The Round 3 Dilemma

Files under 2008 | Posted by The Saint

DT Talk welcomes a new writer on board today, The Saint. Here is his first entry. Enjoy!

So I guess it is now that everyone starts to think, who should I trade in to get some value into my team before the price rises? And who should I chop before their price goes south?

The big mistake that a lot of people make in these situations is looking only at the short term, and not remembering that there is only a limited amount of trades.

I bet a lot of people have thought long and hard about bringing in players such as Travis Tuck, Jarryn Geary, and many more names that I will mention later. Yes both of those players values will increase dramatically after round 3, but will they be around for long enough to see large increases that make a difference?

Hawthorn is missing a few key midfielders with suspension, and all it will take is 2 bad weeks for tuck to be sitting in the 2’s once again, and for him to be stuck on your bench scoring 0’s.  Same with Geary.  As St.Kilda regains players such as Brendan Goddard and Matt Maguire, Geary will find that just 1 or 2 bad games will see him back with Casey for a long stint. These young kids are given a go, and are playing well, but unless they perform every single week, they will find it hard to keep their place in the side. Others to be careful with are, Sam Lonergan, Ryan Gamble, Cameron Stokes, etc (Unless you already have them. If this is the case, you are laughing right now)The safer options would be the high draft picks such as Rhys Palmer, Matthew Kreuzer and Cale Morton, even if they haven’t played as much as the others to date, because you know they will be persisted with through the ups and downs, all year long.

As for the big guns, don’t be afraid to cop a little bit of a price drop from players such as Jonno Brown etc.  They are players who will gain that value back over the course of the year, and they should be players who stay in your team for 22 weeks, barring injury or horrific form, such as Steve Johnson’s form or Scott Lucas’ injury.  Do not do the panic trade.  This rarely works.

The Saint.

Not a bad article apart from the Johnson comment.

The Saint, what do you think of brining in Michael Osborne for Jordan Mcamhon? the reasons im considering this are, Price is positive when trading both, 2 100+ scores for Osborne and Mcamhon 74 and a 43..Will Osborne play once a few key Hawks come back?

    Cheers

I dont think Ryan Gamble is going anywhere soon….

SJ, johnsons form is not too bad. I was referring to his dream team form which is well below his price tag, and with plenty of other players of a similar price doing much better, a trade is a definite option. Not enough consistancy.

Young gun, looking at the stats its a good trade, because u gain money and osbornes value will increase after this round. But you have to be careful. Osborne will most likely get a game, but bad form for 2 weeks would see him dropped when hawthorns at full strength. Bret thornton is also similar price and similar scores so far and will play every week.

Maybe free up some cash elsewhere, and look at getting a gun? It all depends on your team balance.

  5. GravatarBy The Saint on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

I hope you are right DRuz. But this is geelong we are talking about! They have 28 suitable players for 22 spots.

  6. GravatarBy young gun on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

yer im wrking on mr fwd line currently just thought i could get some cash from the Osborne trade, thing is with thornton i have 4 carlton players already (2 in my 22)..with that would you still suggest Thornton?

leunberger 4 cox while leavin my backline wit nathan brown(collingwood 1)barlow n schofield all on the field is it really worth getting cox n not fixing my backline???

I really dont understand people wanting to trade established players because of a couple of bad games. Brown got 66 on the weekend. If he didnt do that once in a while he would average 130! S Johnson will come good. Goodes had a stinker in round 1 and then was terrible for a half on the weekend but managed to pick up 60 pts in the second half still not playing that well.

Quality is quality. A good player, even with bad form, will NOT drop his average by more than 10ppg.

Now is the time to get the rookies you missed.

For me its Hill in for Hartlett and thats it.

DONT waste trades by trading good players for equivilent players. What a waste!

Young Gun…you are right about wanting to stay away from too many carlton players! They are no geelong.

Nathan…i see cox as an essential part of any dream team. He was the first player i picked. Along with the cornes’s and jimmy. But it all depends on what you think will be best value for your team.

Shane…I 100% agree. I only said steve johnson in my case, because i have 90,000 in the bank, have all the good rookies i want, and would prefer B. Johnson or Chappy cos they are more consistant. If you read what i said, i 100% agree. Never trade the guns unless they are injured or have a horrific form slump. They are 22 week players.

  11. GravatarBy Besty on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

Shane, I see the S Johnson issue very differently - the guy was good last season because he had a point to prove after his bad behaviour. How did he score in seasons before that?? With the development of kids like Hawkins, Gamble & Stokes - plus the fact that they have goal kicking midfielders such as Ablett, I am not convinced S Johnson will be as good as last season. You cannot compare him to Brown, Riewoldt, Pav & the other established forwards where I agree with your comments on quality.

He has a price tag of $410k after all, and I just feel it is a little unjustified on the back of one decent consistent season.

just out of curiosity The Saint if you were in my position who would you pick?

  13. GravatarBy Warnie on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

DT prices purely go straight from last years averages (apart from injured seasons, etc)… so, Steve Johnson is priced straight up from his 07 average… however he did miss quite a few games early on from a club suspension. I wouldn’t have paid that much for him!!

Hi there, I have a defence problems. I have 3 players Anthony, Hansen and Thompson(nth) who didn’t play and not sure when or if they will play. Should I trade for Taylor(Geelong)or should I trade up as I have $198,000 cash.

Sainter. I am looking at getting rid of Paddy Ryder for a higher scoring back. I’m thinking Bock, King or Thornton. Leaning toward Thornton or Bock what do you think? Is thornton playing a different role other than punch and spoil this year? Or is Bock a better safe option for 80 each week due to his game time and style of play?

your thoughts on craig bird ive got selwood and am going to trade him out? also your thoughts on meesen probably bad idea trading him out for west he will only make me 40k if ottens stays out

Besty - why did you pick him in the first place then?

  18. GravatarBy nathan on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

malthouse sed that john anthony will definantly play this yr but that might only b a few games bcoz of browns gr8 start

does any1 no how long le cras is out 4?

  19. GravatarBy The Saint on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

Young gun…depends on ur team. Id probably either trade down for a rookie or trade up for a gun. But osborne is my pick if ur staying around a similar price.

Warnie…I agree. i took a risk, it backfired, i lose a trade cos of it. Thats my punishment for choosing such a dud. haha who wouldnt want chappy or bj instead.

Virginia…Ask me that question after the teams are named! That is rule number 1.

Junta…Watch more DT Talk episodes for news on bocky! Thornton getting a lot of uncontested backwards kicks.

  20. GravatarBy The Saint on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

Ben…read the article above. Dont make trades for only 40k value. I have meesen as my 4th ruck aswell. U only need 1 decent back up ruck really. West will only play when there are injuries to ottens and blake. Full stop. And don’t make ur other trade till teams are named! Thats rule number 1.

Anyone else having troubles identifying a decent backman under $150K.

All the options (Proud, Hansen, Thompson, Brown, Selwood, Taylor, Lonergan, Lower, Head, Myers, Ibbotson, Anthony, Dawson, Pfieffer, Hartlett) have been somewhat disappointing due to not being picked or poor scores or suspension.

Who are the most promising 2 or 3?

I have Proud, Thompson and Selwood but I feel I need someone more reliable.

  23. GravatarBy Warnie on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

    Help with the following trades…
i have 132k in the bank.

    Albert Proud OUT….Osbourne IN
    Van Berlo OUT…..James Kelly IN

RE: LeCras - he is out for 5-6 weeks
swap him out for hill i would suggest

  27. GravatarBy Morts on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

Yeah Le Cras is out for a minimum of 4 weeks, probably more.

I’m really struggling with my backline, its my achilles heel at the moment. I got some good players but my cheaper players are killing me.

Thornton, Bowden, Guerra, Symes, Cornes, Jones are pretty sweet but then Hartlett, Edwards and Thompson.

Edwards is no certainty to play this week and Hartlett may not walk back in for round 4 and who knows about Thompson. I’m thinking of picking up Osborne or Ellis for probably Hartlett or Thompson (check teams this week first) but to do so I need to free up cash by getting rid of Aaron Edwards for Josh Hill.

Anyone see a problem with that?

  28. GravatarBy ryz on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

shane, have a look at ed barlow? looked pretty tight and if you got the green to spare should give you some in return.

also i got tippett, they say hes done ligament damage to the knee. thinking of trading him for josh hill, then straight up j brown style, getting hill while hes hot, gettin the increase then hopefully browny gets torched for another round and drops a bit? j brown is by far most dominant player i recon but is it worth the 2 trades early on? i got some money in the bank and my strats based on saving some trades…?

  29. GravatarBy Scott on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

The saint, good informative article. I have Nathan Jones in my midfield and needs a 65 next week to break even let alone rise in value. If i put him up for trade i’ll have $438k to play with, should I trade him for Kelly or Clinton Young? Any other options?

  30. GravatarBy Besty on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

Shane - I underestimated the quality of some of Geelong’s young guys, with N Ablett gone I thought S Johnson would become even more important. I think the first 2 weeks have demonstrated they have lots of options up front. Net net, I think I stuffed up - was agonising over this decision before the season started vs picking Brown or BJ.

    Geelong supporters??

Little help if possible, tough to keep up to date in fiji. I am happy with my rookies, but have a stacked forward line. Tossing up trading cloke down for medhurst or lindsey thomas, then trading up hansen (bench) for thornton. The thomas trade would leave me some change, but have never seen him play. Any help?

  32. GravatarBy Mighty_bombers on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

Thinking of getting rid of a forward to pick up Josh Hill , who do u think i should trade off ,as i need the cash to get a backline player as i am a player short with Hartlett , Myers , S.thomp not playing , my forwards are Hall , Fev , J.Brown , Rioli , N.Thompson , Lloyd , and aker (bench Tippett and Gamble)

  33. GravatarBy The Saint on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

    Looks pretty good morts.

Not happy about tippett. But he will come back. Adelaide talls are rank!

Thanks scott. As for ur trades, im very hesitant to trade gun midfielders for the very reason i wrote in my article. Im sticking with salopek after two 75’s.

van berlo 4 james kelly is good as 4 proud 4 osbourne it depends how good ur back stocks r

  37. GravatarBy Shane on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

KKK - I would suggest Hill for Le Cras.

I would keep Van Berlo. He will be good enough to be in you final 22 come the Grand Final.

If Proud is picked this week - keep him.

You will have only used 1 trade with $360K in the bank. This then will allow you to use only 2 trades in trading performing rookies for 2 guns in 5-6 weeks time.

Injuries aside in 5-6 weeks you could have only used 3 trades and upgraded 2 rookies to guns. Great spot to be.

Betsy i’m stuck with that SJ dillema as well, took a punt on him at the start of the season and it hasn’t paid off! choosing him over o’keefe has been my biggest mistake so far, it just looks like they have too many options down there.

Thinking of jumping ship from SJ - ROK and Pearce - Murphy. I know it seems like a waste of trades but pearce and SJ just don’t look like scoring much better

    Shane,
i traded LeCras for Hill last week.
so thats why i have 130k in the bank now.

was hoping to cash in on osbourne and kelly.
    my backline is as follows:
    C.Cornes
    gilbee
    milburn
    h.Shaw
    Nicoski
    Gram
    Proud
(s thompson and N.brown on bench)

so i figure if i could trade osbourne for Proud that would pretty much have my backline settled

Im thinking about trading Judd for Murphy. I do agree with the theory about not wasting trades on like players, but Judd prob won’t really hit top form until mid year and Murphy is loving the lack of opposition attention. I’ll also make a little bit of cash of it. Any suggestions?

Should i trade Cloke out for Hill which would allow me to trade Gilmore for Cox, or should i trade Tippett for hill and do nothing?

I really need Cox can you see anyway i can get him?

    This my team:
Backs: Cornes, Shaw, Birchall, Guerra, Kennely, Symes, Ellis (proud, edwards)

Centres: Cross, Priddis, N.Jones, Gibbs, Stevens, Palmer (Masten, Bird)

    Rucks: Gilmore, Simmonds (Krezuer, Tippett)

Forwards: Pavlich, Brown, Cloke, Deledio, Hall, Porplyzia, Rioli (gamble, tippett)

what trades could i do to get Cox in there? I have 20k in the bank.

  48. GravatarBy The Saint on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

KerrKetamineKlub…im worried about kelly. Geelong do have an awesome midfield. What if they stop getting 460 possies in a game? Bartel and Corey wont suffer, it will most likely be a player like kelly. Saying that, id prefer him over van berlo. Just a matter of if its worth using a trade.

Aydo…sounds good. Or if u have those guys, maybe pav or riewoldt? who still score 80 on their bad days.

And might bombers, every1 thinks that at a stage. But thats the fun of dream team. It’s not just a 1 week wonder. Its 22 weeks of tactics and analysis!

  49. GravatarBy MBP on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

Is it worth trading Aaron Davey for J. Porplezia? This would leave me with $100k & possibly the option of trading up Porplezia for a Johnson/Pavlich & co later in the year?

  52. GravatarBy Mighty_bombers on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

Yeah id take Kelly over VB as Kelly wont get tagged much as the other players around him

  53. GravatarBy Mighty_bombers on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

keep T.Cloke as medhurst and Thomas is a small pocket player and you dont know when you got them .

  54. GravatarBy Shane on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

Again - at this stage of the game you should only be trading to get a rookie that you missed (eg Hill) or to replace a longer term injury (eg Lucas).

Guys like Osborne and Kelly have started the year well but the chances are they will not become 100ppg players.

My rule of thumb is that you need to be making a minimum of $100K per trade.

Eg: Van Berlo to Kelly will not make you $100K. VB will end up averaging minimum 80ppg and Kelly, at very best, 90ppg. A profit, at best, of around $40K. Dont waste a trade for $40K.

Eg: Drummond out for 4-5 weeks. Cost $388K. You could trade him for Thornton and pick up $140K plus the rise Thorton makes. If he averages 75ppg which seems conservative then you make another $70 to $80K. A profit from that trade of over $200K.

  55. GravatarBy The Saint on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

t-train…Thornton will eventually stop scoring highly. Well i hope. haha and as for lindsay thomas, he’s exciting but i dont know if his consistancy will be there.

nathan…why so much in the salary cap!!?? make sure u have cox in the ruck and upgrade 1 of ur average backs to a star like heath shaw, or another proven dream team performer.

I’m thinking of trading S Johnson (GEE) for Hill (WB) and possibly either P Burgoyne (PA) for Thorton (CAR) or one of my rookies for Thorton. Then round 4-6 I’ll upgrade a forward and back for gun players like Pav and whoever in the back like Bowden. Any opinions on this?

  58. GravatarBy Shane on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

    Yes.

Dont trade Johnson or Burgoyne. WASTE.

2 weeks doesnt make a season.

You picked these 2 players as year long players ie: they will be in your GF team. Keep them they will come good and end up averaging what you paid for them.

Imagine if you traded Hall (48 to 106) or Dyson (20 odd to 100) or Gram (20 odd to 100) last week.

  59. GravatarBy Ed on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

I’m just a bit worried about them because they both had great years in 2007 but prior to that they were average-good scorers (took a bit of a risk/rode a bit of hype picking them).

They’re both also priced highly and if I can trade them (more in particular Steve Johnson) for someone more consistent and at the same time pick up some more cash then I could be better off and lessen the risk waiting for S Johnson and P Burgoyne to come good.

They would be slightly wasted trades but I’ll still be making money out of them and then also replacing them with more consistent players in a couple of weeks time.

Hmmm, I’m now thinking I could keep them both, trade a player like Schammer for a rookie midfielder and upgrade a rookie back to Thorton.

    I don’t know…

  60. GravatarBy scott on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

i am coming 61st overall and am very happy with my team except - steve johnson. i have a rule never to trade my gun players which i pick from the start of the year but am thinking he just doesn’t look the goods and the extra cash i’ll pick up could be worth the trades. therefore i’ll bring in hill for steve johnson then maybe thornton for hartlett and have a fair chunk of cash left. any thoughts????

  61. GravatarBy Muscat FC on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

This Hill dilemma is really getting to me, i want him in but already have gamble and tippet on bench and don’t want to get rid of him. Everyone in my fwd line is doing well and don’t want to chop any, except maybe N.Thompson? unsure about him.

    Backs: P.Borgoyne, B.Jones, J.Gram, B.Symes, M.Mattner, Bradshaw, Proud (Scott DT, Selwood).

Mids: Cross, Ablett, Kerr, Judd, Stevens, Houli (Palmer, Bird).

    Ruck: Simmonds, King (Messen, Kruezer).

Fwds: Pavlich, B.J, J.B, Burton, Deledio, Porps, N Thompson (Gamble, Tippet).

As you can see my backs are a bit weak, but really wanted a gamble on most of them. Picked P.Burgoyne as my solid…thus far he has been everything but.

Judd is the weak link i the midfield

Do i trade Hill in for Thompson?
Do i trade Judd for Black or Goodwin
Do i trade out Burgoyne or will he get better?

And considering my week back line should i upsize one of the rookies to maybe a thornton or osbourne?

only have 30k in bank so we need to to make some cash off thompson for hill or judd for sombody, or burgoyne?

  62. GravatarBy PIKESTAR on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

Im sticking with steve johnson this week
yea his price will drop but the cats are playing melbourne this week and im tipping another 100 point flogging. possibly a similar result to the cats v tigers game last year. Johnson will come good.

  63. GravatarBy scott on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

muscat i would change burgoyne for thornton, judd for kieran jack or thompson for hill/rioli this week. then in the next two weeks bring in chad cornes and kane cornes when their prices drop.

  64. GravatarBy Shane on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

MuscatFC - the only trades I believe you should CONSIDER would be Hill in for Tippett (assess his injury). And in my opinion Tippett will only average 30ish at best.

The other is trading one of Proud/Thompson/Selwood for a playing rookie if they all arent picked this week.

In reality if one of P/T/S plays then you my friend are one of the lucky ones who doesnt need to trade at all.

  65. GravatarBy scott on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

  67. GravatarBy The Saint on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

Shane you are spot on. Everyone should be looking at their rookies, and rookies they want, and making sure they have 22 playing before thinking of anything else.

Guys the only reason im trading Steve J (POSSIBLY) is because i havent traded yet, and i have hill, gamble, tippet, rioli, bird, jack, kreuzer, scotty dt and harlett on my bench/ground already. Everyone should be making all these rookies and palmer in a weeks time, their priority.

  68. GravatarBy Muscat FC on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

thanks guys, yeh tippet is an option to go for hill…, but he looks set for a decent year…you might be right about the 30-40 if he continues playing FF, but looks like he will ruck a bit too.

I dunno bout the hole Cox craze..i traded him out last year…really worth it u think?

Is Judd worthy of the chop do you think for Black or goodwin?

And Burgoyne going to keep dropping you think…im unsure about thorton because i have a feeling scotland or carrazo will maybe push to that role with judd and stevens in the midfield this year??

  69. GravatarBy Muscat FC on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

yeah your right scott…i should be thinking ahead…maybe thompson for hill…and then save some cash for judd to k cornes when he drops. Providing Judd dosen’t get another 50 score.

And maybe hold off on backs for a little? most of those backs should rise except for Burgoyne

Seems like a waste of 2 players that will go up

Im thinking maybe jsut tippet for Hill, being a crow supporter im probably just bias, need to shake it off.

  72. GravatarBy Shane on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

The Saint is correct. Those who didnt have him in their original side should take a good hard look at themselves in the mirror!

For mine the essential rookies at this stage seem to be:

    Hill, Rioli, Gamble, Palmer

Jury is still out with the rest - especially the backs.

  73. GravatarBy KerrKetamineKlub on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

    Saint…can you explain for me..
why should rookies be a priority when
people like thornton and osbourne will be going up just as much after massive 2 games.

do rookies go up more initially??
then selling them off for other rookies makes more $$?

  74. GravatarBy KerrKetamineKlub on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

    so instead of trading
    van berlo for Kelly…
would you trade VB for a rookie?

  75. GravatarBy Muscat FC on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

Well i dunno about a good hard look, i would have considered it except i was liking the prices of simmonds and king, has paid off thus far.

And KKK i rekon VB is good, plus with reilley and knights out…and goodwin and edwards playing up front, he is likely to be in the middle most of the year. Only thing is he is tagging now with shirley out….i would stay the course with him for a while.

  76. GravatarBy Muscat FC on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

goddam you cox people….you have screwed with my vision

Even tho deledio is going good, should i drop him for hill and then upgrade king to Cox Saint?

Seems odd dropping decent players and then leaving tippet and n thompson in my side?

  77. GravatarBy The Saint on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

There are many reasons. Now if u already had someone like thornton, good 4 u. But he will eventually level out or at most gain a little bit of value.

Someone like hill or rioli, averaging between 70 and 90…they have started at 80,000. An average like that leads them to 300,000. thats a gain of 220,000 hopefully. Before they bottom out. even 150,000 to be safe.

Someone like thornton to gain 150,000 would have to average 100 every week all year. Making sense?

I have something to go do now, but i can explain more later if u like. Also, rookies can jsut sit on ur bench and build value. even if only scoring 40-50 a week.

Man my team is struggling BADLY but I dont think it’s that bad ! I know I have to do 2 trades this week in order to become a little more competitve I just got no idea which ones.

Im pretty happy with my ruckmen.

    Backline:

    H.Shaw
    Milburn
    C.Cornes
    Lovett Murray
    Nicoski
    Bradshaw
    Edwards

    Brown (Coll)
    Dawson

    MID:

    Chapman
    Kerr

    Forwards:

    Franklin
    B Johnsons
    J Brown
    Pavlich
    Hall
    Fevola
    Rioli

    Tippet

On paper i reckon the side is awesome… however It doesnt work for me :-(

44,000 in the bank and in desperate need of help

    get Hill from the doggies

  80. GravatarBy Shane on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

KKK - Rookies are a priority at this stage because if you miss the good ones now you will never get them and make the real big $$$.

Eg: those that missed Davey or Selwood or Smith last year really cost themselves.

Rookies are trade bait and rarely end up in your best 22. Guys like Thornton will go up in value but not by as much as a good rookie. Also there is the risk with Thornton that he will average 70ppg and you will only have to trade him again later.

Thornton is $250 and if he averages say 80ppg he will go up $100K where as Hill who is $103K averages 60ppg he will go up $160K.

  81. GravatarBy Ed on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

You can get good rookies the whole way through the season. Obviously there are a lot more that debut early in the year, but don’t hurt yourself to get them all at the start.

  82. GravatarBy alex on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

i have the s.j dilemma as well.. its pissing me off cos he is pricey. so v tempting to offload him, however come finals time, if you stuck with him, he might be the smokey that pops up and gets 130 and is all the difference. im gunna keep him cos the $ i lose off him ill make up from my rookies such as palmer, bird, gamble, rioli etc .. thats my thoughts anyway

I can’t be bothered reading the comments 10 onwards but I’ll leave you with this.

If you trade out Steve Johnson now you have no right to be calling yourself a good Dream Teamer or SuperCoacher.

  84. GravatarBy The Saint on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

I disagree S “Thinks He’s Daicos” J. It all depends on ur situation. If u did read onwards you wouldve seen we’ve discussed that. Generally u dont trade stars, but there are always a few exceptions. And people are allowed 2 think about it and discuss it.

  85. GravatarBy Besty on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

SJ - perhaps you can enlighten us with reasons on your opinion on Johnson as many people who are considering trading him have been very successful in these comps in the past.

OK, he had good performance from Rds 8 to 22 last year - but before 2007 he was not a star performer yet he is priced at the very elite level amongst very proven performers such Brown, Pav & Riewoldt.

I just see Hawkins, Gamble, Stokes etc playing much bigger roles for Geelong - N Ablett wasn’t that good last year so Geelong were more reliant on Johnson. Plus his career was seriously in the balance after all the indiscretions.

I don’t have much cash left and have made no other trades. This gets me the best performing rookie (Hill) and a stack of cash for future upgrades on all my other gun rookies. Seems like a good move.

  86. GravatarBy BrayDog on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

I’m sticking with Stevie, the way the average works his next 3 game only have to be like 100+ and he back up to more than where to started, plus he has Melbourne this week.

Judd is another story though? He he worth holding on to?

  87. GravatarBy chicko on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

    What about these trades:
    P.Burgoyne out for Osbourne
    Lade out for Cox

I dont have Cox at the moment and I think that is stopping me from being a good team, 1750pts per week, to a great team 1900pts per week. this is probably the best way I can think of doing the deal to get cox as I have none in the bank.

  88. GravatarBy BrayDog on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

    Don’t jump on Osbourne.

  89. GravatarBy The Saint on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

mmm not sure i like the look of that chicko. there has to be another way. dont fall for the trap of early season form. yes some might keep it up, but proven performers and rookies are the way to go if possible.

  90. GravatarBy Ed on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

I just did a bit of research on preseason form, Steve Johnson was good in his practice games, Peter Burgoyne was shocking.

I’m now thinking I’ll trade Peter Burgoyne and maybe also a forward to pick up Hill (WB). Or should I just forget getting Hill and upgrade say N Brown (RIC) to Pav, or not even make a trade in the forward line at all?

boys my question is this…. what do you think of trading brett delidio for josh hill? is it worth it in the long run? would love your opinion… cheers

  92. GravatarBy BrayDog on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

Those who want Josh Hill are you just going for the value he is offering, or his skill?

  93. GravatarBy BrayDog on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

And, I got a question for everyone out there wanting to trade out the likes of Stanton, Judd, Johnson, Brown, and other dear players that haven’t quite preformed. Did you buy them to make value on, or to get good scores? If you answer the 2nd option why are you wanting to trade them when they lose value? I know why your thinking “Oh, I miss out on get 100k for Hill” but really he isn’t going to score that well and surely you have one of Gamble, Rioli and Tippet who is going to make you money soon anyway.

My advice if you paid over $450,000 for them you brought them for the season, not 2 games. Stick with them!

  94. GravatarBy BrayDog on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

When I said $450,000 I was thinking SuperCoach. Sorry. Maybe move that down to $350,000 for DreamTeam. Ha.

Read my post, Micheal. You didn’t buy Deliedo for value, but performances. So, who cares if he has two bad weeks. Stick with him, and surely you have Gamble or Rioli to make money on, but if not trade Brett.

  100. GravatarBy The Saint on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

Michael…depends on ur situation. Do u need money to either A) get cox, or B) strengthen a backline thats playing 1 short? if u r, then its a possibility. If its just to get hill’s value as an extra bonus, the 9th forward, then i wouldnt bother. As ive said earlier, i try to avoid trading stars when posible, unless they are injured or in really terrible form that wont be corrected quick smart.

  101. GravatarBy Chunky on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

I really like the look of Goodwin. He looks like he is set for a big year. Do people think he can hold a 100 per game average throughout the year though ? Or can I expect his form to be choppy ?

  102. GravatarBy alex on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

on the steve johnson discussion. His last 11 games last year he averaged 105, just thought id throw that in there.

also, hill should be a cash cow only not a season long player, so trade accordingly

  103. GravatarBy yc on Mar 31, 2008 | Reply

Guys it’s not worth it getting Goodwin. If he holds a 90 average for the rest of the year he’ll peak at about 435,000 and then settle to around 390,000. His 161 will give him a price rise of around 50-55k but it will be short lived. So no use trading out one gun for another gun.

I am thinking Bradshaw to Hill…this would be my new forward line:

    Pavlich
    Johnson (Brad)
    Hall
    Deledio
    Hill
    Porplyzia

    Tippett
    Rioli

    People’s thoughts?

Cloke for J. Hill to get the extra cash to upgrade Koshietski for Cox? This will be my first 2 trades of the season .. is it worth doing considering how poor my ruck division are?

  106. GravatarBy Muscat FC on Apr 1, 2008 | Reply

i need advice on this trade, put in a bit of research this year and am not happy with performance thus far. Haven’t used any trades yet.

    Back:
    Burgoyne
    B. Jones
    Gram
    Mattner
    Symes
    Bradshaw
    Proud

    Scott DT
    Selwood

    Mid:
    Cross
    Ablett
    Kerr
    Judd
    Stevens
    Houli

    Palmer
    Bird

    Ruck:
    Simmonds
    King

    Kruezer
    Meesen

    Fwd:
    Pavlich
    B. Johnson
    J. Brown
    Deledio
    Burton
    Porps
    N. Thompson

    Gamble
    Tippet

So i wanna trade Judd to Jack which leaves me with bout 300k

    Do i then

    a) Trade out Thompson/Tippet for Hill with 200-300k in bank.

    b) Trade out King for Cox with 100k in bank.

    c) Just do Judd trade…or no trades

I know everyone says Cox is essential, but the duo of King/Simmonds is doing ok and king’s price will go up.

On other hand Tippet and Gamble are reasonable bench players although it seems a waste not to include Hill and have one of the 3 rooks playing with Thompson traded out for Hill.

However my judgement is clouded with all this Cox hype. Is he really worth having, ot would the inclusion of another fwd rookie better my overall cash and team later on?

Im leaning towards Cox as that is one less gun i have to trade up to later and 100k still to maybe get a cornes in the coming weeks???

    Advice is much appreciated guys…thanks.

who should i get; Osborne or thornton? Who is a more stable dt player?

  108. GravatarBy BrayDog on Apr 1, 2008 | Reply

@ Smoove. Definitely do that, it hurts to use two trades so early but I reckon that is a prefect trade.

@ Muscat. That is a very tough situation. But, I’m sticking my Judd he has only just came back from injury, he will come good.

@ Vish. Neither in the past, but both have been alright early this season - I’m not jumping on them.

  109. GravatarBy Ed on Apr 1, 2008 | Reply

Thorton would be the better choice IMO. Have a look at Osborne’s stats on FanFooty and he averages around 55pts compared to Thorton’s 60 odd. Both not great players but Thorton is a definite starter and this year seems to be getting used as a loose man when Carlton have the ball. He also has the ability to score big more often, Osborne is more consistently average and could be pushed out of the team.

Can anyone give me some advice on Brent Guerra? I have him in my backline and he didn’t have the best game yet still score 81. I feel that Ladson takes some touches off him. At $330k odd, I could downgrade him to a Thornton type and make some cash, but I’m worried its a waste of a trade. I have Hansen, S Selwood and Meyers in my backs and can’t afford a 0 from one of them, so could use the $ to upgrade or get in a playing rookie like Harry Taylor. Thoughts?

  111. GravatarBy The Saint on Apr 1, 2008 | Reply

Hammer…You should read what i wrote carefully. The players u pick at the start of the season that are your “star” dream team players, should not be traded just for a little cash. They should be 22 round players, in your team all year, barring horrible form or injury. Now the choice is yours, and no doubt ive broken my own rules before, but this is my advice.

what you think of this. i trade tippett out this round (only assuming hes gonna miss 2+) or even jimmy sellar? for josh hill, get the price rise, then after round 3’s lockout, all prices changed then get j brown unless he has another shocker? i get say $60,000 from hill, and a cheap jb, but he worth using 2 trades for?

Hi guys, thanks for the helpful comments, esp Shane and Saint. I’m feeling ok about my team, but just need some reassurance.

Backs: H Shaw, Newman, S Fisher, Hunt, Birchall, Drummond, Roberts-Thompson, (S Selwood, Spangher)

Mid: N Jones, Schammer, Hodge, Adcock, Palmer, Coughlan, (Taylor, Masten)

    Rucks: King, Gardiner, (Leuenberger, Kreuzer)

Fwds: Headland, R Murphy, Franklin, JB, D Thomas, Deledio, McGregor, (Tippett, Henderson)

I have $7,300 in the bank. No trades yet. Although Henderson has scored, I want to swap him for Hill but in order to do that I need to free up a bit more cash, so I’ll swap Drummond for Thornton. Is there any better trade i should be making?

I was also wondering if it would be a complete waste to trade Lonergan for Palmer next week if Palmer had another boomer?

  127. GravatarBy Shane on Apr 2, 2008 | Reply

Oaks - Drummond to Thornton and Henderson to Hill looks wise.

    Dazzler - Wasted trade.

Dooky - You dont need to trade which is a good position to be in, however, Cox will be a must if you want to figure in September action. Also, Hill does look like he will make some serious $$. I would advise making the trade becuase you would be scoring another 20-30ppg and maybe gaining up to $150K from Hill.

Scott - Tough one but I dont think you are guaranteed to make $100K from the trade. I wouldnt trade. While you may make $90K trading down Thompson will average 10 to 20 ppg more and have a ceiling point of say $50K more. Thus a profit of only about $50K. Too risky for me. Hold on to the trade.

Bort - If you can play with a full compliment of forwards and play Dew on the bench then do so. He will rise in value when he starts playing again. You would be lucky to make $100K out of that one.

Lonergan to Palmer? Wait till next week before asking that one.

  128. GravatarBy bort on Apr 2, 2008 | Reply

Cheers for that Shane, I was leaning towards leaving my team as is, and will probably leave as is next week as well if I can get away with it.

I guess its taken a while to sink in - no trades unless really necessary! (or to upgrade when my rookies do increase in $ ….)

I have a pretty good squad - averaging 1,900, but my major weakness is my 2nd ruck (L’berger) and only have non playing rookies on the bench. Have no cash so am thinking of these two trades -

Dew to C Stokes - pick up 90k
    L’Berger to Simmonds

Stokes won’t start on the ground as I would put Rioli & Gamble in front of him.

Thoughts? Think this could give me another 40-50pts a game in the ruck and not lose anything up forward but gain a rookie cash cow.
