Calvin’s Captains - Rd 17

Calvin’s Captains

Oh here he is! Me! Calvin! he he. Last week was a ripper round for captains. According to the DT Talk poll of 749 people, 51% of people took the Calvin’s advice and cashed in on Cox’s round high of 157 and Pav’s 148! Don’t we love that! My other top picks were Bartel 20% (94pts) and Rievoldt 5% (126pts) and they were certainly no disgrace to their coaches. So listen up lads and I’ll tell ya who to go this week, but it is a little tricky.

Hawthorn Vs Geelong

  • Corey - 96

  • Bartel - 93

  • Hodge - 116

  • Mitchell - 97

  • Chapman - 97

  • Buddwood - 80

A lot of hype around what will most likely be a flogging, but you’re not here for my tips this week. NO ABLETT… I repeat NO ABLETT and NO Pink Pig either, I think! Last week Geelong had 11 guys score 94+, that’s krazy with a k! Hodge has scored 3×100’s in a row in his last 3 games Vs the Cats and averages 29d on them. Corey and Bartel are in some kickarse form. Corey has averaged 121 in his last 3 this year and Bartel has averaged 124 in his last 3. Get on them!! Oh and Bartel had 31d, 6t last time he played them in 2007.  Sewell might run with one of them, but which one? I’m tipping/guessing Bartel, leaving Corey to run a muck. Buddy had 9d for his 3 goals last week and is worth staying clear of again here. Chapman had a massive 142 (35d, 2g) two games back Vs them in 2007 and is worth a small thought as well. Bartel and Corey for me here though!

Essendon Vs Collingwood

  • Shaw - 97

  • Stanton - 96

  • Swan - 81

  • Didak - 93

  • Medhurst - 56

The thing to note here is - as Warnie posted yesterday, Essendon have 26 players ONLY to choose from this week, look into that how you like. Theory #1 - The Pie guns be way too good. Theory #2 - Essendon young boys step up, and rise to the occasion. Whatever, I don’t really care, hate them both! he he. Medhurst has very weird scores of 126, 16, 28 and 21 in his last 4 Vs the Bombers and will be better than that this week! Heath Shaw averages 97 (23d, 9m) Vs the Bombers and could be due for another one of his massive ones, but he did have 39 (11d) last week, so maybe the Shawacoaster will go up this week, I’m tipping YES. Swan has averaged 104 in the last 3 games this year, but his average of 81 makes him look unlikely unless you believe in thoery #1.  But then we have, Brent Stanton averaging 96 here and 130 over the last 3 weeks. He will be the centre of Collingwood’s focus, surely!! Be careful. But hey… I can’t knock him, can I? Not with that form.

LAST TIME THEY MET - Rd 6. Collingwood won by 73. Pendlebury had a massive 150 (33d), Cloke 129, Medhurst 126 (6g, 17d), Didak 122, Heath Shaw 100, Swan 97 and Stanton had 88 with 10 Pies with higher scores than the highest Bomber. Ow!

West Coast Vs St Kilda

  • Cox - 129

  • Reivoldt - 107

  • Priddis - 119

  • Hayes - 120

  • Embley - 79

SHIT! Read this sitting down. This could be a MASSIVE DT scoring game according to these numbers. Priddis averages 119 in the only 2 has has Vs them, that includes his huge 160 in 2007. Embley has been in hot form, averaging 119 in his last 2 this year. Lenny Hayes averages 28d and 8t Vs the Eagles, that makes up his impressive 120 average here. Reivoldt has averaged 132 in the last 4 games this year and had a blinder last time he played them. He had 131 (31d, 13m, 4g). This week he gets his own section:

DEAN COX- against St Kilda he averages a HUGE 129 with 24d and 27 hit outs. His form is ridiculously Krazy, with a capital K. He has averaged 144 in his last 3 this year at an average of 27d, 32 hit outs, 9m and 4t a games!! He had an outstanding round high last week. He had 146 at three quarter time… to only score 11 in the last to finish with his 157 after sitting a lot on the bench. Oh… and please … do NOT, DO NOT use Darren Jolly’s name in the same sentence as this great man.

Richo Vs Brisbane

  • Richo - 104

  • Brownie - 80

  • Black - 62

Not a lot here. Richo has been missing for 2 weeks, and still might not play. But he will be fresh if he does. I fresh Richo might spell trouble. Black has had 0×100’s in the last 4 weeks and is stinking it up mega! J.B averages 18d, 10m and 2g Vs Richmond and might go ok. Nothing concrete here for me. NEXT!

Sydney Vs Adelaide

Kirk - 79

Edwards - 86

Thompson - 86

Goodwin - 90

Brownlow chance, Captain Kirk broke his run of 5×100’s last week with a 65 and will bounce back this week! Look out for big things! Goodwin had a big 136 (27d, 4t) 2 games back Vs the Swans, but he has only scored 1 cold 100 in his last 9 games this year! Darren Jolly is not an All Australian ruckman, and not on form either. His about 3/4 in line at the moment. He has averaged a very good 100 in his last 3 this year, but his average of 17d, 21 h/o and 8m over his last 3 DO NOT come close to the big boys, definitely not the BIG COX.  No one can argue with that, and I’m sick of people talking about it. Maybe on the bench, maybe.

Port Adelaide Vs Pavlich

  • Kane - 108

  • Pavlich - 97

  • Salopek - 96

  • Cassissi - 86

Kane Cornes has lost his brother, and hasn’t phased him in the past, he’ll be fine! He averages 28d Vs Freo and that goes with his average of 105 in his last 3 this year. He’s back! Pavlich has averaged 114 in his last 5 this year, and is ripping it to bits. He averages 97 here and is defiantly worth a very good thought.

LAST TIME THEY MET - Rd 10. Port by 28. Very recent match! Sandilands had 117, Kane 107 (played on Carr who had 64, Kane had 31d) Pav 88 (22d, 1g) and Salopek had a solid 90.

Melbourne Vs Kangaroos

  • Bruce - 98

  • Harvey - 103

  • Green - 80

Harvey is now the equal second Brownlow favourite ($5) and is in great form. He averages 98 in his last 3 this year and averages 103 Vs Melbourne. Harvey has only scored 100, 31% of the time this year. Green might not play, so watch this space if you are banking on him, but Cam Bruce has been ripping it like mad. He wants to make DT All Australian! He averages 118 in his last 10 this year! Yep, he does. He has averaged 35d, 10m and 2 goals a game in those last 3 this year (115).

LAST TIME THEY MET - Rd 4.  Roos by 48. Harvey 106 (26d, 7m) ,Green 100, White 92, Bruce 82 and my mate Nath Jones 49 HA! - Low scoring game that’s for sure.

Westerndawgs Vs Carlton

  • Cross - 97

  • Judd - 105

  • B.J - 107

  • Cooney -84

  • Marc - 84

  • Steveno - 87

Stevo got THE CHOP last week, and rightfully so. He’s had 29 and 51 in his last 2, but did have 121 and 122 prior to that, ummm… Judd has scored 5×100’s in his last 6 games Vs the Dawgs and could be alright here (nah). He averages 69 in his last 3 this year, but does have 23d against his name this year. Cross has scored 82 and 89 in his last 2 this year making this a game of a poor form players. Cooney continues the trend as he has only averaged 79 in his last 2 this year. Marc has only played the Dawgs once for his 84 and B.J averages 22d and 2 goals a game Vs the Blues, which is worth a tiny thought.

CALVIN’S TOP PICKS FOR ROUND 17

  1. DEAN COX

  2. JOEL COREY

  3. NICK REIVOLDT

  4. JIMMY BARTEL

Last week I was the proud owner of a very BIG COX. Thanks Dean, do it again champ! My personally overall average is now 105.75.  Average but ok, considering it makes up half my teams score each week.

well ive gone rooey the last 2 weeks and i will keep going with him until he has a bad game,im worrying more bout my trade options this week than my captain options so nice and simple by just staying with rooey

ffs… Do Cornes to Mackie, if you’ve got Palmer wait until he’s confirmed as out for the year before you pull the trigger even if you have no-one playing on the bench: cop a zero AND WAIT. Don’t piss ur last trade away.

How can I not go Cox!

I hate going with the popular choice and went Corey last week but it would just be stupid not to pencil in Cox as skip.

  9. By Deez on Jul 23, 2008 | Reply

I will never doubt you again Vin.

Passed on Cox and Pav and went with Bartel. Was lucky enough to still win with a crap score.

    Locking in Cox this week!

also, i was a little shocked when the commentators on channel 7 (i think) we’re mentioning jolly for all australian.
ha! a quadraplegic would make a better ruckman than jolly..
well… maybe not.. but you get the idea

    hahahahahaha port vs pavlich!!
well to be fair it should be port vs pavlich, sandilands and mcpharlin. but who cares.

    COX or pav for me!

Very tempting to go Cox but be careful cos the Saints have changed their ruck division a lot since the last time he played them. Also he is carrying an injury and might be rested since West Coast are clearly tanking. Also the Saints might tag him with Blake and hence stop all the easy backline touches that the big Cox loves. However despite all this, he’ll probably still get 150.

Personally I’ll probs go Riewoldt. Who in West Coast’s line up could possibly play on him.

Cheers though Calvin, went Cox last week and he was awesome. Keep up the good work mate.

if glass wasnt injuried, riewoldt would be his bitch for the night.
wilkes isn’t too bad, but if he (riewoldt) keeps running up the ground to get marks, i can’t see a defender being bothere to chase him that far. specially not an eagles defender

  20. By Marcus on Jul 23, 2008 | Reply

im probably gonna go riewoldt but i reckon he might have to stay closer to goal coz of kozi being suspended so that could reduce his score. i still reckon he’ll tear it up coz woosha said hell probably play matt spangher on him…enough said

i have all those 4 for once
    who should i go??

  22. By Khy on Jul 23, 2008 | Reply

    c’mon woosha.
stop with the rookie match ups.
talking bout rookies tagging ablett, wilkes playing on browny, now some dud i dont even know playing on riewoldt…

    this won’t please muppett!

    which pair r betta
Mackie and Marc Murphy(avg.2getha is 94)
    or
Drummond and Swan(avg.2getha is 91,taking away the 2 games Drummond got injured in)
i feel i cant go wrong here, but leaning 2wards Drummond and Swan

  24. By Owlz on Jul 23, 2008 | Reply

With Kosi out i think Cox will run a muck i was silly enough to change to bartel before lock out last week still won my match but could of been so much better. Cox locked in and All Aus will be cox’s reward, they only talk about jolly to keep it interesting. Cox is amazing with one leg he still rocks !!

  25. By didsi on Jul 23, 2008 | Reply

yer cox is the best ruckman by far,but big monkhurst has the record 4 most disposals by a ruckman with 37 disposals(mayb 38)

Roo, Pav or Kornes guys ? I have missed Roo the past month I am worried he will screw me if I pick him again ? And Cox is a worry too in SC becaue 2 150’s he could so easily do what Ablett and others have and get 75 ?

  27. By didsi on Jul 23, 2008 | Reply

darcy,im gonna keep my faith in rooey as i hav the last 2 weeks and since his been without the strapping on his shoulders and knees he has been in gr8 form and more importantly in gr8 dt form,i think ur like me darcy,u hav cox in SC but not DT???

BRUCE! what a gun. it’s time people realised that he is a top 10 dream team player. Take away his injured first two games and he’s almost on the top.

I’ve had him since round 6 and I’ve loved every minute! pick up of the year in the midfield with boyd.

Good stuff fellas - Blake going to Cox is a little concern. I think he will as well! Cox will still be good for 100, thats a bad day for him at the moment anyway. I’m sure St Kilda would have tried to stop him before though, as have all the clubs this year. GO COXY!

Cox and Reivoldt will collect many C votes this week, 75% I’m tipping, and they are in the same game, oowwwww

    @Brendan

I am thinking of getting Tom Lonergan myself - he seems to be starting to take off in scoring ability

Will put $56k in my bank account and i’m hoping he will average around 60-90 region

I’ve been winning without Cornes anyway so I can use that $56k to get two super guns in the midfield instead of one (Ablett/Swan)

Bullfreakinshit, Riewoldt’s engine would destroy Glass, he’s a V8 while Glass is more like a Toyota Prius or somethin.

Agree with you on Jolly, Calvin. Hille has got the bench spot wrapped up.

It’s Bartel vs. BIG COX for me, i know if i change it from Bartel to Cox now then Jimmy will play a blinder. hmm…

I have Corey and the Big Cox…

I have avoided handing the captaincy to Cox scared that his foot will give way during a game…
I know if I take him I’ll jinx him so will stay with Corey…

  44. By Chopper (not the DT talk one) on Jul 24, 2008 | Reply

XztatiK… riewoldt can run 100 metres from goal and get cheap marks all he likes. whats the point in glass chasing him that far?
but one on one, glass would dominate.

and since we’re comparing them to cars, i’d compare riewoldt to a car that cries like a girl alot…
and i’d compare glass to a car that is the reigning all australian fullback…

  45. By ken on Jul 24, 2008 | Reply

glass has been injured all year he could hold riewoldt
….other than scarlett he is the best full back in the game when fit
….mind you riewoldt is one of the best forwards too.

Cox is unbelievable. It’s amazing how much ground he covers for a big man. And with Koschitzke out for the Saints, he’ll have an easier match up.

  47. By knobjocks on Jul 24, 2008 | Reply

Tim - I think it is time to drop the “Cox is carrying an injury” talk. He had 36 touches in just over 3 quarters. If he is carrying an injury I dont care. The only reason not to go him this week is that you dont have him!!

Riewoldt in form and WC have no-one to play on him.

I am a bit worried that WC will give Cox more time on the bench in this one.

On those numbers, Luke Hodge wouldn’t be a bad risk either, certainly an unusual captain to take.

Raf - WCE were looking to line Lynch up on Richo-man last week, but there was no Richo. I watched Big Q attempt a try-hard Richo ‘08 style role versus the Hawks but all he achieved was an Ugliest Man In The AFL nomination. Based on that I think he’d go to Revolt. Wilkes as backup. Or Chad Fletcher for tanking.
