forwards have been produced in the last 10 years? I say probably more than good ruckman. People tend to under-estimate the influence of a good ruckman on a game. Melbourne may very well chose Watts, i guess it all depends on the team and whch area of the field they are lacking the most talent.

  42. GravatarBy Disco on Jul 29, 2008 | Reply

Fry - as Henry said, you’re better off upgrading a midfielder, they will score 100+ where a back will score 80+.

dylan, joe - hold your last trade, there will be injuries.

carl - steer clear of Guerra. Drummond is a similar price.

John Rombotis - 1, Shane Ellen.

Remember Freo are not that smart. They gave up Andrew McLeod to the Crows in exchange for Chris Groom. That move worked really well?

I am still convinced that Melbourne will take Watts first - they need a key forward. West Coast dont need a ruckman as they have Cox who can do everything. Welcome to Port Adelaide Naitanui.

Chad, I reckon we will play dead in round 21 and let Melbourne win that game. No point in winning from here on in. Just give the kids a chance and build up for next year.
