Under 18 Championships

The Under 18 Championships are underway again and some of our future cash cows are out there doing their best to be picked up by an AFL club so that they can find a place in our Dream Teams for next year. It has been interesting to read the articles on the AFL Website - with it’s page dedicated to the U18 Championships. Apart from the scores, goalkickers and best… there has been some ‘expert opinion’ on some of the stand out players. Look out for the names of blokes who win the ball and take marks (kicking goals is a bonus too - especially when many rookies start as forwards). Champion Data’s Fantasy Freako is at every game taking the stats and working out DT scores. In this week’s newsletter, Vic Country’s Nick Suban cops a massive mention - 109 points in 4 x 20 min quarters. He’ll be in my team next year!

If you aren’t signed up to the Fantasy Freako email, then you should be! The Freak is doing some scouting for us at the moment - giving us DT points for some of these young blokes kicking around. Click here to sign up now.

DT Talk’s Premium Dream Team Draft

Files under Premium DT | 18 Comments

pdt.jpgAs you may have seen on the latest episode of our DT Talk Vidcast, we held our Premium Dream Team Draft last Sunday night. It was a fun evening with all the boys huddled around their laptops, keeping their potential selections close to their chest! The draft went really well, with Dean Cox going at number one and Chad Cornes at number two… would love to see how many drafts had that exact order!

People have requested it, so here it is - the transcript from our draft. Makes some interesting reading!

Please note: There was a problem with the draft from pick 107 to 154 (server trouble), so there were quite a few non selections or automated selections.

Operation Tackle?! Lots of 4 points!!

Files under General | 49 Comments

Tackles - 4 Dream Team PointsPretty much the best thing to do in an AFL game, apart from slotting a goal, is to tackle. This will get you four points… and if you do it well, you might get a free kick for (+1) and then get to take a kick (+3), that’s 8 Dream Team points!

This has come to my mind after reading this article on the Herald Sun Superfooty website. Collingwood racked up 55 tackles in the first half last week against Geelong and finished with 85 for the game. Pretty awesome stuff! The Blues are looking to do the same against the Cats this week… which is fantastic news for Carlton players in our Dream Team!

Bring it on!!

Chook’s Rooks - rd 9

Files under Chook's Rooks | 34 Comments

Cyndi Lauper loves Sharrod Wellingham. She doesn’t mind his Collingwood teammate Nathan J. Brown, either. But the 80s pop starlet isn’t a fan of fellow rookies Steven Browne or Garrick Ibbotson. Now, Lauper has a rubbish national ranking, (after all, the girl just wants to have fun), so you can discount most of what she says about Dream Team. But, on this occasion, her affection for blokes like Wellingham and Brown is well placed.

Why does she love them? Well, in their first two games - the precious time DT coaches have to window-shop rookies before their first price rise - we saw their true colours shining through. Wellingham, for example, scored well in his first two games and then, last weekend, added a third impressive outing to his budding playing career. I reckon Eddie’s not even that pissed now that the drink-driving youngster cost the club its $500,000 sponsorship with TAC. Brown might not be a DT star like Wellingham, but you at least knew what you were getting when you picked him up. It’s not like he busted out a couple of big scores and then turned into the 20-point turd he is today. No, Brown has been a turd from day one, unlike his almost-namesake Browne, from Carlton. Steven dropped a couple of 70s in his first two games, enticing thousands of coaches to trade in the Blues backman. True colours? I don’t think so. Since then, Browne has failed to crack the half century, let alone pull another 70-pointer. Essendon defender David Myers and Sydney forward Henry Playfair are others to bomb after impressing in their crucial first two matches. Myers’ record reads 56, 66 and then, bom-bom, 22, while Playfair notched a 63 and 82 before turning in a terrible 19. More like Henry Playunfair.

Guys like Ibbotson are just as bad. The Docker half-forward, who can be selected in your DT defense, debuted with a 42 and followed up with a 57. A lot of coaches passed him up based on those less-than-impressive numbers. Of course, Ibbotson has been a stud since then, racking up an average of 86 points per game, placing him in the top five defenders in the game over that period. So, rookies, for the sanity of us DT coaches, listen to Cyndi. Don’t be afraid, to let us see your true colours.

Read on for the weekly breakdown of rookies by games played.

Calvin’s Captains - Rd 10

Calvin’s Captains

This week I’ve jazzed it up a little and to the delight of Mathman, I have added percentages to go with the averages! That will get his decimals tingling! Ok, so, this week it looks like this. Goodwin - 113 (average Vs opponent in last 3) and then (78%) is the percentage of times he has scored 90+ so far in 2008.  I hope I have some players that get ya going!! Enjoy. (more…)
