Player of the Week: JOEL BOWDEN

Files under General | Posted by Calvin

under.JPGForget Dean Cox’s massive 157, or O’Keefe’s 155 and even Matthew Pavlich’s 148 - because Joel Bowden’s 73 takes the prize for me this week. “Surely he breached the spirit of the game” Mike Sheahan said. Surely not Mike! Bloody fantastic Joel. This is even being compared to Chappell’s underarm delivery all those years ago - C’mon? Seriously! Teams chip it around at the end of the game (we love that great DTing) and Joel did the exactly the same thing, wasted time and won the game. But Joel gets my vote this week… for handballing it over the line (2pts), yeah yeah he should have kicked it, but thumbs up Joel.

The poetry was that it happened against Essendon - the team that invented the ‘kick it around the back line and use up the clock’ ploy in the early 90s via Gary O’Donnell. Suck it up Bombers!

(And Sheahan is an angry little ball of condescension)

ha ha - essendon fans will be all over this Henry. Look out he he

Get fucked Vin… I am all over it… and not just because I am an Essendon supporter (lucky I didn’t see it otherwise I would have been bloody pissed off)…

I am gutted because I picked up Joel Bowden at the start of the year for this very reason - he is a great cheap stat getting DTer! Fucking Terry Wallace is a prick.. made me get a shit scoring and injury riddled little midget in Jake King while Bowds was racking up 100’s in the VFL….

    GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I’m an Essendon fan and think what Joel did was acceptable in the circumstances. I was there and whilst no happy with the result, realise it was his only option and a very smart thing to do.

The clock doesn’t restart until he actually kicks or plays on, and the man on the mark could have run him down instead of waiting but he didn’t, not until another 10 seconds were wasted.

Underearm bowling is cheating and against the spirit of the game. What Joel did was intelligent and effectively won them the game.

I have both Palmer and Chad with about 15k in the bank. What would be a better option, Chad to Guerra and Palmer to Murphy this week? Or I could wait a week for Guerra’s price to drop, play Cotchin and Talyor and then do Chad to Guerra and hopefully Palmer to Scott Thompson?

    Any ideas

    Im with Vin,
    Carried Bowdens ass for ages.
Then traded him out for crap backs with no end of problems, just to see him return to his old role and rack up some decent scores. If he was just going to return him to his back role then why was he dropped in the first place. Wallace deserves choppers attention for pissing over our backline during the year.

remember joel, what goes around comes around. just ask tredders.
and henry we’ll suck it up mate, along with our 16 other premierships and the higher draft pick as the result of this loss.

I have no problem with what Bowden did. He always intended to kick it both times but didn’t have any options to kick to, so he rushed a behind. His intentions never were to waste 30 seconds by rushing 2 behinds, they were two separate sequences of play. It’s no different if he did it in Q2 at 5:46 and in Q4 at 15:33 - if he’s under pressure to cough up a goal, he has to rush a behind.

Does football even have ‘Spirit Of Football’ guidelines, like Cricket does? I doubt it. Get fuct Mike Sheehan.

Jim - hold on to your trades if you have backup players on the bench and can survive with them.

good play from Bowden. Good way to rack up some dream team points, although he should kick it through.

I’d like to just bring up the player who really cost Essendon the game…Jason Laycock. Is this the worst player to ever don an AFL guernsey, he certainly is the most spastic to play Essendon senior football. Fuck you Laycockhead…

i think it was dirty, disgraceful, against the spirit of the game, absoultely gutless and pathetic when joel bowden was dropped from the side. i paid up for him and was forced to trade for king the dud! bowden is a smart and dedicated dter, shut up mike sheahan u loser!! ps. that underarm ball was cool, i dont know why the nz guy didnt kick it up with the old julious marlow and whack it 4 six. boony would have.

  13. By Morts on Jul 21, 2008 | Reply

I’m also in the same boat, did the Bowden -> King trade

  14. By Jocko on Jul 21, 2008 | Reply

Off topic but good point Roy re the underarm bowl, apparently doug walters bet one of his teammates shortly after the game that he could hit an underarm ball for 6 so they set it up at the scg, ball came in, he flicked it up with his boot and dispatched it into the stands. Took the money and probably spent it on booze. Essendon players clearly as retarded as their supporters and NZ’ers. After the first time the guy on the mark should have just stood in the square and tackled bowden - would have given away a 50 but at least Joel would have to have kicked it. Good for essendon, good for dt. Mark McVeigh whingeing after the game, what an Eddie Munster impersonating little b*tch. Couldn’t have happened to a bigger pack of c0cks.

Agree, I was in the same boat with Bowden, Wallace isn’t my best graces DT wise these days.

I also did the same thing with Riewoldt, and now he is back to the form everyone expected from him at the start of the year.

The lesson being, as usual, no sideways trades.

Ha ha - you guys are actually pretty funny. he he

Suck shit Essendon, nice and ironic seeing as they invented time wasting/icing the clock. Once again, suck shit

  18. By Raf on Jul 21, 2008 | Reply

By the way, the “give away 50″ idea that commentators think is so clever doesn’t actually work, much as it would be wicked fun for some players to get to deliberately give away a 50 (running over the mark and slinging Bowden to the ground, anyone?).

All a 50 metre penalty does is move the mark up 50 metres. Bowden could still stand 50 metres back from the mark if he wanted to. Some players taking set shots seem to start their runups from 50 metres behind the mark as it is…

  19. By Raf on Jul 21, 2008 | Reply

Oh, and all I heard of that game was the last 5 minutes while I was in the car, and my only thought afterwards is “let’s see who Essendon blames for this, Laycock for missing several simple shots, Stanton for wasting 30 seconds and missing that last shot, or the opposition player for wasting maybe 20 seconds with rushed behinds..”

  20. By Henry on Jul 21, 2008 | Reply

Nice one BizWiz - just keep looking in that rear-view mirror and don’t forget to trade the draft pick for 30yo backman because your team is almost complete! You should probably sign up Lloyd for another 5 years as well, he’s one of your quickest players.

fuck there’s some shit talked on this site…

haha, i fucking love it! :)

And while I’m at it - SusCnt, you need to change your name. My girlfriend looked over my shoulder when I was following the lives scores page yesterday, saw you name among the ‘comments’, added some vowels and thought I was surfing porn. Not good enough. Change it to Dewy Meadow or something.

  23. By Jocko on Jul 21, 2008 | Reply

Henry just tell your missus if she went to the gym more often you wouldn’t look at porn as much. maybe.

  24. By Chook on Jul 21, 2008 | Reply

Henry - My wife would prefer I look at porn than follow the DT scores all weekend.

  25. By Henry on Jul 21, 2008 | Reply

Chook - I’ve found that if I need to ‘hold on’ a bit longer with the missus, mentally calculating my rookie’s BEs is a good distraction. IMO.

Henry - Depends on the breakeven, I guess. A negative 40 can be a pretty sexy proposition.

Cheers, Dan, for ruining my afternoon.

I was looking at doing chad to guerra a couple of weeks back nut decided to hold onto chad til he is officially ruled out. glad i did as guerra has had a couple of deadset barry’s since.

will have to decide who to trade him to from here though since king is a useless injured dwarf.

I reckon i can think of something more unsportsmanlike like this week i am tanking im putting cox pav rooey, simmonds, bartel, cross, shaw and milburn on my bench so i loose and then give a percentage bust to my opponent so he overtakes my arch enemy and knocks him out of the top 4

Seems everyone got off the point of the topic! Joel Bowden, your a bloody legend! You know whats funny though…..no one is really bagging Bowden for doing what he did! I thought the Bomber fans would go nuts, but it looks as if old grumpy arse Sheahan (And warnie….you sook!) are the only ones who have a problem with Joels Decision!!! I say, rack up the points Bowden and ensure a win for a team who could have more impact on the finals than the Bombers! Good Post Vin!

brilliant mainly due to the fact it was against essendon, they have got enough lucky breaks and awesomeness over the years, im glad matthew knights was full of common sense when he was interviewed.
was listening to the radio when all the angry bombers supporters called in, god it was sad. seriously just pucker up and deal with it you whiny maggots

Shouldn’t a rushed behind be regarded as a clanger and negative DT points?
