Chook’s Rooks - Rd 10

Files under 2008 | Posted by Chook

No holiday romance analogies, no vague Charles Dickens comparisons and definitely no tenuous Cyndi Lauper references. This week’s Chook’s Rooks is a snack-sized edition, small enough to digest before this afternoon’s teams announcements. And an exciting afternoon it could be. If they’re named, there are four two-game rooks set to rocket upwards about $40,000. But will they hold their spot? If you think the answer is “don’t be a knob, Chook, of course not”, then you might be willing to take a risk on some attractive one-gamers. Read on for all the details.

Three-or-more gamers

The bubble might have burst, but you can still expect to generate some coin from Sharrod Wellingham (breakeven -13, average 70), Brad Ebert (be -7, avg 64), Paul Stewart (be -3, avg 45), Trent Cotchin (be 2, avg 59), Sam Lonergan (be 6, avg 52), David Myers (be 10, avg 55), Jarryn Geary (be 10, avg 59), Steven Browne (be 21, avg 60), Matt Riggio (be 22, avg 51), David MacKay (be 28, avg 51), David Armitage (be 36, avg 65) and Garrick Ibbotson (be 48, avg 74). Of course, that’s only the blokes who played last week. If they’re named, also look out for Scott D. Thompson, Jarrhan Jacky, Jake Edwards and Albert Proud, who all have negative breakevens but have averaged 40-50 in their matches thus far. Chris Masten certainly has a bit of growth left, too.

Now starting to near the summit, or starting to slide, are Nathan J. Brown, Tayte Pears, Chris Mayne, Harry Taylor, Kieren Jack, Henry Playfair, Clint Bartram, Matthew Kreuzer (earmarked for a rest), Rhys Palmer (yes, the golden boy is only a few weeks away from peaking), Austin Wonaeamirri, Cyril Rioli, Tim Callan and Kurt Tippett. The latter two, Callan and Tippett, both have breakevens in the 90s. With all this plateauing going on, it’s lucky there are a few foot soldiers from the two-game ranks ready to fight the good fight.

Two gamers

Last week, two Hawks and two Eagles played their second games of the season. The best average of the lot belongs to Jarryd Morton (fwd, breakeven -69, average 66), but there are major doubts over whether he and fellow two-gamer Josh P. Kennedy (ctr, be -48, avg 55) can retain their spots when the likes of Shane Crawford and Luke Hodge return. The two Eagle defenders stand on equally uncertain ground. If you reckon they’ll be around for a while, then Beau Wilkes (average 57) has a tasty be of -59 and Tim Houlihan (average 60) has a be of -58. If they all play and stick to their averages, all will rise by about $40,000 this week, except for Kennedy, who’s facing a $35,000 price jump. Also looking at a $40,000 price rise, if he plays, is the popular Shane Valenti (ctr/fwd).

One gamers

Not sold on the two gamers? Then add these blokes to your shopping list. Carlton unleashed Dennis Armfield last week, and the fleet-footed blonde responded with 77 DTs on debut. North Melbourne’s Gavin Urquhart was just as impressive with 70 points, while in-and-out-again Saint Matthew Ferguson scored 62. Less promising was Tom Lonergan, who managed just 42 points and must contend with Cam Mooney and Tom Hawkins for a place in the Cats’ forward line. All are backs for DT purposes, except for Armfield, who can also be picked in the centre.

Gaaaah, my plans for getting in medhurst all rely on wilkes getting named.

Whats his chances of playing regularly, looks like he could be the gun back that worsfield is looking for.

The Eagles boys might hang around for a few weeks.Masten is definitely back and with Waters gone for 2, Kennedy out for 3-4 and Rosa out for 6-8,some spots have opened up

I’ve pretty much decided that I must ditch Tippett for Valenti even if Valenti isn’t named (unless someone has the inside mail on another fwd rookie who might get named in the next few weeks?). Tippett is falling big-time, and Cox is on his way back up. I’d rather get done with a bench 0 for the rest of the season than miss the chance to get the Big Cox upgrade!

thanks chook, great post. If both are named, who should people get in (cos everyone will be asking it) valenti or morton?

Dew will have a dirty 26 hanging around his scores for the next few weeks which will drag any potential price rises down.

Also with doing his hammy twice now it is probably best leaving him alone unless you need a supersized set of quads to warm enough pine for two ordinary men!

hansen, Lecras, butler all available according to Worsfold - dont get too excited about Coaster Kids keeping their spots for long.

off topic I know but I am trying to get some goss about Andrew Mackie. Dont know much about him but he looks good. Had a good year last year too. I am wondering why he posted small scores in his first three games then turned on the gas? Obviously not too many know about him considering less then 4000 have him and he is the number 1 defender in the comp. Thoughts?

sorry fellas i forgot mackie was out after rd 2 with an injury. thinking of bringing him in for wona, could be a sensational move or an idiotic one.

hey i have tippett from adelaide and kennedy from west coast sitting on my bench. i am planing to get rid of kruzer and upgrade him to cox. for this to happen im going to need to trade either tippett or kennedy then get rid of browne so i can get cox and put my team average up by about 50. Should i keep kennedy or tippett?

Disappointed with the lack of Cyndi Lauper references….

Considering your team Jonathan and where you sit, I would say great move. Can have the odd dud score but can also rack up the monster score as well!
