Now there are many backmen who could be considered in an upgrade here. Andy Mackie and obviously Heath Shaw are great picks, and as we all have used up 90% of our trades in the backline, I’m sure you have had some of these guys at some stage. But around the DT talk gang, I have heard these names mentioned, so I thought I throw them out there to see what people reckon. Who would you get if you had the choice between…
Sam Fisher- the dearest out of this group at $355,100. Being playing well averaging 88 in his last 5 to go with a season average of 83.8. He enjoys chipping around that backline with his mate Goddard. He has 21k coaches and is a consistent non-injured possibility.
Joel Bowden- Has scored some great huge scores of late with a 180 followed by a nice 117, Joel is back to his usual tricks. After being dropped at the start of the year he has played the last 7 games and has averaged 87.1 this year. Is Joel back?
Brent Guerra - He has been on fire… despite his hammy injury he has averaged 99 in his last 5 this year and is owned by a very little 4,500 coaches. He is worth a very nice $325,000. The Goo is gooing off - Any takers?
Brendan Goddard- After injuring his knee last year, Goddard is back to where he left off. He only averages 81 this year but has averaged 8pts better a game in his last 5 (that’s 89 for those who can’t add). Will he get your vote?

i went goddard last week
By Tit-ed on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
Goo I think, but i just looked at my team and my backline worries will be over after the split round, except for injury this week, and I might be able to finaly upgrade Kreuzer, yay!
By Smerg on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
I don’t trust Wallace, especially for dropping Bowden earlier in the year. I’m also wary of players recently back from major knee injuries and hamstrings (see Nate Thom and Dew for examples) so would be wary of the Goo or Goddard.
So naturally the leaves Fish.
Having said that, I reckon if all were fit and reliably in their 22, I couldn’t go past Bowden. He’s a DT icon and served me well over the years.
By Warnie on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
Gooooooooo….. came into the Warne Dawgs and made me feel good last week!! Thanks big boy!
By Jacko on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
I would still go for Makie at Sam Fishers price.
The reason why Goddard and Fisher are doing so well is that Ross Lyon plays them more in the midfiled.
By sam on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
i had guerra from the start and then traded him when he got injuried…starting to wish i made my time back again
By Jesse on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
I would throw Johncock into the mix here, picked him up a fews wks ago and have been pleased. 89 over the last 5 games, $343,000.
From those above I picked Guerra, cannot go back to Bowden after he killed me at the start of the yr.

i like fisher consistent 80+ every week but neva scores ultra big but 80-110 each week is gd
By Raf on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
If I had trades left to upgrade my backline I’d take Guerra, Fisher, Goddard, Bowden that order. Bowden probably has higher scoring potential than Fisher and Goddard but I suspect that Wallace will crack it again with him at some point.
By Oaks on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
I have Heater and Fisher, so looking at trading Cornes out soon. I think he will go for surgery and until then he won’t score to his full potential. I’m tossing up between Bowden and Mackie. Obviously Bowden is more risky, who would you guys pick?
By Ausyid on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
i have had goddard for some time, and traded bowden in for chad before this round. would go for goddard out of those four.
By Bacon on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
I traded out Chornes for Gilbee last week, I reckon Lindsay is back to his best too.
But I’d go Goo from these, even if he’s likely to get suspended soon, being a Hawk and all.
By Tom on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
who else has had guerra from the start?? i know I have. i kept him when he injured his hammy and its paid off….oh yeahhhhh
By tyson on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
i would go guerra but i upgraded ibbo for mackie last week and i cant wait till the forward 1 comes out
By Brendan on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
Not Guerra since Warnie is bound to jinx him …
Fisher
By bobmurphy2 on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
ive got fisher, been very happy with him, hes really consistant and gives me 80+ each week. looking at upgrading one of my back to guerra.
By dylan on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
well i got fisher but if i had enough trades and thought guerra was not going to get injured i would go him. i think his the best of the lot followed by fisher.
By Ken on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
what is everyone’s backlines??
ive been so lucky and been unaffected by injuries
except for Guerra and Cornes earlier on in the year.
Ive got Shaw, Mackie, Guerra, Newman, Roughead, Gram and Wonaemirri
By daisy is a gun on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
ive got shaw, cornes, ellis, gram, fisher, bradshaw, bock and on bench anthony and ward
By BigHef on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
As I tried to reconstruct my backline I took Birchall and McMahon, but only for cash reasons.
I was super keen to get Goddard seeing the horrible style the Saints have going … can really rack them up as the end of the quarter approaches
By roy on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
shaw, goddard, osbourne, hargrave, mcloed, BOCK, king, proud. not great, but solid.
By Athomas on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
I got Goddard when he came back from injury, but I picked up Guerra this week.
My backs are actually quite good:
Shaw, Mattner, Johncock, Newman, Macdonald, Guerra, Goddard.
By Cam on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
Had fisher since round 1 and have been happy with him all year.
Whats with the Goddard pic? Copping a feel much…
My backline is Shaw, Fisher, Johncock, Mackie, Mattner, Osborne, Myers (Edwards and Nicoski on the pine). Looking at getting Birchall maybe this week for Nicoski.
By Disco on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
I’d look to upgrade all my Mids to guns first as none of the Backs are worth spending a valuable trade to upgrade, so long as you’re donut-free.
Bowden - no way, who knows what Terry Sunbed is going to do with him.
Fishfingered - have him, reliable.
Goddard - can ton-up but only scores 70-ish when not.
Goo-Rugga - season average of 91.4 if you exclude the match he got injured in. In very few DT teams, his team will play finals, plus the Hawks have a fairly good run home too - he’s my pick.
Newman is worth a look also, he has scored 4 tons.
By Jacko on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
I’ve got
H.Shaw, S.Fisher, B. Goddard, Chad, Symes, Ellis, Wonaeamirri, D.Myers and S.Thompson. Not fully gun but its soild.
By fryzie on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
on PAPER my backline is alright, Chad, Purgoyne, Shaw, Mattner, Ibbotson, Bradshaw, Milburn.. had planned on upgrading Ibbotson and Bradshaw but now I’m likely to have to fuck around with the Chad and Petey Burgoyne cos theyre all hurt n old n stuff.
Spewin.

Plus it looks like Goddard has had Mitch Hahn’s fist up him looking at the picture accompanying this article.
That would affect his DT scores, for sure.

I want my King-Bowden trade reversed. The worst bit was that Bowden came in the week after I traded him. I am NEVER getting Jake King again. Was going to upgrade Ellis to Fisher, but maybe Guerra now based on what I have read. I’d actually prefer to piss off King though because Ellis is only one of my two backs that has played all year.

Happy with my backline so far, on a good week everyone gets over 70 points and a few big ones so can’t argue with that given everyone’s troubles this year.
By Sheen on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
bobmurphy2. mackie missed 3 games with a quad earlier in the year i would expect geelong to put in as much game time as they can with him, leading to finals. gets plenty of the ball.

By Chook on Jul 3, 2008 | Reply
Wheatley is racking ‘em up at the mo. The ball will be in Melbourne’s back half a lot this year and he’s been tried in the middle a little bit too. If I had the cash/trades, I’d definitely be considering him.
Bowds’ 300 over the past two weeks has helped ease the pain he put me through earlier this year, when I stuck with him through his shitness and non-selection. Hope he keeps it up.
Bowden
Shaw
Milburn
Goddard
Chad
McLeod
Ellis
Obviously Chad and McLeod may not see the year out, and I’d love to upgrade Ellis. Yep, my backline is stinky. (But not as smelly as Calvin’s, or Mr No-Luck, as he should be known).

Jhoncock, Shaw, Bock, Mcmahon, Ellis, Nicoski, Sphanger & Riggio on bench.

Higgo - axe wonna. Lateral trade for McLeod or upgrade to el Guero. I’d wait a couple of Rounds thou, as the Chad might pull the pin for this season and have a crack at Uncle of the Year 2008 instead.
