Chook’s Rooks with a Twist

Files under 2008 | Posted by Chook

He might’ve been a cruel bastard, but I reckon Fagin, the infamous criminal overlord created by Charles Dickens, would have been one heck of a Dream Team coach. If your idea of classic literature is a three-line Powaflag08 post on BigFooty, you mightn’t know that, in the classic novel Oliver Twist, the ruthless Fagin would kick the title character and other young kids out into the mean streets of 19th century London with one simple threat: get me some cash or I’ll bust your balls. Fast-forward to 2008, and thousands of DT coaches across Australia are barking the same instructions at their rookie cash cows.

This is no time for misplaced kindness or sentimentality, with prices poised to soar for rooks playing their third game this weekend. You might think Adelaide rookie Patrick Dangerfield has a cool name, but the lad is in no danger of being on field for the Crows anytime soon, so swap him for Jarryn Geary, Patrick Bird or Cale Morton before lockout tomorrow. Read on for more rookie bolters, listed by position.

Backs: Decent young defenders are almost as difficult to unearth this year as rucks, with most potential money-makers axed after the first round (Scott D. Thompson), or making their debuts in round 2 (Albert Proud, Garrick Ibottson and Darren Pfeiffer). You can take a chance on one of those boys if they’re named tonight, or pick up one of the two-gamers, like Nathan J. Brown or Heath Grundy. To be honest, there’s not a lot of value here, so only downgrade to one of these blokes if you really stuffed up the original selection of your backline. By that I mean you went into the season with DT disasters like Leigh Fisher, Toby Thurstans and Jacob Surjan on board.

Centres: The forwards look pretty flash this year, but the real money is still in the middle. To see dollar signs this week, bring in Jarryn Geary, Craig Bird, Kieren Jack, Cale Morton, Travis Tuck or Sam Lonergan. You can wait another week before nabbing Rhys PalmerChris Masten (ankle concern) or Brad Ebert, though, as they’ve only laced up once so far.

Rucks: You’re only trading rookies in at this point to make a bag-load of dough, so it’s hardly worth mentioning Trent West, the Geelong rookie ruck who’ll make a smidgen of what the boys above and below will. Of course, top pick Matthew Kreuzer is set to debut this weekend.

Forwards: After averaging 89 over the opening two weeks of the season, Josh Hill has become one of the biggest trade targets in recent DT history. The fact that many of this year’s injuries have been to forwards helps his lot, too. Elsewhere, the Hawks have a couple of bolters in Cyril Rioli (recommended) and Cameron Stokes (risky), while Ryan Gamble looks set to continue his fine scores as long as he can hold his place in the Cats side. Kurt Tippett reeks of KPP, which generally translates to poor DT scoring, so I’d consider the others first.

So, if you’re keen on adopting another youngen’ who’ll bring in the dough this week - Oliver Twist style - you’ll do best to pick from the bunch below.

  1. Josh Hill
  2. Jarryn Geary
  3. Cyril Rioli
  4. Craig Bird
  5. Travis Tuck

Thereabouts: Ryan Gamble, Kurt Tippett, Kieren Jack, Cale Morton and Trent West.

Of course, don’t do anything until the teams are announced… um… about now.

Nice work Chook! Just waiting on the sides at the moment… and keen to see positions for some final trade thoughts! I want Hill… I wish there was some hope in the backline, but alas - there is nothing there!

thankfully i’ve got geary, rioli and tuck. so i might bring in josh hill for brisbane’s lachlan henderson.

  4. GravatarBy BrayDog on Apr 3, 2008 | Reply

I’ve got Rioli, Gamble, West, Bird, Tuck and Tippett (if plays) set to rise this weekend.

Although missed out Geary and Hill, but I think the others will do enough for me.

For Braydog. I know you’ve got some other great rookies on your list but are you sure that you want to pass Hill up ? Is there any way that you can squeeze him in ? I personally think he is a must because he looks very steady and will probably play most games.

Forward line consists of BJ, Buddy, Brown, Tredrea, Nath Thompson, Tommy Hawkins, Gamble, Tippett and Rioli.

So, really the only possible trade would be for Hawkins, but being a Geelong fan its hard to trade him out.

No Scott Thompson or Lachie Hanson this week. Shattered.

….no lachie? whats going on deano you professional tool. the hawks gonna roll them anyway….jimmy sellar gonna play soon? trade him out for jhill?

  8. GravatarBy BrayDog on Apr 3, 2008 | Reply

Good work S Selwood, making the derby this weekend. Good game to get first up :)

i’ve got reilly with a broken wrist (5 wks) but thinking about hanging on to him since the league head to heads (all im interested in) don’t start until round 4. so would only carry him for 2 or 3 head to head games.

but also thinking i should maybe trade him out for marc murphy, or james kelly.

    so two trades this week:
    hill in for brisbane’s henderson

and either osborne in for someone
or reilly out for murphy or kelly or someone

    thoughts people??

    Kreuzed into selection.

    He got a game. =)

    Hey hohoho,

Definently trade Reilly for Murphy, not Kelly.
If you haven’t used any trades so far (ie in Rnd 1) then trade for Hill, but otherwise I’m not so sure.

Btw Chook, Who is Patrick Bird?

  13. GravatarBy hohoho on Apr 3, 2008 | Reply

    haven’t used any trades yet.
    so the 1st will be:
    henderson out, hill in.

    with 1 trade left either:
    one of my backmen -
    (PTA) 1. CORNES, Chad
    $439,600
    (RIC) 2. BOWDEN, Joel
    $413,400
    (HAW) 3. GUERRA, Brent
    $331,300
    (SYD) 4. KENNELLY, Tadhg
    $283,600
    (ESS) 5. LOVETT-MURRAY, Nathan
    $272,600
    (ADE) 6. SYMES, Brad
    $264,900
    (WCE) 7. NICOSKI, Mark
    $208,500

Substitutes S. Thompson (KAN) Selwood (WCE)

one of them for thornton or osborne??

or the other trade is reilly for murphy or stevens. mid midfield is currently:
    (HAW) 8. MITCHELL, Sam
    $410,500
    (ADE) 9. REILLY, Brent
    $327,400
    (KAN) 10. SWALLOW, Andrew
    $296,500
    (CAR) 11. STEVENS, Nick
    $237,200
    (ESS) 12. HOULI, Bachar
    $196,800
    (HAW) 13. TUCK, Travis
    $138,100

    Substitutes Morton (MEL) Geary (STK)

obviously Reilly was on the bench in Rd2 for Geary.

    hey guys,

I have issues with my backline, esp cause lovett-murray is out!

i have both A.Hartlett and S.Thompson as rookie backmen (both on my bench.)

I would like to trade one of them out for either A.Proud, or S.Selwood, to cover for lovett-murray’s exclusion/injury.

So who should I trade? And Proud or Selwood?

    Thanks!

going to drop judd for either: tuck, geary or jack

    already have palmer and bird

i know many people are hanging on to judd, but would like another rook in the middle?

    suggestions?

  16. GravatarBy Warnie on Apr 3, 2008 | Reply

geary is the go to man in my opinion.. then jack, then tuck…

  17. GravatarBy Muscat FC on Apr 3, 2008 | Reply

im thinking jack will likely get more game time than tuck and geary over the course of the year, hawks/saints supporters?

  18. GravatarBy hohoho on Apr 3, 2008 | Reply

seeing as lovett murray is named as an out for essendon with a groin (DOES ANYBODY KNOW HOW LONG?!? he wasn’t listed as injured during the week) then maybe leaning towards the thornton or osborne in for lovett murray, and trying to ride out the reilly injury.

    thoughts??

Fwds: Pav, J.Brown, S.Johnson, Deledio, Hall, Porps, Tredrea, Gamble, Rioli.

No trades yet. Trade one of the above for Hill or resign myself to missing the bandwagon (and hope Hill gets injured while on a donut so price doesn’t change)?

BrayDog for a guy giving so mch ‘expert’ advice 24/7 your team is pretty crappy especially that forward line you put up there!

  21. GravatarBy the wallcob on Apr 3, 2008 | Reply

dont get rid of judd. once he hits his straps it wont matter hes playing in a shit team like carlton. and it shouldnt take him too long now..

  22. GravatarBy the wallcob on Apr 3, 2008 | Reply

immmm not haaapppyyy! , iv run out of patience with mark bloody coughlan. figure the dick will never play afl again aha. atm hes on my bench along with geary. my midfielders on the field are bartel, thompson, judd, stevens, nicoski and pamler. im thinking of fucking off coughlan for bird. and then freeing up alot of dough and burning the injureed raines for a real GUN defender. i have pfereffer or however the fuck you spell it on the field for backs..with the DONUTS of hansen and j.edwards(this week) warming the pine.thoughts???

  23. GravatarBy BrayDog on Apr 3, 2008 | Reply

@ Matt. yeah, I’m a SC man, and am ranked 208th in that. I don’t pay alot of attention to DT in the preseason and just picked a side and left it at that. tried tweaking it in that last hour and could only get 2/3 trades done. I do have a cool 100k sitting in the bank, aswell.

@ hohoho. I would just do the first trade you mentioned at leave it that, but appretanly I’m not allowed an opinion cause my forward line sucks. So don’t listen to me. =P

@ the wallcob. yeah, get rid of Coughlan for Bird or even Tuck before the rise. And, yeah, then see what ya do with Raines.

  26. GravatarBy adam on Apr 3, 2008 | Reply

who would you trade in out of these guys…

    marc murphy
    clint young
    james kelly
    or
    simon goodwin

i have enough $$ for any

  27. GravatarBy Chook on Apr 3, 2008 | Reply

The Wallcob… I rank Bird (yes, Craig, not Patrick!) ahead of Jack simply because I think Jack will get more run-with roles, while Bird will be free to rack ‘em up in the middle. At least, that’s sort of what happened last week. Of course, Bird was stuck in a pocket all of round one and scored accordingly. Here’s hoping that doesn’t happen again soon.

For the record, the rookies in my squad are Hill, Rioli and Gamble (fwds), Palmer, Geary and Bird (ctrs), West (rucks), Proud and Thompson (backs).

  28. GravatarBy Chook on Apr 3, 2008 | Reply

    Adam… Marc Murphy, mate.

  30. GravatarBy Chook on Apr 3, 2008 | Reply

Hey Dion… tempted by Stokes, who’ll make a heap of coin this week, but Rioli is a safer bet. Stokes’ll get dropped before Rioli does.

  31. GravatarBy dion on Apr 3, 2008 | Reply

Thanks Chook :) i have rioli in my team now. yeah stokes was tepmting because 10k cheaper and breakeven is better but rioli should stay in the side.i wuz at the NAB semi final and he impressed me! has fantastic goal sense! scary hawthorn hav lewis back this week and crawf back next week! cats v hawks grandfinal? when wuz the last?
